Rates are the main reason I have started transitioning from translation into teaching. I haven't been able to increase my rates to keep up with inflation the past 6 to 7 years, and it is no longer possible to live in a high cost country and rely solely on translation as income if you want to have a decent pension at a certain point.
I'll add: Work has been steady, but having to work longer hours to compensate for inflation is no longer a prospect I can live with long term.

Who doesn't want to have regular clients with sufficient amounts of jobs? I hope there will still be a better future for us translators and interpreters.

Before I get dismissive comments, listen or read for a moment: where were you before globalization, before every country had broadband internet? How did you earn your keep, make ends meet, strive towards a better future for yourself and your loved ones?

A definitely interesting shift, from my point of view! I was a teacher for 30 years but could hardly make a decent living from teaching in my low-income, fairly poor country. Towards the end it was becoming quite stressful as well.
After I moved to the Netherlands, I was already old enough not to be needed by schools, then came the idea of investing into what I used to do for a while one or two decades earlier: translation. I could survive serious health problems relatively easily at home and earn a decent living at my own pace, sipping tea as I wish. My stress levels subsided until I got to pensionable age. I still have some work but only if the fees are good. No stress at all now.
