“Peter Pan Live!” Dec 28, 2014

QHE,

Thanks for the clips. Here's a link to the entire 1960 version of the TV broadcast. I already left the U.S. by then. But the entire production was basically the same as the 1954 original Broadway production and the 1955, 1956 TV broadcasts ...

Steve,

Thank you so much for the link, I've truly enjoyed watching this version of Peter Pan musical.

BTW, the recent NBC production "Peter Pan Live!" was a big disappointment. IMO, the roles of Peter Pan and Captain Hook were both haplessly miscast.

You're not alone; here are some interesting reviews:

'Peter Pan Live!' Review: NBC's take on classic tale oddly ponderous
http://www.cleveland.com/tv/index.ssf/2014/12/peter_pan_live_review_nbcs_tak.html

NBC's live telling of J.M. Barrie's classic tale Thursday was an oddly ponderous, disconnected, disjointed and jerky mess. If it had been a Broadway show, it would have gotten the hook (pun intended)

It suffered a draggy start, cursed by a "Downton Abbey" drawing room dialogue and a call for everyone to go to bed. It grew better in the colorful Neverland but veered into parody with a Captain Hook by Christopher Walken that seemed like a failed "Saturday Night Live" sketch about Johnny Depp.

Melissa Joan Hart's endless shilling for Wal-Mart during the commercial breaks made more of an impact.

One big change this year was the flying. It was supposed to be like Cirque du Soleil, but it came out more "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark." Peter's flying was jerky at the beginning and not well synched with the cameras, and the group flying scenes were shaky at best. It felt like personal injury attorneys should have been waiting by the phone.

The 7 worst things about NBC’s “Peter Pan Live!”
http://www.salon.com/2014/12/06/the_7_worst_things_about_nbcs_peter_pan_live_partner/

1) Cast someone who can actually pull off the role of Peter Pan.
Mary Martin’s performance in the 1960 televised production are some big tights to fill, and while Williams has a nice mezzo-soprano voice, it’s far too reedy and thin to match up to Martin’s trademark belt.

2) Replace your costume designer.
If you started watching Peter Pan during the Native American musical numbers (more on that later), and you had the sound off, you probably would’ve thought you were watching a Navajo-themed Ariana Grande music video.

3) Don’t make everyone try a British accent.
Most everyone in the cast at least attempted a British accent last night, and while no one came close to pulling a Van Dyke, it’s fair to say that some of the linguistic efforts were noticeably better than others.

4) Replace or cut out the “Ugg-A-Wugg/True Blood Brothers” number.
When NBC announced it would be staging Peter Pan earlier this year, the first thing everyone wondered, apart from wondering whether or not Brian Williams would make an impromptu cameo as Smee, is what the network would do with the controversial “Ugg-A-Wugg” number, featuring Tiger Lily and her band of “Indians.”…

As with Waze and Google Maps, it looks like Google's own Translate app will soon see the benefit of that acquisition. As I mentioned before, one of the main activities I do online is read the news on the CNN website. However, their US edition homepage is so full of info you cannot zoom in due to the limitation of a 9.7" screen. Without being able to zoom in, the news headlines are so tiny and crammed together that it's hard to pinpoint and tap on the desired news item.

Steve,

Have you tried reading the news through the CNN mobile platform, or using their MOBILE APPS?

http://www.cnn.com/interactive/mobile/

QHE,

Thanks so much. That seems to be just the ticket.
i'll have to wait till this bout of flu of mine is over to tinker with it.

QHE,

As luck would have it, CNN redesigned their homepage for their US news edition, the page that I frequent. It all started on Jan. the 1st or the 2nd. Now the page is better organized, has a lot less info, and is a lot less cluttered; the best thing for me is that I can easily zoom in when using the iPad.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.

Steve,

Yes, I noticed that CNN redesigned both their desktop and mobile sites; the web page has cleaner appearance now. CNN hears you.

formed of a single diamond or

Stop Trying To Fix Everything

It happens every year. January 1st hits, and you’ve got grand ambitions to be the healthiest, smartest, most organised individual anyone ever set eyes on. And whilst it’s all well and good to have goals; make them ridiculously unrealistic and it’ll just end in disappointment.

If you’ve already broken all your New Year’s resolutions, don’t feel too disheartened – it happens! Joseph Shrand of the Harvard Medical School explains that it’s all cognitive. According to Shrand, pleasure is the most primitive part of the brain and harder to ignore, compared to the more ‘recently evolved’ self-restraint desire.

As a result, it’s easy for us to slip into our old bad habits, eating chocolate and crisps aplenty. January is a struggle as it is, without giving up all your favourite treats too. Instead, take it easy this month. You’ve the rest of the year to improve yourself; approach it one step at a time.

Yueyin,

Sorry, what I meant to say is I was wrong about that. Brooke Shields is really quite down-to-earth, and has a great sense of humor. For example, not every accomplished actor/actress would take on the role of a trashy neighbor like the one she depicted in this episode of "The Middle".

I agree with you that her selfie did go a little overboard though.

Steve,

我对她不了解,只是随便说说而已。不懂她为什么要自毁形象。或许太无聊,没事干了。或许也是一种炒作。
