15 Myth VS. Reality
1. Myth 1- COVID-19 affects only older people.
Reality- People of all ages can be infected. People with pre-existing medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease) are more vulnerable.
2. Myth 2
- COVID-19 doesn’t spread in hot, humid climates.
- Cold Weather can kill COVID-19.
Reality - COVID-19 can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including hot & humid weather.
3. Myth 3- Holding your breath for more than 10 seconds means you do not have COVID-19.
Reality - How long you can hold your breath has nothing to do with COVID-19. If you suspect you have COVID-19, immediately consult with designated health professionals.
4. Myth 4 - Hot bath prevents COVID-19.
Reality - Viruses do not get killed by hot shower/bath temperature, typically a max of 48oC. They get killed by at least 70oC, while our normal body temperature is around 36.5o-37oC.
5. Myth 5 - COVID-19 means death.
Reality - Most people do recover (around 80%).
6. Myth 6 - COVID-19 transmits through mosquito bites
Reality - Current evidence don’t suggest that COVID-19 is transmitted by mosquitoes.
It spreads primarily through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes or through droplets of saliva or nose discharge.
7. Myth 7- Spraying Alcohol or Chlorine all over the body kills COVID-19
Reality – It does not kill viruses that have already entered the body. Spraying such substances can harm mucous membranes (i.e. eyes, mouth)
8. Myth - I don’t have COVID-19 as thermal scanners did not detect fever in me.
Reality - Thermal scanners can’t detect people infected but not yet sick with fever. It takes 2-10 days before infected people become sick and develop a fever.
9. Myth - Antibiotics prevent and treat COVID-19.
Reality - COVID-19 is a virus and Antibiotics work against bacteria but not viruses. However, Antibiotics can be used under doctor supervision to treat COVID-19 patients with secondary imposed bacterial infections.
Reality - There is no specific recommended medicine for COVID-19. The best protection is to frequently clean hands and avoid infection by not touching eyes, mouth, and nose.
11. Myth 11- Buying products shipped from COVID-19 affected countries will make a person sick.
Reality - It is unlikely to get COVID-19 from internationally shipped packages, which is usually in transit for days or weeks.
12. Myth 12 - COVID-19 spreads through pets.
Reality - As of now, there is no evidence that pets get COVID-19 from contact with an infected human, or vice versa.
13. Myth 13- Drinking excess water flushes COVID-19 out of the system.
Reality - Not really. In fact, too much water can cause water intoxication.
14. Myth 14 - Only people who have tested positive need to stay home and isolate themselves.
Reality - Social Distancing is to protect individuals, especially the most vulnerable by slowing down transmission. All can become infected and transmit infection and hence need to slow down transmission by staying away from crowds and reducing contacts.
15. Myth 15- It is no more dangerous than typical seasonal flu.
Reality - Mortality rate of COVID-19 is much higher than typical seasonal flu, with potential to cause more deaths.
The Novel Coronavirus is a once-a-century pandemic of unprecedented nature.
Tackling the virus requires concerted measures from the community.

15 خرافة مقابل الحقيقة
1. الخرافة (1): يصيب (كوفيد-19) فقط كبار السن.
الحقيقة: يمكن ان يصيب جميع الاعمار، والأشخاص المصابين بحالات طبية (الربو، السكري، القلب) أكثر عرضة للإصابة من غيرهم.
2. الخرافة (2)
- لا ينتشر (كوفيد-19) في الجو الحار أو الرطب.
- يقتل الجو البارد (كوفيد-19).
الحقيقة: يمكن لفيروس (كوفيد-19) ان ينتقل في جميع المناطق بما في ذلك المناطق ذات الجو الرطب والحار.
3. الخرافة (3): حبس انفاسك لأكثر من 10 ثواني يعني أنك غير مصاب بفيروس (كوفيد-19).
الحقيقة: قدرتك على حبس انفاسك لأي مدة كانت لا علاقة له بفيروس (كوفيد-19). إذا كنت تشك بإصابتك بفيروس (كوفيد-19)، استشار المختصين الصحيين.
4. الخرافة (4): الحمام الساخن يمنع الإصابة بفيروس (كوفيد-19).
