From virgin rainforest to Andean peaks and Inca ruins, Peru has an incredible natural and cultural heritage. Jane Dunford discovers how one local entrepreneur is using eco-tourism to preserve it.
It's a noise that would shake you from the deepest sleep. A cross between roaring wind, guttural grunt and small plane taking off, it echoes eerily in the dawn air. From the comfort of my mosquito-net tented bed I try to work out what it is - and marvel at the early-morning din of the Peruvian Amazon.
Around 60 per cent of Peru is tropical rainforest - only Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo have more - and my lodge, Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in Tambopata National Park, is in one of the wildest areas in the country (and, as I found out that morning, home to the noisy howler monkey).
Back in the early 1970s, when eco-tourism was hardly a twinkle in the travel industry's eye, Peruvian entrepreneur Jose Koechlin had the idea for a small tourist lodge and environmental research centre in the heart of the jungle. He had been working as a producer on Werner Herzog's madcap film Aguirre, the Wrath of God, starring the volatile Klaus Kinski as a Spanish conquistador searching for El Dorado, filmed largely in Huallaga in the north-eastern Amazon. Despite the treacherous working conditions - and Kinski's legendary tantrums - Koechlin developed a passion for the rainforest and started looking for somewhere to set up an ecological reserve.
The Puerto Maldonado region - a short flight from Cuzco, with relatively easy access to virgin rainforest - proved just the place. Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica and its sister NGO, the Inka Terra Association, were born, with the aim of helping preserve what was there, and benefiting local people, too.
"When you like something you want to keep the picture as is, freeze it - that's conservation,' says Koechlin.
These days the lodge has electricity should you prefer bulbs to lanterns, the original six thatched huts have grown to 40 luxurious cabanas, and more camps have popped up along the river - but in essence the experience remains the same: total immersion in a pristine environment which boasts a diversity of wildlife almost without equal.
You arrive at Reserva Amazonica by boat, a 45-minute river trip from Puerto Maldonado in staggering heat and humidity along the Madre de Dios river. Nature's show starts as soon as we board: a cayman is basking on the muddy bank; turkey vultures fly overhead. We pass makeshift gold mines at the water's edge - this is one of the area's main industries beside brazil nut production. In the lodge's garden, before we even reach our rooms, we gawp at a pigmy marmoset (the world's smallest monkey), incredible coloured parrots and a bumbling brown agouti (a long-legged rodent the size of a small cat).
There are 15km of trails for guided rainforest walks in the reserve (a 7,800- hectare concession leased from the government), and a choice of 13 excursions included in the price, from a day trip to the native Ese Eja community to a visit to Gamitana model farm, where locals are taught sustainable farming techniques.
With the knowledgeable Cesar as our guide, we head to Lake Sandoval, a boat ride and short trek away. The trails wind through dense forest, where the slab-like roots of kapok trees are three metres wide, while those of the rainforest palm resemble stilts, and giant strangler fig trees suck the life out of their victims. Extraordinary creatures pop up: vivid blue Morpho butterflies the size of birds (one of 1,265 butterfly species found here) and vicious neumon wasps, whose habit it is to lay its eggs on unwary tarantulas, the larvae later feeding on and killing the spider. 'Mean, eh,' shrugs Cesar.
As we canoe out onto the lake, the stillness is broken only by occasional birdsong and the sound of paddles in the water. The strangest bird is the hoatzin, pear-shaped with a blue face, extra claws on its wings and an extra stomach. In the distance three giant otters bob about in the water - there are only 200 of them in Peru and 18 of them live in this lake.
But this is not the only way of experiencing the jungle: you get another view of it from the reserve's canopy walk, which takes you over 30m up into the tree tops - and a different view again from the river by night, on a magical boat trip with flashing fireflies, fishing bats, cayman eyes shining red in the torchlight, and the Milky Way overhead.
The morning I flew to Peru, I heard on the news about an uncontacted rainforest tribe being spotted from a plane by a film crew looking for evidence of illegal logging. It had taken place about two hours (by helicopter) north of Reserva Amazonica, but brought home just how vast and mysterious the rainforest is - you really don't know what's out there.
Helping scientists explore and record the rainforest's diversity has always been part of Koechlin's plan, and new plant and animal species have been discovered thanks to Inkaterra's work. Sponsored research has found more ant species (362) at Reserva Amazonica than anywhere else in the world, a book on reptiles and amphibians based on study here took 18 years to compile, and a new tome, researched with the Missouri Botanical Garden and completed over 25 years, describes 1,266 plant species. But Koechlin sees this as just a beginning: 'You need data to conserve. We've spent the past 30 years just trying to learn what is out there.'
With the rainforest being eaten into by logging, mining and farming, the conservation message is ever more crucial. Another challenge looms in the shape of the Inter-Ocean Highway, which will run from the Atlantic coast of Brazil to the Pacific coast of Peru when it opens in three years' time, slicing through the Madre de Dios region. The impact it will have can only be guessed.
Besides research, various projects to preserve the environment and its wildlife include a monkey rescue programme and a reforestation scheme, while locals benefit from initiatives to set up family orchards or honey-making businesses. Guests can donate money to specific projects and see the benefits first-hand.
