Source text - Spanish Con motivo de la publicación reciente (2018) de una nueva historia general del cine boliviano, en el trabajo se evalúa la complejidad que asumen las formas y modalidades de abordaje crítico e investigativo sobre la producción cinematográfica del país. Para ello se recurre a dos ideas articuladoras: a) la necesidad de relatar un fenómeno cultural relativamente desconocido y no suficientemente estudiado, como es el cine boliviano; y b) el hecho de que en ese relato se entrelazan casi necesariamente la investigación y el testimonio, toda vez que los investigadores y estudiosos son a menudo también protagonistas del hacer cinematográfico. El primer gesto es ejemplificado por el mencionado libro, cuyos criterios de trabajo son sometidos a escrutinio crítico; mientras el segundo permite a la autora ampliar la reflexión hacia la producción actual (revistas impresas y digitales, documentos de festivales y encuentros, catálogos y memorias), caracterizada por nuevos intentos de articular y relacionar las realidades del cine nacional.
Translation - English On the occasion of the recent (2018) publication of a new general history of Bolivian cinema, the work evaluates the complexity of forms and modes of taking on critique and research of the cinema production of the country. Two linking ideas are employed for this purpose: a) the need to tell the story of Bolivian cinema, a cultural phenomenon that is relatively unknown and has not been sufficiently studied; and b) the fact that in telling this story, there is an almost inevitable intertwining of research and testimony, as the researchers and scholars are often also protagonists of film-making. The first approach is exemplified by the mentioned book, the work criteria of which are subjected to critical scrutiny, while the second approach allows the author to expand reflection to present-day production (printed and digital magazines, festival and encounter documents, catalogues and reports), characterized by new efforts for bringing together and interrelating the realities of the country’s cinema.

L’ouverture du magasin Chaises et Compagnie se devait d’être faite en fanfare. Spots télé, journaux, avalanche de courriels ; impossible d’échapper à l’évènement. J’avais décidé de n’y aller que plusieurs jours après cette ouverture, j’aime bien être tranquille pour faire mes éventuels achats.
La publicité avait claironné : des sièges inoubliables ! J’avais vaguement compris que pour mieux vendre leurs sièges, des personnages décoratifs y étaient assis. Dès l’entrée, je vis toute une flopée de chaises chacun avec son personnage immobile ; certainement encore un moyen d’épater le client, mais rentré chez moi il n’y aurait peut-être qu’un siège banal.
Vous pensez à un coup de pub, me dit le vendeur.

Ce sont des personnages virtuels, achetez un siège et un personnage est à vous. Vous pourrez même choisir celui qui vous convient le mieux, je vous laisse faire un tour.
Prudemment, je pris les allées, il y avait tant de chaises, de tabourets, de fauteuils… et plein de personnages y étaient assis, si différents les uns des autres! Ici un tabouret de bar avec une fille parfaite en robe rouge, là un jeune cadre dynamique avachi dans son fauteuil vintage, plus loin une vielle anglaise très droite sur sa chaise en bambou, Miss Marple, je présume ?…
Je m’avançai pour toucher le tabouret, la fille disparut avant que ma main ne l’effleure. Surpris, je reculai, le vendeur était juste derrière moi et me fit son petit discours.
C’est normal, la puce intégrée se déconnecte si vous êtes à quelques centimètres du siège. C’est décoratif, on ne veut pas satisfaire tous les fantasmes des clients. Mais chez vous, sièges et personnages «meubleront» votre intérieur. Beaucoup de gens seuls ne peuvent plus supporter leurs chaises vides, le manque d’invités, d’amis, de famille, de bruits… D’un autre côté, on veut éviter que dès maintenant ces hologrammes mangent et discutent entre eux ou avec vous. Plus tard, peut-être…Aujourd’hui ce sont juste des objets décoratifs, ils sont là et pas là, comme ça vous éviterez la monotonie.
Je vois.
Vous pouvez aussi les désactiver, de toute façon avec eux ou sans, c’est le même prix.

Je ne me lassais pas de les détailler, juchés assis en hauteur des étagères. Je me décidai pour la chaise en rotin : avec Miss Marple, je serais certainement à l’abri des fantasmes.

