The Integrity of the Plastic Process
We have seen that men insist upon producing art as a fulfillment of the biological necessity for self-expression. Art is one of the avenues which has afforded satisfactory means, which we may here call a language, for the successful fulfillment of this drive. Art, then, is a definite kind of thing, a species of nature, and like any species in the physical world it proceeds according to definite laws of its own. It has definite properties which will here be described as the plastic elements. By the constant rearrangement of these properties, art, like every other species, proceeds according to logic through stages of change that we can call growth. It grows logically, definitely, step by step from the exhibition of one set of characteristics to another, always related to its past equipment, and bearing at the same time the promise of the future.
A study of the history of art, then, is really the demonstration of the continuity of this plastic process—a demonstration of the inevitable logic of each step as art progresses on its way from point to point. The practice of art in the large, that is, the aggregate production of all artists, is identical to the evolution of these laws. And the work of each artist is a different facet of each stage and functions as an accretion that serves as a corollary to the preceding stage. It is in the terms of these plastic laws alone that art preserves a continuous, logical, and explicable picture. We thus see the artist performing a dual function: first, furthering the integrity of the process of self-expression in the language of art; and secondly, protecting the organic continuity of art in relation to its own laws. For like any organic substance, art must always be in a state of flux, the tempo being slow or fast. But it must move.
This point needs special emphasis today. Recent practice has tended to obscure this truth whose inevitability should be obvious upon any acquaintance with art. Our age seems to be in search for the greatest number of correlations it can find. Developments in psychology and in the social sciences have given rise to a body of information which has been quickly adopted to show its action in every activity. There has been a mad scramble to relate everything to everything else.
We have a ponderous mass of works relating art to all things and, for that matter, relating all things to one another. The economists have been showing that art is the result of economic conditions, the physical scientists that art is the result of climatic, geographic, atmospheric, and topographical conditions. Our books of art are therefore filled with the discussions of landscape or finance as the bases from which art can be understood. The ethnologists insist upon examining the expressions of racial traits in the artist, the genealogists consider a minute study of the artist’s genealogical tree as essential to the understanding of his art. One very popular American critic has prefaced his studies of art in France and America with a minute description of the institution of prostitution in both countries, putting forth his comparative analysis of that institution as the basis for his judgments and preferences.
There is no doubt that the artist, being human, is both changed and influenced by his environment. The environmental factors that impress themselves upon him and his actions are infinite, and as time goes on and our investigations extend to more and more fields, we shall find many influences that we cannot trace as yet today. No doubt in their aggregate they will contribute much to our understanding of the artist, his motivations, and how they can be detected in his art. Art histories will discuss these influences in chapters dealing with the particular expressions of the artist within the plastic continuity of art. They will explain, for example, why Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Titian, whose plastic heritage is the same and whose environments were similar enough, produced works which are so different in their appearance and in the elements which they emphasize. They will do much to explain the subjective objectives of the picture and why the different artists said different things. They will explain the variable factors in this constant activity of the plastic process. For we may wish to know why John and Joe, two men contemporaneous with one another, possessing similar organs, and acted upon by similar environments, still look and act differently from each other. We will find factors that will explain the variations which the constant assumes under different conditions.
Unfortunately today, we have not as yet identified a sufficient number of these factors, nor have we worked out a system of causations that would contribute either a true or complete picture. Yet since the way has been pointed, it would be inhuman not to submit to the temptation of making assumptions from the possibilities that our current knowledge has presented. To understand John or Joe at all, however, we must first understand that they are men, and that at all times the environment influences them by means of the organs essential to their species, and by the particularities of these organs at a particular time and place; that these organs will receive only certain things and reject others, and that they will function only on their own terms and within their own potentialities if they are to function at all.
Therefore, the fact that a man was rich or poor, that he lived in a flat or hilly country, that he was shy or forward with women, or that his parents had inherited traits that are associated with temperate or torrid climates or with what are considered the attributes of the Anglo-Saxon or Latin race—these circumstances may explain why the artist’s part in the plastic continuity showed this or that peculiarity. Yet in spite of any peculiarity, he nevertheless functions definitely and inexorably within the plastic process—nothing else is possible here. And to make any intelligent study of art as art means the allotment to the artist of his place in that process. This is the constant, the only constant which will provide intelligibility to his function as an artist. The other factors are of infinite variety, unpredictable, and largely still unanalyzable. They provide us with that endless variety of appearances, with those different aspects of a similar thing which dispel monotony and which make this examination of the plastic process one of esthetic appeal and endless interest. It is in much the same way that we would hardly enjoy new and different friends if they were all the exact duplicate of the same pattern. In other words, the environment provides us with the clue for the examination of differences. The laws of painting in themselves provide us with the inevitable constant, with the point of reference, with the measure that makes differences relate to each other and intelligible.
