OmegaT 1.8.1 Released as Stable Version; 2.0 as Beta

OmegaT 1.8.1 Released as Stable Version; 2.0 as Beta

Nov. 16, 2008--OmegaT is a free and open source multi-platform Computer Aided Translation Tool, which uses the standard TMX file format to store and access translation memories. This guarantees that you can exchange translation material with other CAT applications supporting this format.

The OmegaT Project has released OmegaT 1.8.1. Its main new features are:

·  a spellchecker that uses OpenOffice.org's dictionaries, allowing it to spellcheck in         more than 80 languages;
·  a completely updated manual;
·  more visual information (display source for all segments/mark translated/mark   untranslated);
·  better navigation (translation history to navigate the segments already visited, navigation     to matches and back, etc.);
· target letter case change (lower case/upper case/caps upper case);
· source and target length indication;
· improved HTML handling with regular expressions based specification of non-
   translatable contents.

OmegaT is available in 28 languages, including a new Portuguese (Portugal) localization, and the user interface has already been updated in Albanian, Belarusian, Catalan, Czech, Dutch, French, Serbo-Croatian, and Slovak.

The OmegaT Project provides you with a Windows package, a Linux package and a Mac OSX package directly downloadable from:

The OmegaT 1.8 series will be the last to work with Java 1.4.

The next version (2.0), which has been released in a beta version, is a major rewrite of OmegaT's core. It is based on Java 1.5 and comes with major features including:

·  on-demand matches: matches from reference TMX are not computed when the            project is    opened, but when the translator needs them, i.e.. when a new segment is opened. That    considerably reduces project opening time when a lot of TMX data is used (like hundreds    of MB on some systems), and the matching time is still negligible.
·  better data indexing for matches, based on Lucene;
·  user-configurable shortcuts;
·  QuarkExpress CopyFlow Gold support;
·  SRT (subtitles) support.

The OmegaT Project always welcomes developers, localizers, and users to contribute their experience, knowledge and insights to the software we release.
