Source text - French Mais nous voulions rester légers, éviter la posture du drame. Alors nous avions imaginé un jeu. Sans doute pensions-nous que si nous nous comportions comme des enfants, nous nous en tiendrions, pour les blessures, aux genoux couronnés et aux bosses sur le front. Et puis nous nous aimions encore, je crois, et cela nous rassurait. Nous gardions les yeux ouverts sur nos impatiences, nos désillusions, nos tiédeurs. Il n’y avait pas d’urgence, ce n’était pas un cataclysme qui menaçait, même pas un orage, mais plutôt un brouillard, un crachin. Nous en étions au crépuscule de nous-mêmes, mais de tels soirs peuvent s’éterniser. Pour dire la vérité, nous n’avions pas irrévocablement décidé de rompre. Il revenait à Sandrine seule de refermer la porte que nous avions ouverte entre nous vingt-cinq ans plus tôt. Elle seule pouvait partir ou ne pas partir. Je me plierais à son verdict. Je m’en remettais entièrement à elle, par amour ou par courtoisie. Par respect, sans doute. Par lâcheté aussi, un peu, qui sait?
Translation - English But we wanted to keep it light, avoid a fuss. So we made up a game, no doubt thinking that if we behaved like children, we would hurt ourselves no more than a scrape on the knee or a bump on the forehead, so to speak. And then, we still loved each other, I think, and that reassured us. We were careful not to show our impatience, disillusion, half-heartedness. There was no rush. After all, it wasn't a cataclysm that threatened us. It wasn't even a storm. More like a mist or a drizzle. We were at the twilight of our life together, but such evenings can go on forever. Truthfully, we had not decided once and for all to separate. It was up to Sandrine alone to close the door that we had opened between us twenty-five years earlier. She alone could leave... or not. I would respect her decision. I would leave it entirely up to her. Out of love, or courtesy. Out of respect, no doubt. Out of cowardice, too. To some degree. Who knows?