While we therefore welcome these correlations if our enjoyment of certain works of art makes us want to know something about the character of the author and the habitat in which he lived, we must voice, at the same time, the following misgiving: these correlators are often characterized by an excessive zeal for the establishment of immediate and direct causation, no matter what the cost. In fact, some of these researchers have reduced art to the position of a mere minion, obsequious to society’s whim, badgered from corner to corner by a series of environmental concussions, changing its hues chameleonlike in the interests of adaptability.
This is a picture which cannot be substantiated. For the history of many artists is more often a defiance of the prescriptions and proscriptions of the environment than it is a resignation to them, as already indicated in our first chapter. And like a plant there are a million factors which daily would lead to the artist’s destruction. The plant, as well as the artist, must overcome these environmental demands if they are to survive. To survive means the preservation of the identity, purpose, and function of one’s properties. In this respect, the story of art is a story of ingenious circumventions and outsmarting of those who would thwart it. To survive, art must be temporarily deflected, to appear as something it is not. But more often it will disguise its true appearance, and at the first opportunity throw off this disguise and appear as it should in its rightful domain.
This struggle for the survival of identity is really a very adventurous one, where art often is in danger of complete annihilation, and the stories of its survival are as thrilling a series of miraculous escapes as can be found in the history of any human adventures. Sometimes the guile and cleverness with which it achieves its purpose are as clever as the ruses of some Oriental merchant.
When Christianity came to the fore and became the state religion, its leaders decreed that art henceforth must be ecclesiastical and demanded a unity of art and dogma. Did the great artist discard the accumulations of centuries of beautiful growth in Greece, in Alexandria, in Antioch, and in Mesopotamia? What did he do but rearrange his inheritance? It is interesting to see how the Christian artist’s treatment of folds in garments is the continuation of the same folds found in the statues and pictures of the past which he loved. The postures of his figures are a carrying forth of the classical symmetry that is the soul of Greek art. And the attitudes of those figures are a transplantation of the peaceful and benign expressions so common in Greek tombstone monuments. So, too, the decorative arts of Assyria and the Egyptian attitudes of the Coptics all find their incorporation in the Christian artists’ new art. Christian art can no more be called new than Christian thought itself, for that simply is the consummation of the meeting of East and West in Asia Minor, where Greek Platonism is combined with the mysticism of the East and the puritanical legalism of the Oriental Jew. Christianity in art is therefore no more an invented species than Christian thought, for art, like thought, has its own life and laws, whose integrity is again as inviolable as the integrity of the laws of any other phenomenon.
Similarly, when the iconoclast emperors forbade the representation of ecclesiastical themes, artists channeled their efforts in the production of lay art, where the folds now adorned the shepherd rather than the saint, and the beasts were no longer apocryphal demons but rather paraded beneath the Oriental tree of life in sweet, idyllic poses. The monks themselves, flouting legal proscription, continued secretly to develop their types of art in their monastic retreats, producing the prototypes for an art which was to constitute the basis of the great Christian art of Italy for ten centuries to come.
Another example will make this process even clearer. The Mohammedan conquest of Persia caused a forceful suppression of its art. Yet secretly the practice of art continued, and its continuity is preserved hundreds of years later in the miniatures that we so admire today and that in their turn have contributed much inspiration to modern art.
One explanation or reservation must be made here, however. In art, as in biology, there is a phenomenon that can be described as mutation, in which appearances radically change at a tempo much more rapid than that at which they normally proceed. As in the case of biology, we have no means to determine the process by which this radical change occurs. Yet we do know that it is a reaction to a form of congestion. It is a desperate change due to the arrival at a point where the corollaries to a situation are exhausted, when the stimulus to additional growth is sluggish and a rapid rejuvenation is needed so that art, through disuse, does not atrophy in much the same way as an unused human organ. Here art must attain a new start if it is to survive. Then, assiduously, it renews its traditions by marriage with alien traditions, by the reexamination of its own processes, and by those means reestablishes contact again with its own roots. It is in this way that new plastic worlds are born. For art, like a race, cannot inbreed very long without losing its incentives to continue; it needs the rejuvenation of new experiences and new blood. These mutations, it must be clear, however, do not constitute a change in properties, or mean that art has discarded its past. On the contrary, mutation involves a more conscious evaluation of art’s inheritance and the redirection of that inheritance into channels where it can be continued with greater force.

