Poetry to translate: rights to translators

Since I\'m not getting any younger, all my poetry is in the public domain and may translated by anyone into any language, with the rights to the individual translations inhering in the translators. I believe that ideas belong to the universe at large, so this is my contribution to the translation community, to which generations of my family have belonged.

Brezhnev's Obituary Apr 25, 2002

I wrote the following poem the day after Brezhnev died, while I was having to listen to all manner of lies from Moscow Radio about what a splendid man he was (I was working for BBC Monitoring at the time.) If anyone wants to translate it into Russian (or any other language), they\'re welcome.



UNOFFICIAL OBITUARY

(to the tune of “Poor Jud is Dead”, from the musical “Oklahoma!”)



Brezhnev is dead;

Brezhnev is dead;

But it really should be said,

He was not the greatest statesman of our time.

He was cruel and he was mean,

And it’s plainly to be seen,

His career was just a catalogue of crime.



Brezhnev is dead;

Let no tears for him be shed

By the Poles, for whom his doctrine still prevails.

When they put it to the test,

Solidarnosc was suppressed,

And its leaders fill the overflowing gaols.



Brezhnev is dead;

But no hearts for him have bled

In the mountains of far-off Afghanistan,

Where with little help or thanks,

They still fight the Russian tanks

That were sent there by this great peace-loving man.



Brezhnev is dead;

But though Husak bows his head,

The Czechs remember 1968,

When the Spring was fair and free,

But they later paid the fee,

And a Russian occupation was their fate.



Brezhnev is dead;

And his coffin’s draped in red –

But a word of warning ought to end this verse.

Let not joy be unconfined.

We shall very likely find

His successor will be someone even worse.