Jean Paul rentra, franchit la porte la chaise sous le bras. Il la plaçât à côté de la fenêtre et reculât d’un pas. La vielle dame apparut tirée à quatre épingles, impassible, hautement respectable….
Finalement, pour le même prix !
Chez lui, plus il l’observait plus elle semblait s’intéresser à lui. Il essayait de faire comme d’habitude, mais s’il sortait il la savait seule, s’il éteignait la lumière il la savait dans le noir. Chaque soir après son petit verre de rhum il ne pouvait s’empêcher de lui dire bonsoir.
De son côté, le trop gentil Jean Paul, avec sa vie fade et sans imprévus, cela tapait sur les nerfs britanniques de Miss Marple.
Elle qui avait vécu tant d’aventures, résolu bien des crimes, elle se morfondait sur sa chaise. Bien sûr, la nuit elle pouvait bouger un peu, mais la journée, toujours à subir sa présence si insignifiante !
Le voir se lever, manger, sortir marcher, manger, tripoter ses trois Bouddhas en ivoire, manger et puis ce foutu rhum avant d’aller dormir! Passées les quelques visites de curiosité des voisins, l’ennui se fit pesant. Elle savait que la situation ne pouvait durer, une idée faisait lentement son chemin dans sa tête…
Cette nuit-là elle fit ses recherches sur une partie du web vouée à satisfaire les désirs de tous les malfaisants : poisons, outils de torture services spéciaux….
Elle choisit un des produits et cocha la case : achat payable par troc (aucune trace bancaire, ni de tva). Les objets en ivoire furent acceptés de suite. Satisfaite, elle retourna s’assoir sur sa chaise.
Ce vendredi, Jean Paul devait s’absenter toute la journée, il remarqua à peine le regard un peu plus vif de sa locataire. Méticuleux, il ferma sa porte à double tour et sortit de bon matin.
Vers midi et demi, quand la plupart des yeux des retraités vont seulement de l’assiette à l’écran de télé, un livreur discret alla à la porte d’entrée prit un petit carton et en déposa un, un peu plus gros. Elle entrebâilla la porte, prot le paquet et le mit sous le lit de Jean Paul. Dans la bouteille de rhum presque vide, elle versa le contenu d’un petit sachet de poudre blanche.
Le soir, à la vue de la disparition des trois statuettes de Bouddha, il entra en transe, il fulminait, lançant des regards agressifs à Miss Marple. Il était si excité, qu’il prit une double ration de rhum. Il laissa la bouteille vide sur l’évier, avant de s’écrouler sur son dessus de lit. Elle passa immédiatement à l’action, pris le paquet et le déplia sur le lit à côté de Jean Paul, on aurait dit une sorte de housse plastique pour stocker des vêtements. Dessus, une grosse étiquette indiquait :