Hemos visto que los hombres se empeñan en producir arte para satisfacer la necesidad biológica de expresarse. El arte es una de las vías que ha proporcionado el medio adecuado, lo que aquí llamaremos un lenguaje, para la realización satisfactoria de este impulso. El arte es entonces una cosa definida, una especie de la naturaleza, y como cualquier especie en el mundo físico actúa de acuerdo a sus propias leyes. Tiene propiedades definidas que aquí serán descritas como elementos plásticos. A través del constante reacomodo de estas propiedades, el arte, como cualquier otra especie, se comporta de acuerdo a la lógica pasando por fases de cambio que bien podríamos llamar crecimiento. Crece de una manera lógica, definida, paso a paso, de la exposición de un conjunto de características a otro, siempre vinculado a sus herramientas pasadas y llevando al mismo tiempo la promesa del futuro.
Por tanto, el estudio de la historia del arte es en realidad la demostración de la continuidad de este proceso plástico –una demostración de la lógica ineludible de cada una de las etapas del arte en su progresión de un punto a otro. La práctica del arte en su conjunto, es decir, la suma de la producción de todos los artistas, es idéntica a la evolución de estas leyes. La obra de cada artista constituye una faceta diferente de cada etapa, su efecto es acumulativo y funciona como corolario de la fase anterior. Y es únicamente en función de estas leyes plásticas que el arte mantiene una imagen continua, lógica y explicable. Tenemos entonces al artista desempeñando una doble función: la de afianzar la integridad del proceso de expresión personal en el lenguaje del arte y la de proteger la continuidad orgánica del arte en relación a sus propias leyes. Porque, como cualquier sustancia orgánica, el arte debe estar siempre en un flujo y su ritmo puede ser lento o rápido, pero en continuo movimiento.
Hoy día debemos insistir en este punto. La práctica reciente ha tendido a oscurecer esta verdad que tendría que resultar evidente en toda aproximación al arte. Nuestra época tiende a buscar el mayor número de correlaciones posibles. Los desarrollos en psicología y las ciencias sociales han generado un nutrido cuerpo de información cuya repercusión en otros ámbitos se intenta demostrar. Ha habido un afán desmedido por relacionar todo con todo.
Tenemos un cuantioso volumen de trabajos que relacionan el arte con todo y, en esa tesitura, todo entre sí. Los economistas se han esforzado en demostrar que el arte es el resultado de condicionantes económicos, los científicos de condicionantes climáticos, geográficos, atmosféricos y topográficos. Por tanto, nuestros libros de arte están repletos de discusiones sobre el paisaje o las finanzas como el punto de partida para entender el arte. Los etnólogos insisten en examinar las expresiones de rasgos raciales en el artista, los genealogistas consideran que un estudio minucioso del árbol genealógico del artista es esencial para entender su arte. Un crítico estadounidense muy reconocido prologa sus estudios de arte en Francia y Estados Unidos con una descripción detallada de la institución de la prostitución en ambos países y basa sus juicios y preferencias en el análisis comparativo de esa institución.
No cabe duda de que el artista, como cualquier ser humano, está expuesto a las influencias de su entorno y cambia a causa de él. Los factores ambientales que hacen huella en él, y sus efectos, son infinitos, y a medida que transcurre el tiempo y nuestras investigaciones abarcan más campos, encontraremos muchas influencias que todavía no hemos rastreado. Sin duda, cuando éstas se sumen a la información que tenemos contribuirán de manera significativa a nuestro entendimiento del artista, sus motivaciones y cómo se manifiestan en su arte. Las historias del arte explicaban estas influencias en capítulos sobre las expresiones determinadas de un artista dentro de la continuidad plástica del arte. Explicarán, por ejemplo, por qué Miguel Ángel, Boticelli y Tiziano, herederos de la misma tradición artística y que vivieron épocas similares, produjeron obras tan diferentes en su apariencia y también en relación a los elementos que predominan en cada una de ellas. Tratarán de explicar los objetivos subjetivos del cuadro y del por qué diferentes artistas expresaron cosas distintas. Intentarán describir las variables en esta constante actividad del proceso plástico. Y es que querremos saber por qué Juan y Pedro, dos contemporáneos, con órganos similares, actuando en entornos similares tienen un aspecto físico diferente y actúan de manera distinta. Descubriremos aquellos factores que expliquen las variaciones que la constante asume bajo condiciones diferentes.
