Source text - Spanish Los problemas sensoriales en el Autismo son muy habituales y están relacionados con las dificultades en la interacción social, el desarrollo del lenguaje y el comportamiento.
A lo largo de los últimos años, hemos oído hablar de la importancia de la Integración Sensorial, de que nuestro cerebro ordene las sensaciones de forma adecuada para poder dar una respuesta correcta y ajustada al contexto. Esta sería la primera premisa para que el desarrollo de un niño o niña se produzca de forma óptima.

Si esto no ocurre de la forma adecuada, seguramente nos encontraremos con un niño o niña con un Trastorno del Procesamiento Sensorial. Podemos encontrar niños/as cuyo comportamiento sea desorganizado, demasiado activo e impulsivo, o todo lo contrario, aparentemente cansado y con bajo tono muscular. Otros niños/as pueden rechazar el juego con iguales porque le molesta que le toquen de forma inesperada, y otros sin embargo necesitar demasiado el contacto físico y tener un juego demasiado brusco.

¿Pero qué ocurre en las personas con Autismo?
Los niños/as con autismo a menudo tienen problemas para localizar estímulos táctiles o saber dónde tienen sus manos cuando no pueden verlas. Además, se añaden las dificultades para planificar movimientos, pero principalmente se observan tres rasgos que explicarían los desafíos en el procesamiento sensorial.
En primer lugar, el cerebro de los niños/as con Autismo puede no estar registrando correctamente los datos sensoriales, es decir, la información que llega a través de los sentidos; sonidos, imágenes, texturas, olores, movimiento, temperatura… Esto explicaría por qué unas veces prestan muy poca atención a unas cosas y reaccionan en exceso a otras.
En segundo lugar, esos datos sensoriales deben modularse de forma adecuada. Los niños/as con Autismo tienen problemas de modulación sobre todo con los estímulos táctiles y vestibulares (movimiento), sintiéndose inseguros gravitatoriamente (no le gusta el columpio, tienen miedo de subir a un tobogán o bicicleta..) y actúan a la defensiva cuando le tocan o se sienten incómodos y evitan estar en lugares con muchas personas.
Y por último, la parte del cerebro encargada de querer buscar sensaciones nuevas y descubrir, no está funcionando correctamente mostrando poco o nulo interés en hacer cosas nuevas.

Todas las conductas observables en los niños/as con Autismo tienen una explicación desde el punto de vista cognitivo; percepción, lenguaje, aspectos motores, atención, razonamiento… Nuestra misión es realizar un buen análisis para llegar al origen y poder trabajar directamente sobre dicha función. No obstante es importante que los familiares conozcan el porqué de las diferentes respuestas de su hijo/a y puedan ayudar mediante la comprensión y el respeto a la forma de procesar y sentir que tiene su hijo/a.
“Igual que el sistema que registra sensaciones, el sistema “quiero hacerlo” también es deficiente en los niños con Autismo. Una madre o padre puede poner todo su empeño en intentar que su hijo/a se ponga un calcetín, y que el niño actúe como si no supiera y nunca fuera a aprender, sin querer cooperar. Parecería que el niño se resiste obstinadamente a los esfuerzos de su padre o madre cuando lo más probable es que su cerebro no sea capaz de encender el sistema “quiero hacerlo”. A lo mejor horas más tarde el niño se pone solo fácilmente el calcetín.”
¿Cómo repercuten los probemas sensoriales de mi hijo/a en las rutinas diarias?
Los problemas sensoriales en el Autismo repercuten directamente en el aprendizaje así como en las rutinas de vida diaria, incidiendo en los hábitos de higiene como por ejemplo la ducha, cortar el pelo, vestirse o lavarse las manos y los dientes. Además de los problemas alimenticios o de sueño.
Es necesario, por tanto, tratar las dificultades sensoriales y además proporcionar estrategias en el hogar para que los niños/as alcancen un nivel óptimo de autonomía y de bienestar emocional.
Integración de los sentidos y rutinas
¿Cómo puedo ayudar a mi hijo/a en sus problemas sensoriales?
Las familias tienen un papel fundamental en este sentido, y son las que más pueden ayudar a sus hijos/as. Con unos padres comprensivos que apoyan su desarrollo y respetan sus dificultades, el niño/a tendrá menos desafíos y será más feliz.
A continuación te damos 5 consejos;
Reconocer el problema: observa a tu hijo/a, eres quien mejor le conoce. Ponte en marcha cuantos antes para poder dotarle de los recursos que necesite.
Anticipa las crisis emocionales. Los padres deben aprender a identificar qué factores pueden desencadenar una posible sobreestimulación en su hijo/a; demasiados niños/as, luces, ruido…
Aprende a regular a tu hijo/a. Conoce qué sensaciones le calman, le tranquilizan. Con la ayuda de un especialista crea un espacio para la regulación en el hogar. Controla el entorno: organizar y estructurar el tiempo y el espacio ayuda a conservar la estabilidad. Para ello es recomendable el uso de apoyos visuales (si esta es la forma de procesamiento de tu hijo/a).
Céntrate en lo positivo. Señala lo que sí quieres que haga. Ayúdale a volver a la calma y después ofrécele sensaciones reguladoras: un abrazo, mecerse, su manta favorita…
Busca ayuda profesional. La capacitación familiar debe ser la base de cualquier programa de intervención. Es necesario que cuentes con los especialistas pertinentes: terapeutas ocupacionales expertos en Integración Sensorial, logopedas, maestros/as, psicólogos/as… que puedan dar respuesta a tus preocupaciones diarias. Un equipo transdisciplinar dará respuestas globales teniendo en cuenta que cada familia es única y singular.

