Thanks to all so far for your input. This deals with the Yucatan, Belize, Guatamala, Honduras region. Here is some more text:
Considerando la interrelación ecológica, social, económica y los impactos antropogénicos sobre sus recursos naturales, la región se define geográficamente bajo un concepto de cuenca: nicia de oeste a este en los parte aguas de la cuenca del Caribe, abarca las áreas terrestres y costeras, extendiéndose hasta los arrecifes y el Mar Caribe de estos cuatro países.

from the context I could suggest "it stretches" (if straight) or "it arches" (if curved). Could you quote some more please, and what is the region?
