I hold a Master’s degree in Translation and Publicity and a Master’s degree in Medicine from Nijmegen University. I am a native Dutch speaker, living and working in The Netherlands (Rotterdam areau). My training involved the translation and writing of scientific and public information on Arts and Science.
Although new to PROZ.com, I have been a professional translator since 2000. My medical degree allowed me to quickly specialise in translating for the medical, pharmaceutical and nursing professions, as well as physical therapy, dentistry, psychiatry and psychology. As I worked as a Medical Publisher in the first years after graduation, my first projects were books for medical publishers and scholars, and I have often been the team lead/project leader for larger educational books and reference works. I was the team lead in translating the Diagnostical and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition (DSM-5) into Dutch and was the main translator of many study books and reference works for the medical profession (e.g. Anatomy & Physiology; ECG-reading and Cardiology) and for paramedics and medical technicians (PHTLS, NAEMT, BAHS). I am also experienced with scientific articles, statistics, patient information and education materials.
One of my fortes is translating highly specialized medical subjects with a keen understanding of the medical sciences and an eye for phrases and terms that may look the same in source and target language, but have different meanings or a different preferred way of expression. This specific translational skill requires a deeper medical knowledge and understanding than just knowing your terminology, and an up-to-date awareness of the target audience jargon and preferences.
I enjoy professional collaboration (with Proofreaders/ Editors and Subject Matter Experts) and creating high quality translations.