Elle ouvrit en grand la housse, dénuda le dormeur, plia ses jambes et réussit en le basculant, à le mettre dans la gueule du sac. Après quelques fermes poussées, le crâne chauve y entra aussi. Elle ferma hermétiquement le sac, arracha l’étiquette, déroula le petit tuyau vers l’évacuation de la douche et tira d’un coup sec sur la cordelette rouge en disant « action ». Les produits chimiques et les bactéries dévoreuses d’os se ruèrent joyeusement sur le corps sans se poser de questions.
Elle se dit que le processus pour ces 78,5 kg prendrait bien trois heures, le temps pour elle d’un thé et de mettre en scène le départ de Jean Paul.
Quand elle revint, une eau quasi limpide finissait de s’écouler sur le sol de la douche, le sac avait perdu presque tout son volume… La dernière goutte écoulée, il ne restait moins d’une dizaine de kilos de poudre dans le sac. Elle la répartie dans quelques sachets plastique.
Elle sortit discrètement de la maison et les vidas en faisant le tour du parc, souriant à l’idée qu’il puisse pleuvoir. Sa deuxième sortie fut pour jeter la housse mise en morceaux et la bouteille dans différentes poubelle qui seraient ramassées dès le petit matin.
Pour terminer, elle prit une valise, y mis des vêtements, découpa en très petits morceaux la carte d’identité de Jean Paul. Comme une ombre, elle fila vers un campement de gens du voyage en semant un à un les minuscules bouts de plastique avant de laisser la valise près de la première remorque.
La police ne vint que trois jours plus tard. L’enquête de voisinage confirma la disparition des statuettes, la valise et le linge qui manquaient. Et l’ordinateur affichait le mail d’une inconnue qui fixait au disparu un rendez-vous à la gare.
En résumé : pourquoi partir en laissant la douche couler, uniquement les empreintes de Jean-Paul dans la maison, le mail d’une inconnue… C’était surtout le mail qui posait un problème à l’inspecteur Maurice, impossible d’en connaitre l’expéditeur. Les services spécialisés n’avaient jamais vu un tel travail d’artiste pour empêcher quiconque de remonter à l’expéditeur, tout ça pour un simple rendez-vous ! Dans ce foutu salon, il voyait et revoyait cette Miss Marple, tournait en rond, se grattait la tête, bien sûr que quelque chose clochait, lui échappait.
Bien des collègues le chambraient : «disparu ou assassiné par un hologramme?», «fait la parler elle a tout vu», « amadoue-la, couche avec elle»… Chez Jean Paul, il se prit à parler à haute voix et décida de coucher là pour essayer de comprendre.
Dans le salon, quand il essayait d’effleurer Miss Marple, elle disparaissait, s’il reculait elle réapparaissait. De loin il jeta un journal qui traversa la femme sagement assise. Finalement Il s’avoua vaincu par cet hologramme.
Il décida de passer au moins trois nuits dans cette satanée maison. Il choisit la chambre d’amis, fit un tour dans le petit jardin, repéra ce qui pouvait encore se boire, et attendit, attendit…Avant d’aller s’étendre il crut surprendre la vieille dame regarder fixement la belle défense d’ivoire sculptée, bien seule, tout en haut de la bibliothèque.

The opening of the Chairs and Company store was to be explosive. TV ads, newspapers, an avalanche of e-mail; there was no escaping the event. I had decided to go several days after the opening; I like to make my occasional purchases in peace.
Advertisement had been shouted from the rooftops: What chairs! I acquired the notion that for promoting chair sales, decorative characters had been placed on them. Immediately upon entering I saw a great many chairs, each with its stationary character seated on it; certainly another way of awing clients, but at my place it would likely just be a commonplace chair.
“You’re thinking it’s a publicity stunt”, said the salesman.
“Not really.”
“It’s normal. The product is new, allow me to explain.”
“Thank you.”
“They’re virtual characters. Buy a chair and the character is yours. You may even choose the character you prefer. Feel free to look around.”
Circumspectly, I took to the aisles. There were so many chairs, stools, armchairs… and a wealth of characters seated on them, all so different from each other! Here a bar stool with a perfect young woman in a red dress, there a dynamic young professional slumped in a vintage armchair, and then an elderly Englishwoman very erect on her bamboo chair. Miss Marple I presume…?
I stepped forward to touch the stool. The young woman disappeared before my hand could stroke her. I stepped backwards in surprise. The salesman was just behind me and gave me his little speech.
“It’s normal. The integrated chip disconnects if you are within a few centimetres of the chair. They’re decorative. We don’t seek to satisfy all of the clients’ desires. But in your home, chairs and characters will ‘furnish’ your interiors. Many who live alone can no longer bear empty chairs; no guests, friends, family, a buzz… On the other hand, we want to avoid from the start that holograms eat and chat amongst each other or with you. Maybe in the future… For now they’re simply decorative objects, they’re there and not there, allowing you to beat monotony.”
“I see.”
“You can also deactivate them. In any case, the price is the same with or without them.”
“Let me choose.”
I did not tire of contemplating them, seated perched upon the selves. I decided on the rattan chair, with Miss Marple. That would definitely harbour me from fantasies.
“Excellent choice sir.”
The blasted salesman probably used the same line on all clients.
Jean-Paul crossed the doorway of his home chair in hand. He placed it near the window and took a step back. The impeccably dressed woman appeared, impassive, highly respectable…
The same price in the end!
It seemed to him that the more he observed her, the more she seemed interested in him. He tried to act as always, but if he went out he imagined her alone; if he turned out the light he knew she was in the dark. Every evening, after his spot of rum, he could not avoid bidding her goodnight.
For her part, the too kind Jean-Paul – with his bland life void of surprises – irritated Miss Marple’s British nerves.
She, who had lived so many adventures, solved so many crimes, bored out of her wits on a chair. Of course at night she was able to move about a bit, but during the day, his constant insignificant presence to be tolerated!
Seeing him getting up, eating, going out for a walk, eating, handling his three ivory Buddha statuettes, eating, and then his blasted rum before going to sleep! Following the few curiosity visits by neighbours, boredom weighed upon her. She was aware that the situation could not continue, with an idea slowly developing in her mind…
That night she did research on internet sites dedicated to satisfying the desires of all evildoers: poison, torture apparatuses, special services…
She chose one of the products, ticking the box applicable to purchase payable by barter (no bank trace or VAT). The ivory ornaments were accepted immediately. Satisfied, she sat back down.
That Friday, Jean-Paul was to be out all day. He barely noticed the more intense gaze of his tenant. Meticulously, he double-locked his door, and left very early.
Near half past noon, when the eyes of most retired persons go strictly from the plate to the television screen, a discreet delivery man approached the entrance and took a small box, leaving one a bit larger. She half-opened the door, took the package and placed it under Jean-Paul’s bed. In the near-empty bottle of rum she emptied the contents of a small sachet of white powder.
That night, noticing the disappearance of the three Buddha statuettes, he panicked and raged, giving Miss Marple aggressive glances. He was so upset that he took a double ration of rum. He left the empty bottle in the sink before tumbling under the bedspread. She got to work immediately, took the package and spread it out on the bed beside Jean-Paul; it looked like a plastic slipcover for clothes. On it was a large label:

