Source text - English There is a dark planet striking against us. Invisible,
Its venomed arrows whisk through the purple air.
It is the masked dancer, shifting among
The beneficient choir,deflecting
All dulcet influence of Aphrodite the gay,
Ingenious Mercury with his legerdemain,
And Artemis on her silver-sandalled way.
It is because the dark planet decrees,
That the rose discards to the dust her flush-fire mantle.
It is the dark planet's malice that has choked
The song of the bird in its throat, and grinds desire
Down to the bitter ashes, the gritty cinders of time,
Where, with the brazen monument, crumbles the rhyme.
Where the dark planet strikes, nothing is innocent;
My boyhood impulses it caught in a net of fear.
My friends it suborns from me. Now you, my dear,
The dark planet has hit in the thick of the night.
It has turned you away from us all, and away from the light,
And the times we in common possessed, that went by like dreams-
With the unquiet speed of the dreams-must likewise fade,
As memory fades, your image becomes a shade.
In the web of things we perceive, there is nothing the dark planet spares;
For not to our condition is granted ever
Perfection of beauty, intellect, power. They fade like those cold
Prismatic garlands, the abstract blossoms of snow,
In the beams of that black sun, whose visage we may not know.
For it is an envious star. Not one, in their hierarchies,
But must bend to its importunate, to its absolute demands.
Though we turn, in our rage, and upbraid, through our tears, its assaults,
It will yield no retrograde motion, no slackening of its bands.
The dark planet swings through its ebony kingdom above.
Listen, do you not hear the woosh-woosh of its wings?
No, it will not cease fire, till every image is emptied
Of all significance, saying only its own.