Por desgracia hoy en día, no hemos llegado a identificar un número suficiente de estos factores, ni hemos elaborado un sistema de causas que contribuya a darnos un panorama real o completo. Sin embargo, puesto que se ha tomado esta vía, sería inhumano no ceder a la tentación de hacer conjeturas de las posibilidades que nuestros actuales conocimientos nos ofrecen. Ahora bien, para entender a Juan o a Pedro, debemos primero entender que son hombres y que el entorno les afecta invariablemente a través de los órganos propios de su especie y según las particularidades de estos órganos en un tiempo y lugar determinados; que estos órganos reciben sólo algunas cosas y rechazan otras, y que si funcionan, es sólo en sus propios términos y según sus propias potencialidades.
Por lo tanto, el hecho de que un hombre haya sido rico o pobre, que haya vivido en un piso o en las montañas, que haya sido tímido o atrevido con las mujeres, o que sus padres hayan heredado rasgos asociados a climas cálidos o templados o a los atributos que consideramos propios de las razas latinas o anglosajonas, podrían explicar el por qué de esta o aquella peculiaridad en el papel que el artista ha desempeñado dentro del contexto de la continuidad plástica. Sin embargo, a pesar de las peculiaridades, el artista funciona de manera definitiva e inexorable desde el interior del proceso plástico, y no existe otra alternativa. De ahí que, para hacer un estudio inteligente del arte como arte hay que asignarle al artista su lugar en ese proceso. Esta es la constante, la única constante que proporcionará una explicación inteligible de su función como artista. Los otros factores son de una variedad infinita, impredecibles y, en su mayoría, todavía imposibles de analizar. Nos proporcionan esa infinita variedad de apariencias, diferentes manifestaciones de una cosa similar que rompen con la monotonía y revisten el análisis del proceso plástico de atractivo estético e inagotable interés. Digamos que no disfrutaríamos de hacer amigos nuevos y diferentes si estuviesen cortados con el mismo patrón. En otras palabras, el entorno nos proporciona la clave para el análisis de las diferencias. Las leyes de la pintura en sí mismas nos proporcionan la constante inevitable, el punto de referencia, la medida que hace que las diferencias se interelacionen unas con otras y sean inteligibles.
Mientras nos pueden interesar estas correlaciones, motivados por ciertas obras de arte que nos proporcionan el placer de saber algo del carácter del autor y de su hábitat, al mismo tiempo debemos desconfiar de quienes las realizan pues con frecuencia demuestran un excesivo interés por establecer relaciones de causa inmediatas y directas a cualquier precio. De hecho, algunos de estos investigadores han reducido el arte a una posición subordinada, dispuesto a satisfacer los caprichos de la sociedad, vapuleado por las conmociones ambientales, camaleónico, cambiando de matices con el fin de adaptarse al medio.
Esta explicación no es sostenible pues la historia de muchos aristas es más un desafío a las prescripciones y proscripciones del entorno que una sumisión a ellas, como ya se ha dicho en el primer capítulo de este libro. Y como una planta, el artista está expuesto cada día a un millón de factores que podrían provocar su destrucción. La planta, al igual que el artista, debe superar esas exigencias ambientales si quiere sobrevivir. Sobrevivir quiere decir preservar la identidad, el propósito y las propiedades inherentes a uno mismo. En este sentido, la historia del arte es una historia de hábiles rodeos y de saber burlar a aquéllos que pretenden frustrarlo. Para sobrevivir el arte tiene que disimular por un tiempo, y aparentar ser algo diferente de lo que en realidad es. Pero lo que sucede con más frecuencia es que encubre su verdadera apariencia y a la primera oportunidad se quita el disfraz y aparece tal como es, en su legítimo dominio.
