English to Persian (Farsi): the power of neuroplasticity General field: Science Detailed field: Psychology
Source text - English Focusing the Energies of Your Thoughts
Something else happens when you decide to focus on what you want.
You take “this” much energy (spread your arms out as wide as you can), and
put it “here” (bring your hands together and touch one point on the desk or
something in front of you). Focusing is about taking a lot of energy, and
focusing all of it on one finite point.
A clear example of the power of focused energy is that of sunlight
through a magnifying glass. You go outside on a sunny day and sit on the
grass. You touch the grass in the beautiful sunlight, and the grass feels soft
and cool. In fact, it’s a cool day. You have a magnifying glass with you. As an
experiment, you hold the glass, which is only two or three inches in diameter,
a few inches above a section of grass.
Within moments, because it’s collecting the sun’s rays, the magnifying
glass focuses those light rays on a small point in the grass, and it takes only
seconds for the focused rays of the sun to turn the point of grass from smoke
to flame.
A collection of just a few inches of sunlight, focused by a piece of glass,
turns the cool green leaves of grass into a fire of intense heat, in seconds. That
is energy being focused. (And thoughts are energy.)
When you want to imprint clear, strong messages, programs, or goals in
your brain, it requires the intense focus of your thoughts. Your thoughts are
like the sunlight, being focused by your goals. The more of your personal
energy you bring into intense focus, the stronger the imprint will be. Your
success depends on the strength of the neuroplastic programs you imprint in
your brain, and you create that strength by the intensity of your focus.
This is why most of the greatest achievers we have ever known have said
they were completely dedicated to their goal and focused on reaching it. No
matter what their goal, it got down to their mental focus — the focused
energy each of those achievers added to their intent, created pathways in their
brain that were so strong they could overcome any obstacle they encountered.
Your achievement will be determined by the amount of focus you apply
to the goal. Reaching goals is based on neurons. Success is neurological.
Chapter 13
Rule #5 – Repetition
How Pathways are Formed
“The secret to success is repetition. Repetition, repetition, repetition.”
We’ve seen in the rules of programming we’ve covered so far —
mindfulness, choices, intention, and focus — that each of those rules is vital to
your success in rewiring your brain. But the next rule, repetition, stands above
all others when it comes to success in almost anything you do.
Your brain forms almost all of its new neural pathways through
repetition. It also strengthens older pathways with the same process. When
I’m asked to give my opinion of what really forms the foundation of success
of any kind, my answer is, “Repetition, repetition, repetition.” That’s how the
brain works. That’s how success works.
Even as you’re reading this book, I’ve used selective repetition to help
you wire in and retain the information you’re reading more easily. As an
example, something that is especially important will be focused on several
times throughout the book, often viewed from more than one perspective.
This makes key points more understandable and memorable. It takes
advantage of the way the brain reinforces retention by creating stronger
neural pathways as a result of the repetition. The more familiar something
begins to feel, the more “permanent” the thought has become.
It is through repetition that you learn, and through repetition that you
make the unfamiliar, familiar. And it is through repetition that you create most
of the neural pathways that you have stored in your brain.
That’s true of everything from muscle memory for athletes, to learning
multiplication tables in math, to how to drive a car without having to think
about it. “Second nature” is created entirely though repetition.
It’s also why practice makes perfect — because it is by wiring the right
neural pathways in the brain over and over again, that what we’re practicing
becomes a “permanent” new part of the brain’s circuitry.
It was through repetition that we got most of our mental programs and all
of our attitudes in the first place. That’s why we believe what we believe, andthat’s how we got the pictures of ourselves that tell us who we are today. The
primary tool of neuroplasticity, that forms all of our programs, is repetition.
How did we learn the words to songs we heard when we were young,
and learn them so permanently we still know them word for word today? We
learned them by hearing them day after day; we learned them through
repetition.
What about our eating habits — what we like to eat, and how much we
eat? Our eating habits were created by our choices of what we eat, and how
much, being wired and rewired into our brain over and over again. We eat the
way we eat because of repetition.
It was through repetition that we wired in all of our habits: what time we
get up; what we talk about most; whether or not we procrastinate; what makes
us happy; how fast we drive; how we dress; how we comb our hair; how
quickly we answer the phone and how we answer it; how organized we are;
what we do in our spare time; how well we take care of our health; our
manners and how polite we are; what upsets us and what makes us happy, and
every one of the hundreds of other habits each of us has.
Key Point:
It is through repetition (the brain’s principal tool of programming) that
you will make any future improvements in yourself, or change your habits in
any lasting way.
Each time you send a repeated message to your brain, you’re applying
another, reinforcing layer of pavement to that specific neural roadway. You’re
sending nutrition and energy to that pathway, stimulating it, and making it
stronger.
The use of repetition is a powerful tool your brain requires to move a
thought or experience from “momentary,” to “long term,” to “permanent”
memory storage.
For now, let me repeat: the underlying secret to creating almost all
neuroplastic changes in your brain, is repetition
Chapter 14
Rule #6 — Emotion
The Secret Ingredient
This is another rule of programming that will begin to help you as soon as you
begin practicing it. When you’re wiring your brain, strong emotions create strong programs.
Your neuroplastic activity is strongest when your emotions are the most
intense. Your emotions create a chemical fuel that ignites programming
activity in your brain.
If you want to wire your brain with a new program, add your feelings to
your goal. Emotions are powerful chemical messengers in the brain, and one
of the strongest imprinters you have on your side. Because of this, when
you’re actively and consciously rewiring your brain, you will wire in most
what you care about most
