Saludos Cindy. Verifica si esto coincide con tu contexto:

Las miras invar ("invar staff" con 2340 resultados en google o "invar rod" con 8760) son usadas para nivelación ("precision levelling" o "levelling") únicamente de manera vertical. Si se usan de manera horizontal no se puede determinar un desnivel en el plano vertical.

Las miras pueden ser usadas de manera horizontal con teodolitos o vertical con niveles para determinar distancias por taquimetría. De otra manera no veo que sentido tiene colocar una mira "horizontal" por lo que creo que el texto original se refiere a este tipo de mediciones.