If this doesn’t happen in the right way, surely, we will end up with a kid with a Sensory Processing Disorder. We can find kids whose behaviour is chaotic, too active or impulsive, or completely opposite, appears to be tired or have a low muscle tone. Other kids may refuse to play with other because they do not want to be unexpectedly touched and others however, unnecessarily need physical contact and play an overly rough game.

Why does is happen to people with Autism?
Kids with autism often have problems in finding tactile stimulus or knowing where to place their hands when they can’t see them. Also, it is even more difficult to plan movements, but mainly there are three traits that explain the challenges of sensory processing.
Firstly, a kid with autism’s brain doesn’t register sensory data correctly. So, the information collected by the senses, sounds, images, textures, smells, movements, temperature... Which explains why sometimes they don’t pay attention to things and react excessively to others.
Secondly, that sensory data should adjust itself in the right way. Kids with Autism find it difficult to adjust, especially with tactile and vestibular (Movement) stimulus, making them feel gravitationally uneasy (They don’t like the swings, they are scare to go on a slide or ride a bike...) and they act defensively when they are touched, or they feel uncomfortable and avoid places with large crowds.
And lastly, the part of the brain in charge of searching and finding new sensation is not working correctly, showing little or no interest in trying new things.

All behaviours common in children with Autism have an explanation from a cognitive point of view; Perception, language, aspects, motors, attention, reasoning... Our mission is to complete an analysis that will lead us to the origin and to be able to work directly on said function. However, it’s important that the family know why their kids respond differently, so that they can help by understanding and respecting the way in which the kid processes and feels.
“In the same way the system that registers sensations is weak, so is the system of “I want to do it”, in kids with Autism. A mother or father could try their hardest to get their kid to put on a sock and the kid could act like he doesn’t know how and will never learn how, without wanting to cooperate. Sensory problem in Autism directly impact the education as much as the daily routines, coming into play in their hygienic routines like for example showering, haircuts, getting dressed, washing hand or brushing teeth. As well as nutritional and sleeping problems.
Therefore, it is necessary to handle sensory challenges and put strategies in place at home so that kids can reach an optimum level of independence and emotional wellbeing.