Esta lucha por la supervivencia de la identidad es realmente muy aventurada. El arte está en peligro de extinción y las historias de su supervivencia son tan emocionantes como la serie de huidas milagrosas que encontramos en la historia de cualquiera de las aventuras del ser humano. Algunas veces la astucia y la maña con la que logra sus objetivos son comparables al ingenio que despliegan las tretas de un mercader oriental.
Cuando el cristianismo apareció en escena y se volvió la religión de estado, sus líderes decretaron que el arte a partir de ese momento tenía que ser eclesiástico y exigieron que hubiese unidad entre el arte y el dogma. ¿Qué hicieron entonces los grandes artistas? ¿Desecharon la acumulación de siglos de belleza producidos por Grecia, Alejandría, Antioquía y Mesopotamia? Lo que hicieron fue readaptar su herencia. Es interesante ver cómo el tratamiento que el artista cristiano le da a los pliegues de las vestimentas es la continuación de los mismos pliegues que encontramos en las estatuas y los cuadros del pasado que amaba. Las posturas de sus figuras muestran la simetría clásica, alma del arte griego. Y las actitudes de esas figuras son un trasplante de las expresiones tranquilas y benignas tan frecuentes en las tumbas griegas. De igual manera, los artistas cristianos incorporan las artes decorativas de los asirios y las posturas egipcias de los coptos en este nuevo arte. El arte cristiano no puede ser considerado nuevo como tampoco el pensamiento cristiano en sí mismo, el cual es simplemente la consumación del encuentro entre Oriente y Occidente en Asia Menor, donde el platonismo griego se combina con el misticismo del Este y el legalismo puritano del judío oriental. Por lo tanto, el arte cristiano no es una especie inventada como tampoco lo es el pensamiento cristiano pues el arte tiene, al igual que el pensamiento, su propia vida y sus propias leyes, cuya integridad es, asimismo, tan inviolable como la integridad de las leyes de cualquier otro fenómeno.
De manera similar, cuando los emperadores iconoclastas prohibieron la representación de temas eclesiásticos, los artistas canalizaron sus esfuerzos en la producción de arte laico. Los pliegues que antes adornaban al santo pasaron a adornar al pastor y las bestias dejaron de ser demonios apócrifos para convertirse en seres que deambulaban bajo del árbol de la vida oriental adoptando poses dulces e idílicas. Los mismos monjes, burlando la proscripción legal, continuaron desarrollando su arte en secreto, en retiros monásticos, en donde producían los prototipos de un arte que iba a constituir la base del gran arte cristiano de Italia durante los diez siglos siguientes.
Tenemos otro ejemplo que ayudará a esclarecer aún más este punto. La conquista mahometana de Persia trajo consigo la abolición tajante de su arte. Sin embargo, continuaron practicando su arte secretamente y su continuidad se preservó durante cientos de años en las miniaturas que tanto admiramos hoy y que a su vez han sido una importante fuente de inspiración para el arte moderno.
Sin embargo, es necesario matizar lo anterior. En el arte, como en la biología, hay un fenómeno que puede describirse como mutación, en donde las apariencias cambian radicalmente a un ritmo mucho más acelerado que el normal. Como en el caso de la biología, no tenemos manera de definir el proceso que desencadena este cambio radical. Sabemos, por otra parte, que es una reacción a una especie de congestión. Es un cambio desesperado que ocurre cuando se ha llegado a un punto en donde se han agotado los corolarios de una situación, en donde el estímulo para seguir creciendo ha perdido fuerza y el arte necesita pasar por un repentino rejuvenecimiento para no atrofiarse por falta de uso, de la misma manera que se atrofia un órgano humano cuando no se utiliza. Llegado este punto, el arte necesita volver a empezar si quiere sobrevivir. Posteriormente se aplica en renovar sus tradiciones adquiriendo lazos con tradiciones desconocidas y reexaminando constantemente sus propios procesos, y así, a través de esos medios, restablece contacto con sus propias raíces. Es así como nacen los nuevos universos plásticos. El arte, como la raza, no puede ser endogámico por mucho tiempo sin perder el aliciente para continuar; necesita el rejuvenecimiento de nuevas experiencias y sangre nueva. Sin embargo, debe quedar claro que estas mutaciones no constituyen un cambio en las propiedades ni significan que el arte haya desechado su pasado. Todo lo contrario, la mutación supone una evaluación más consciente de la herencia del arte y la reconducción de esa herencia hacia canales donde pueda continuar con mayor fuerza.
