Having just discovered that my CAT tool's keyword-in-context search doesn't actually work, I'm looking for a simple utility to replace it. I need to be able to launch it from MS Word. In other words, I'd select a term in a document and press a shortcut, which then runs a search. A utility that can only run a search on the clipboard is also okay. My reference file is a plaintext file with one segment per line.

Having just discovered that my CAT tool's keyword-in-context search doesn't actually work, I'm looking for a simple utility to replace it. I need to be able to launch it from MS Word. In other words, I'd select a term in a document and press a shortcut, which then runs a search. A utility that can only run a search on the clipboard is also okay. My reference file is a plaintext file with one segment per line.
(My CAT tool is an older version of WFC, and this type of search is called a "reference search" in WFC. Some tools refer to KWIC searches as "concordance search". Confusingly, WFC uses the term "concordance search" for a TM search, but I now need a search through monolingual files.)

A rather simple task for Omni-Lookup:
Define a data source of type "Appl", click "Properties", choose Notepad as the application (the green blinking wizard button will help you), put your reference file's path into the "Starting parameters" box (the reddish wizard button will help you) and put {c}f{#}{enter} into the "Query key sequence" box. Click OK in order to save these settings for future use.
This starts Notepad (if it's not running already), gets Notepad to open the reference file, sends Ctrl-F to Notepad, puts the query term into Notepad's search box and finally sends "Enter" to Notepad.
In Omni-Lookup's main window choose a hotkey at will. This hotkey - when being hit within any application (e. g. Word) - grabs the term in that application and gets Notepad to perform the above actions.
BTW, as you can even define groups consisting of several data sources of different types, you can simultaneously resp parallel lookup in different references (Internet, Excel, Tbx/Tmx, ...) via one single hotkey hit.
