Well, Alan, you can open a new text or Word file using Spotlight. Just hit ⌘-spacebar, and start typing the app you want to open. After entering one or two letters, your app will appear, and you select and hit Return. But using a Service is better. If you select a text and want to paste it into a new Word file, just right-click, and your context menu will appear:



A new blank Word file will open, and without having to copy or paste, the selected text will appear in the Word file. Even better, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to it: Select the text, hit the KBS, and there you are.

And not having drive letters. I really don't know why Apple hasn't found a way to implement that!

You can implement it yourself. You can change the drive name into anything you like, including a letter. I have a drive called BU (for back-up), and one CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner. Recommended!). Names are far more clear than letters, but if you insist on drive letters…
