a – articol nehotărât + short – adjectiv (scurt) + while – conjuncţie, ce introduce propoziţiile subordonate temporale (când, pe când, în timp ce). "

Analiza ta nu e tocmai corectă. "While" are, în îmbinarea asta, statut de substantiv, sensul de baza al cuvântului fiind acela de "perioadă".
