English to German: Museum brochure Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Source text - English Alonzo E. Horton and his third wife, Sarah Babe Horton, traveled to San Diego in 1867 planning to succeed where Davis failed. Popularly called the Father of San Diego, Horton also came from San Francisco where he was a provisions purveyor during the Gold Rush. He had previously founded a town, Hortonville, Wisconsin, but came to California seeking new opportunities. As the Gold Rush boom died out, he decided that San Diego was ripe for development. He wanted to start a town not where Davis located it but further down the bay where the Gaslamp Quarter now sits. (...)
The tin ceilings in the hallway were saved from the dumpster and installed here in 2007 when San Diego Hardware closed after 120 years of operation in the Gaslamp Quarter. The light fixture near the front door is a rare whale oil lamp. The rear hallway fixture is from the 1880s.
English to German: Research study Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Source text - English Environmental contamination occurs via a number of disparate routes including dust generated during drilling of dressed seeds; contamination and build-up of environmental concentrations after repeated application in arable soils and soil water; run-off into surface and ground waters; uptake of pesticides by non-target plants via their roots followed by translocation to pollen, nectar, guttation fluids, etc.; dust and spray drift deposition on leaves; and wind- and animal-mediated dispersal of contaminated pollen and nectar from treated plants. (...)
Despite the lack of research and the difficulty in assigning causation, indirect effects may be as important as direct toxic effects on vertebrates and possibly more important. Neonicotinoids and fipronil are substantially more effective at killing the invertebrate prey of vertebrates than the vertebrates themselves. Indirect effects are rarely considered in risk assessment processes, and there is a paucity of data, despite the potential to exert population-level effects.

Experience
Years of experience: 10. Registered at ProZ.com: Oct 2015. Became a member: Oct 2015.
A Teacher turned Translator:
After twenty successful years as Head of German at a large independent school in London, I left my teaching job, qualified as a translator, and never looked back!
My previous career required the use of both languages on a daily basis. As a result, I never lost my native proficiency, despite being based in the UK.I maintain a large network of German-speaking contacts, both personal and professional, and travel regularly between the UK and my native country.
Qualifications:
- DipTrans IoLET with Distinction and Merit: Diploma in Translation, Chartered Institute of Linguists, UK
- Erstes Staatsexamen (MA equivalent) in Germanistik and Anglistik, Dortmund University: Literature and Linguistics, also Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, and Education Studies
Client feedback:
Museum brochure:
We have worked with many translators recently, and Anke stood out as among the best. I was highly impressed with Anke's professionalism, quick turn around, and reliability while working on this project. Anke was always clear and concise during communications, and offered valuable support when needed. Notably, and without any prompting, she was considerate of the space constraints on our brochure, being careful to consider this in her translation. I highly recommend Anke without reservation, and am confident that you will find her work as excellent as we have.
Poetry collection:
Anke proved herself to be an extremely thoughtful and intelligent translator of poetry, highly sensitive to nuance and to the subtle dilemmas which arise in such work, which she met with knowledge, imagination and flair. She is also unfailingly conscientious and reliable in all practical matters such as deadlines and proof-reading. I recommend her without hesitation.