How can I help my kid with his sensory problems?
Families lay an important role is this facet and they are the one who can help their children the most. With understanding parents whom supports his development and respect his difficulties, the kid will face less challenges and will be happier.
The following are 5 tips;
Recognising the problem: Watch you kid, you are who knows him best. Start as early as you can to be able to equip them with any resources he may need.
Foresee emotional meltdowns. Parents should learn to identify factors that could over-stimulate their child; too many kids, lights, noises...
Learn to control your kid. Get to know what sensations calm or sooth them. With the help of a specialist create a safe space at home. La Teoría Cognitiva Social de Albert Bandura, antes conocida como la Teoría del Aprendizaje Social, expone que nuestros niños y niñas adquieren el conocimiento mediante observación y a través del modelaje. Esta teoría combinó el interés conductual por las consecuencias e interés cognoscitivo en el pensamiento. La misma brinda importancia a las interacciones entre la conducta, el ambiente y las características personales. De igual forma a las creencias sobre las capacidades personales y el aprendizaje mediante la observación y los modelos (Woolfolk, 2010).
En términos sencillos, podríamos indicar que el aprendizaje y/o el conocimiento llegan mediante la observación de las conductas de otras personas y el modelaje de las mismas. Según Woolfolk (2010), Bandura expuso que cuando observamos a otros aprendemos tanto de sus acciones como de los objetos relacionados a tales acciones. Por otra parte, se perfecciona el comportamiento aprendido pues mediante la observación de la conducta de los demás, podemos identificar las conductas que ya hemos puesto en práctica. Un dato curioso es un ejemplo utilizado por Bandura en el que expuso que si un niño disfruta jugar con un objeto que ha sido ignorado durante todo el día, otro compañero al observarlo, puede interesarse en el mismo objeto o juguete.
Bandura expone que si los miembros de una clase observan a un estudiante quebrantar una regla y no recibir alguna consecuencia o sanción, los demás compañeros aprenderán que el transgredir una regla no siempre conlleva consecuencias negativas. Por esta razón, repetirán tal acción o conducta. Por otra parte, sostuvo que si quien comete la transgresión es un líder admirado, los efectos del modelamiento serían más pronunciados (Woolfolk, 2010).
El imitar o repetir las conductas negativas mencionadas provocan que el aprendizaje se vea afectado. El modelo de Bandura, por su parte, permite la enseñanza de nuevas conductas tales como: realizar tareas, deportes, oficios, entre otros.
En el ambiente escolar y/o educativo, los docentes sirven de modelo a sus estudiantes, los cuales a través de estos adquieren aprendizaje. Cabe señalar que el proceso educativo ha sido descrito como uno de aprendizaje continuo. Por último, según Woolfolk (2010) el modelo de Bandura impacta de manera positiva el aprendizaje.

Muchos padres asumen que la responsabilidad del aprendizaje es únicamente una labor de los docentes y/o de la escuela en general, por lo que los perciben como responsables. Es importante destacar que si nos dejamos llevar por Bandura, podríamos mencionar que los primeros responsables del aprendizaje de los niños y niñas son los padres o personas responsables, ya que son quienes modelan esas primeras conductas y/o comportamientos a sus hijos.
Los primeros educadores de los niños y niñas son sus padres desde el hogar. Estos les modelan las conductas y les muestran las maneras de cómo deben comportarse o actuar, y los niños y niñas aprenden mediante la observación de esas conductas provenientes de sus padres. Por otro lado, ese aprendizaje es extendido a la escuela en donde a través de los docentes y sus compañeros de clases, continúa el modelaje y el aprendizaje mediante la observación.
Todo lo antes mencionado en relación a la Teoría de Bandura puede aplicarse en niños y niñas con autismo. Estos aprenden de manera mucho más rápida mediante estrategias interactivas, visuales y auditivas. De igual modo, aprenden observando y modelando conductas y comportamientos. Es de vital importancia destacar el compromiso de los padres en cuanto al aprendizaje de sus hijos.
El aprendizaje para estos niños y niñas con autismo, como parte de quienes reflejan un desarrollo atípico (tanto como en niños típicos), es responsabilidad primeramente de los padres y luego de la escuela, es una combinación entre ambos escenarios. Ambos ambientes son de gran importancia en el desarrollo de dicho aprendizaje en los niños y niñas con autismo, por lo que como padres no podemos dejar la responsabilidad completa a los docentes.
Los niños y niñas con autismo tienen la capacidad de aprender a su ritmo mediante la utilización de diferentes técnicas y estrategias de enseñanza. Si bien es cierto que se requiere que los docentes cuenten con la preparación adecuada para ayudarles en el proceso de aprendizaje, es requerido que los padres asuman su rol. Estos pueden colaborar en dicho proceso, brindando seguimiento a las tareas, practicando con estos en el hogar, manteniendo una buena comunicación con los docentes, demás personal escolar y educándose sobre el tema. De esta forma pueden trabajar en unidad con los educadores a quienes se les ha asignado la responsabilidad total.
Desde mi punto de vista como profesional y como madre de un niño con autismo, aseguro que cuando logramos una combinación del aprendizaje en el hogar y el aprendizaje en la escuela, podemos evidenciar grandes cambios en nuestros hijos. Es de suma importancia que como padres responsables nos orientemos y de esta manera poder colaborar mejor con la educación y aprendizaje de nuestros niños con autismo. ¡Podemos hacerlo!

Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, previously know as Social Learning Theory, states that our children learn through observing and imitating others. This theory combines the behavioural interest due to consecuences and Conginitive interest in thought. The same theory gives importance to the link between behaviour, surroundings and personal characteristics. In the same way as the beliefs on personal capabilites and learning through observation and role models (Woolfolk, 2010).
Simply put, one could say that learning and/or knowledge is adquired by means of observing the behaviour of others and imitating it. According to Woolfolk (2010), Banduro showed that when we observe others we learn their actions along with objects related to their actions. Furthermore, we can identify the behaviours we have already put into practice and we perfect these behaviours we learn through further observing how others behave. An interesting point is the example that Bandura uses in which he stated that, if a kid enjoys playing with something that has been ignored all day, if another kid sees, he too could become interested in that object.
Bandura states that if memebers of a class see a student break a ruler and face no repercussions, other classmates will learn that breaking a ruler doesn’t always lead to negative consequences. By this logic, they will imitate this action or behaviour. Furthermore, he affirmed that if whoever completed the action first is looked up to or a leader, he is more likely to be copied (Woolfolk, 2010).
Imitating or repeating the aforementioned bad behaviour can lead to their learning being afected. Bandura’s model allows learning new behaviours, such as: doing activities, sports, hobbies, amongst others.
In a school or educational setting, teachers serve as rolemodels, who provide the education for the students. It’s worth mentioning that the education process has been described as ongoing learning. Lastly, according to Woolfolk (2010) Bandura’s model has possitives effects on learning.

A lot of parents asume that the resposiblity of educating is only for the teachers and/or the school in general, so they hold them responsible. Its important to metion that in line with Bandura the people mainly responsible for their children’s learning are parents or those responsible for them, as they are the ones who first mould the behaviours and mannerisms of their children.
The first teachers a child has are their parents at home. They shape their manners and show them how they should behave and act. Children learn by means of observing the behaviours that their parents show. Furthermore, this education is extended to the school where through teachers and classmates they continue to learn and shape themselves by means of observing.
Everything mentiones aboved in relations to Bandura’s theory can be aplied to kids with Autism. They learn quicker through ways that are focused on interaction, visuals and audio. In the same way, they learn by observing and imitating both behaviours and mannerisms. It’s really important to highlight the obligations parents have in terms of educating their child.
Educating children with autism, as well as those who reflect unsual development (as wells as typical children), is primaraly the responsibility of the parents and then the school’s, but ultimately a combination of both. Both environments are important in the development of an autistic child’s learning and so as parents we can’t leave all responsibility to the teachers.
Children with autism have the ability to learn at their own pace using different learning techniques. As much as it is necesary that teachers have the correct training to help them in their learning process, parent should also play their part. They can participate in the proccess by making sure their kids do their homework, practicing with them at home, keeping in contact with the teachers, other members at school and educating themselves on the matter. In this way they can work together with those who have been given all the responsibility of educating them.
From my profesional point of view and as a mother of a child with autism, I make sure that when we are able to learn something both at home and at school, we can notice the big change in our kids. Its very important that as responsible parents we positions ourselves so that we can colaborate with the education and learning of our autistic child. We can do it!