الحقيقة: لا تموت الفيروسات بالحمام الساخن، عادة بدرجة حرارة أقصاها 48 درجة مئوية. بل تموت الفيروسات بدرجة حرارة 70 مئوية على الأقل، في حين ان درجة حرارة اجسامنا الطبيعية هي 36.5-37 درجة مئوية.
5. الخرافة (5): (كوفيد-19) يعني الموت.
الحقيقة: يشتفى معظم الناس منه (بنسبة حوالي 80%).
6. الخرافة (6): ينتقل (كوفيد-19) عن طريق لسعات البعوض.
الحقيقة: لا يوجد دليل حالياً على أن (كوفيد-19) ينتقل عن طريق البعوض. فهو ينتشر عن طريق رذاذ سعال او عطاس الشخص المصاب أو لعابه أو مخاطه.
7. الخرافة: رش الكحول أو الكلور على الجسم يقتل (كوفيد-19).
الحقيقة: ذلك لا يقتل الفيروسات التي دخلت جسمك. ورش هذه المواد يمكن أن يؤذي الاغشية المخاطية (مثل العين والفم).
8. الخرافة: أنا غير مصاب بفيروس (كوفيد-19) لان الماسح الحراري لم يظهر حمى لدي.
الحقيقة: لا يمكن للماسح الحراري تحديد الشخص المصاب لكنه يبين فقط غير المصابين بالحمى. يحتاج الشخص المصاب من يومين الى 10 أيام لتظهر الاعراض ويصاب بالحمى.
9. الخرافة: تمنع المضادات الحيوية (كوفيد-19) وتعالجه.
الحقيقة: (كوفيد-19) هو فيروس والمضادات الحيوية تعمل ضد البكتريا وليس الفيروسات. ومع هذا يمكن استخدام المضادات الحيوية بإشراف طبيب لعلاج مرضى (كوفيد-19) المصابين بعدوى بكتيرية مصاحبة.
10. الخرافة (10)
- الثوم يساعد في الوقاية من (كوفيد-19).
- اللقاحات المضادة للالتهاب الرئوي تقي من (كوفيد-19).
- مصابيح التعقيم بالأشعة فوق البنفسجية تقتل (كوفيد-19).
- سائل الغرغرة يقضي على (كوفيد-19).
الحقيقة: لا يوجد علاج محدد يوصى به لفيروس (كوفيد-19). وأفضل طرق الوقاية هي تنظيف اليدين باستمرار وتفادي لمس العينين والفم والانف.
11. الخرافة (11): شراء المنتجات المرسلة من البلدان التي أبلغت عن حالات إصابة بفيروس (كوفيد-19) سوف تسبب المرض للمشتري.
الحقيقة: ليس من المحتمل الإصابة بفيروس (كوفيد-19) من الطرود المشحونة عالمياً التي عادةً ما تنقل لعدة أيام أو أسابيع.
12. (الخرافة 12): ينتشر (كوفيد-19) عن طريق الحيوانات الاليفة.
الحقيقة: حتى الان لا يوجد دليل على ان الحيوانات الاليفة تصاب بفيروس (كوفيد-19) من الاختلاط بالإنسان المصاب او العكس.
13. الخرافة (13): شرب الكثير من الماء يطرد (كوفيد-19) من الجسم.
الحقيقة: ليس كذلك، وشرب الكثير من الماء يمكن ان يسبب تسمم المياه.
14. الخرافة (14): فقط من لديه إصابة مؤكدة بالعدوى يحتاج ان يبقى بالمنزل ويعزل نفسه.
الحقيقة: العزل الاجتماعي هو لحماية الافراد خاصة الاكثر عرضة للإصابة وذلك بإبطاء الانتقال حيث يمكن ان يصاب الجميع وينقلوا الإصابة وعليه نحتاج لإبطاء انتقال الإصابة وذلك بالبقاء بعيدين عن التجمعات وتقليل الاختلاط.
15. الخرافة (15): هذا الفيروس ليس أخطر من الأنفلونزا الموسمية العادية.
الحقيقة: معدل الوفيات بفيروس (كوفيد-19) اعلى بكثير من الانفلونزا الموسمية العادية، مع احتمالية ان يسبب وفيات أكثر.
إن فيروس كورونا المستجد هو جائحة غير مسبوقة تحصل مرة كل قرن.
تتطلب مواجهة الفيروس إجراءات مشتركة من المجتمع.
