Is there a way to edit a XLF file online? I used Trados to translate a file, and now the client cannot open it correctly due to a placeholder issue, but as I am away from my office, I do not have access to Trados. Any suggestions?

If you use Trados without your client asking you to do so, chances are that your client cannot work with this file type and/or convert the file(s).
The only thing you can do is re-open the file in Trados and export the target translation as a different format (preferably the same format your client sent you originally).
Sometimes Trados files can be opened with other CAT tools, but by the looks of it, this does not work for your client.
Good luck!
