George Boole Aug 6, 2015

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boolean_algebra

In mathematics and mathematical logic, Boolean algebra is the branch of algebra in which the values of the variables are the truth values true and false, usually denoted 1 and 0 respectively. Instead of elementary algebra where the values of the variables are numbers, and the main operations are addition and multiplication, the main operations of Boolean algebra are the conjunction and, denoted ∧, the disjunction or, denoted ∨, and the negation not, denoted ¬. It is thus a formalism for describing logical relations in the same way that ordinary algebra describes numeric relations.

Boolean algebra was introduced by George Boole in his first book The Mathematical Analysis of Logic (1847), and set forth more fully in his An Investigation of the Laws of Thought (1854).[1] According to Huntington the term "Boolean algebra" was first suggested by Sheffer in 1913.[2]

Boolean algebra has been fundamental in the development of digital electronics, and is provided for in all modern programming languages. It is also used in set theory and statistics.

Yueyin,

(As I search for the name "Carma Hinton", the images that pop up don't remind me at all of that female student from class #6, plus in my opinion she doesn't obviously stick out as a Caucasian)。 I vaguely remember this other girl's name to be Maria. One thing for sure is she spoke perfect Chinese just as it's described of Carma.

BTW, you are so good and proficient at Googling. How on earth did you ever find this interview article?!

Steve,

I got the article just by accident. From the Wiki page you provided about Carma Hinton, I also went to its Chinese version. The article 《专访“文革”反思片洋导演卡玛》 is just the first article in the 参考文献 section.

Wild guess Aug 7, 2015

http://www.bates.edu/news/2004/03/17/chinese-documentary/

Yueyin,

It could be that this is one of the photos that Carma kept from her 101中 days(although it doesn't look like a class photo 'cause some of the kids look too young to be in senior high). I'm guessing she's the third person across from the top left. As you can see, she doesn't stick out from the crowd that much.

This other girl from 六班 was way more Caucasian-looking; plus she always had a Peter-Pan haircut.

Steve,

Indeed, Yueyin.

I was going to say, most of them look like they're from rural provinces. In those days folks from Beijing were very recognizable.

Yueyin,

Wow, that must be her then.

I thought she was in 六班; plus she looked a lot different in my mind's eye - attribute it to my faulty memory.

This must have been the source of my impression of her "Peter-Pan hairstyle".

5. Assouline Venezia(意大利,威尼斯)
6. Livraria Lello(葡萄牙,波圖)

7. Boekhandel Domincanen(荷蘭,馬斯垂克)
8. Powell's City of Books(美國,波特蘭)
9. Books for Cooks(澳洲,墨爾本)
10. Strand(美國,紐約)
11. 1200 Bookshop(中國大陸,廣州)
12. Foyles flagship(英國,倫敦)

13. John K. King Used & Rare Books(美國,底特律)
15. Parnassus Books(美國,納什維爾)
16. Cafebreria El Pendulo(墨西哥,墨西哥市)
17. The Last Bookstore(美國,洛杉磯)