She opened the slipcover wide, undressed the sleeper, folded his legs, and toppling him over, was able to put his body into the mouth of the bag. After a few firm shoves, the bald head entered also. She hermetically closed the bag, tore off the label, unwound a little hose up to the shower drain and gave a sharp pull on the red cord labelled ‘activate’. The chemical products and the bone-devouring bacteria excitedly scrambled on the body asking no questions.
She said to herself that the process for the seventy eight and a half kilograms would take a good three hours, time enough for her to have a cup of tea and to set the stage for Jean-Paul’s disappearance.
When she returned, the last of almost clear liquid was pouring into the shower; the sack had lost almost all its volume… After the last drop of liquid emerged there was less than ten kilograms of powder in the bag, which she distributed among several plastic sachets.
She discretely left the house and emptied the bags while walking in the park, smiling at the possibility of rain. Her second sortie had the purpose of getting rid of the plastic sack, in pieces, and the bottle, in different waste bins which would be emptied near dawn.
Finally, she took a suitcase and filled it with clothing, and cut into very small pieces Jean-Paul’s identification card. Like a shadow, she went to a traveller’s camp, leaving there, one by one, the minuscule pieces of plastic, before finally depositing the suitcase near the first trailer.
The police came only three days later. The inquiry of the vicinity confirmed the disappearance of the statuettes, the suitcase and the missing clothing. And the computer showed an e-mail message from an unidentified person setting up a rendezvous with the disappeared man at the railway station.
In short: Leave with the shower running? Only Jean-Paul’s fingerprints in the house. A stranger’s message… It was particularly the e-mail message that troubled Inspector Maurice, for discovering the sender was impossible. The specialised services had never seen such artistry for avoiding finding the sender, all for a date! In the blasted living room he saw over and over this Miss Marple, walked in circles, scratched his head; there was something definitely wrong, eluding him.
Colleagues teased him, ‘Disappeared or murdered by a hologram?’, ‘Make her talk at all cost’, ‘Wheedle her, sleep with her’. He began talking aloud at Jean-Paul’s home and decided to sleep over to seek understanding.
In the living room, when trying to skim her with his touch, Miss Marple disappeared, and reappeared when he stepped back. From a distance he threw a newspaper which passed directly through the lady stately seated. He finally declared himself defeated by the hologram.
He decided to spend at least three nights in the damned house. He chose the guest room, took a stroll in the garden, saw what there was left to drink, and waited, waited… Before lying down, he thought he surprised the old woman gazing at a beautiful sculpted tusk, completely apart, atop the library.
