Source text - English I feel that most European tourists don´t share my fascination with Cairo, this chaotic, rundown, dirty, noisy, anarchic and disturbingly beautiful city. My love of Cairo goes beyond Egyptian art, the pyramids, burial grounds, temples, mosques, and the miraculous river. I am not saying that the Pharaonic cultural remains are not the most seductive show on earth. However, unlike those who see in Cairo merely a place from which to set off on a delightful Nile cruise, I suggest that, before rushing off to see the rest of Egypt, you give yourself up to the heavy aromas of the market-places, to the blinding sun, to the narrow streets overflowing with noisy, happy, confident people, and to the most captivating atmosphere on the African continent. After living in this gilded atmosphere, one feels somehow thrust out of the normal dimensions of time. This feeling of timelessness is the best condition in which to make the most of the splendid tourist spectacle which the monuments of Cairo offer us. When I came to the city for the first time, I was well equipped with guidebooks, practical tips on various subjects, phone numbers, addresses, contacts, and all sorts of safety precautions. Besides strict recommendations about hygiene (avoid salads, ice cream, unpeeled fruit, drinks with ice, smoking from hookahs…) I was told about the sponging taxidrivers and shopkeepers, and how not to be lavish with tips if I didn´t want to be permanently surrounded by a swarm of beggars. I was told not to go into the poorer quarters, or if I did, not to photograph the inhabitants for fear of an angry reaction. I must admit that, soon after arriving in Cairo, I started to forget all the warnings, so that in the end I was only heeding one of them: not to swim in the polluted Nile waters, where there is a high risk of parasitic infection.
Translation - Spanish Me da la impresión de que la mayoría de los turistas europeos no comparten mi fascinación por El Cairo, esta ciudad caótica, destartalada, sucia, ruidosa, anárquica e inquietantemente hermosa. Mi amor por El Cairo va más allá del arte egipcio, las pirámides, los cementerios, los templos, las mezquitas y el río milagroso. No estoy diciendo que los restos culturales faraónicos no sean el espectáculo más seductor del mundo. Sin embargo, a diferencia de los que consideran El Cairo como un lugar desde el que meramente iniciar un placentero crucero por el Nilo, sugiero que, antes de ir a ver el resto de Egipto, se entregue a los intensos aromas de los mercados, al sol cegador, a las calles estrechas repletas de gente ruidosa, feliz y segura, y al ambiente más cautivador del continente africano. Después de vivir en esta atmósfera dorada, uno se siente empujado fuera de las dimensiones normales del tiempo. Este sentimiento de atemporalidad es la mejor condición para aprovechar al máximo el espléndido espectáculo turístico que nos ofrecen los monumentos de El Cairo. Cuando llegué a la ciudad por primera vez, estaba bien equipado con guías, consejos prácticos sobre diversos temas, números de teléfono, direcciones, contactos y todo tipo de medidas de seguridad. Además de las recomendaciones estrictas sobre higiene (evitar ensaladas, helados, frutas sin pelar, bebidas con hielo, fumar en narguiles...) Me informaron sobre los taxistas y los comerciantes pegajosos, y sobre cómo no ser generoso con las propinas si no quería estar rodeado permanentemente por un enjambre de mendigos. Me dijeron que no fuera a los barrios más pobres y que, si lo hacía, no fotografiara a los habitantes por temor a que se enfadaran. Debo admitir que, poco después de llegar a El Cairo, comencé a olvidar todas las advertencias; así que al final solo estaba prestando atención a una de ellas: no nadar en las aguas contaminadas del Nilo, donde existe un alto riesgo de infección parasitaria.

Source text - English WHEN Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old man-servant--a combined gardener and cook--had seen in at least ten years.
It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street. But garages and cotton gins had encroached and obliterated even the august names of that neighborhood; only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps-an eyesore among eyesores. And now Miss Emily had gone to join the representatives of those august names where they lay in the cedar-bemused cemetery among the ranked and anonymous graves of Union and Confederate soldiers who fell at the battle of Jefferson.
Alive, Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town, dating from that day in 1894 when Colonel Sartoris, the mayor--he who fathered the edict that no Negro woman should appear on the streets without an apron-remitted her taxes, the dispensation dating from the death of her father on into perpetuity. Not that Miss Emily would have accepted charity. Colonel Sartoris invented an involved tale to the effect that Miss Emily's father had loaned money to the town, which the town, as a matter of business, preferred this way of repaying. Only a man of Colonel Sartoris' generation and thought could have invented it, and only a woman could have believed it.

Source text - English Suppose a farmer has a fixed amount of land -say 100 acres- in which he has planted corn. Assuming the farmer does not cultivate his corn-fields at all, his yields will be, say, 40 bushels per acre. If he cultivates the land once, output may rise to 50 bushels per acre. A second cultivation may increase output to 57 bushels per acre, a third to 61, and a fourth to, say, 63. But further cultivations will add little or nothing to total output. Successive cultivations add less and less to the land’s yield. If this were not the case, the world’s needs for corn could be fulfilled by extremely intense cultivation of this single 100-acre plot of land. Indeed, if diminishing returns didn’t occur, the world could be fed out of a flowerpot.
The law of diminishing returns also holds true in non-agricultural industries.
The low of diminishing marginal product.
The marginal product (or marginal productivity) of a productive factor is the extra product or output added by one extra unit of that factor, while other factors are being held constant.
Labor’s marginal product is the extra output you get when you add one unit of labor, holding the other inputs constant. Similarly, land’s marginal product is the change in total product resulting from and additional unit of land, which all other inputs held constant –and so forth for any factor.
The law of diminishing returns could be renamed the law of diminishing marginal product.
Translation - Spanish Supongamos que un granjero tiene una cantidad fija de tierra, por ejemplo 100 acres, en la que ha sembrado maíz. Suponiendo que el agricultor no cultive sus campos de maíz en absoluto, sus rendimientos serán, digamos, 40 fanegas por acre.