Koechlin's desire to conserve continued in his second venture - the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, in the mountains at Aguas Calientes, 70 miles north-west of Cuzco, which opened in 1991. Some 11 acres of the land purchased were used to build a school, a railway station and a market, while 12 acres are dedicated to preserving the Andean cloud forest in the hotel's grounds.
The only way to reach Aguas Calientes is by train - a breathtaking four-hour journey from Cuzco or hour and a half from Ollantaytambo - or on foot. The reason for coming here is, of course, the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu, a short drive from the town. It took the Incas nearly 20 years to clear the jungle before they could begin building, back in the early 16th century. And when Hiram Bingham rediscovered it nearly 400 years later, dense vegetation hid the enormity of the find. We might not have earned our first sight of the city by walking the Inca Trail, but are still treated to bright sunshine lighting the awe-inspiring ruins and surrounding mountains. Despite endless studies, knowledge of Machu Picchu's function is sketchy. With its temples to the sun, priests' houses and residential areas, it may have been, recent theories suggest, a sacred retreat for Inca royalty, abandoned when the Spanish arrived in Cuzco in the 1550s.
Even without Machu Picchu nearby, the Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is worth the journey. Its grounds hold a world record for native orchid species (375) in their natural habitat and six new species have been discovered here. It's also home to one of the world's biggest concentrations of hummingbirds - 18 species flit by in tiny blurs of gem colours.
I find myself glued to my binoculars on an early-morning birdwatching walk - except when I'm peering through a magnifying glass at the tiny mosquito orchid, less than a centimetre across. On a lantern-lit twilight stroll we learn about the ancient Andean religion, with sun and mountain worship at its heart, and round off the day in the Andean sauna, a small thatched hut made of eucalyptus branches, where you sit and sweat by candlelight before leaping into the rock pool fed by a cold spring.
It's an idyllic place to relax. Andean trout and alpaca steaks are top choices in the two restaurants, bedrooms and lounges have roaring open fires, there are yoga classes in a glass-walled room overlooking Vilcanota River, and the spa's treatment list includes 'Inka purification' which involves a body wrap made from the sacred coca leaf.
Peru's diverse landscape is one of the country's key attractions, and after a couple of days at Machu Picchu we head back up to the ochre mountains and gushing rivers of the Sacred Valley, the site of Inkaterra's Urubamba Villas, which opened in 2006.
It's at an altitude of 2,800m, so our guide Maria-Cristina hands round coca tea and has us chewing coca leaves, rolled into little balls, which she says will alleviate altitude sickness. We sit staring at her like disbelieving hamsters.
The valley is home to some spectacular Inca sites, such as Ollantaytambo, the best surviving example of Inca city planning, with its narrow cobblestone streets and vast hill-top temple and fortress, from where they battled the conquistadors. Feeling slightly breathless and lightheaded with the altitude we climb slowly to the top, marvelling at the size of the finely cut granite boulders - which fit together like a glove, no mortar required - and the huge, steep terraces, once used for farming.
We follow the Urubamba River south to the village of Pisac, where the Sunday market is in full swing. There are a few stalls selling alpaca hats and socks to tourists, but most of the old market square still serves its original purpose. Highland women in colourful dress, with bright knee-length socks and trilby hats, come to exchange produce in an ancient trade called trueque. If you're a potato lover you're in the right place - spuds are the backbone of Peruvian cuisine, in dozens of varieties including the black, dehydrated chuno. There's maize of all kinds, another staple, used to make the local corn beer, chicha. It's been the drink of the Andes for millennia - the Incas used chicha for ritual purposes - and today you can stop at roadside chicharia (marked with red ribbon tied to a stick), and join the locals for a frothy, homemade brew.
Here in the highlands, 80 per cent of people still speak Quechua, the language of the Incas, and life marries ancient tradition and beliefs with 21st-century ways. Mass at the church in Pisac is in Quechua, and religion blends Catholic and Inca traits - the Virgin Mary, for example, is associated with the earth mother, Pachamama. At the village bakery, along with cheese and tomato empanadas (like pasties), you can tuck in to roast guinea pig. It's a highly regarded national dish, often cooked with huacatay, an aromatic herb. In the Cathedral in Cusco a painting depicting the Last Supper has Christ and his companions feasting on the rodent. But I can't bring myself to try it; memories of beloved pets suddenly seem too vivid.
After a day out exploring, returning to the Urubamba Villas feels like coming home. Each of the five two- and three-bedroom villas has its own housekeeper from the local area, who prepares dinner and breakfast (the quinoa pancakes are a treat), lights the fires, and even puts a hot-water bottle in your bed at night.
But this is not the limit of Koechlin's plans. Inkaterra Titilaka, an 18-suite 'exploration lodge and refuge' on Lake Titicaca - the highest navigable lake in the world and birthplace of Incan civilisation, according to legend - opens in February. Floor-to-ceiling windows and wrap-around terraces make the most of the breathtaking views, while there's no scrimping on luxuries like heated floors. Days will be spent visiting local communities, colonial churches and the nearby man-made floating islands of the Uros people, exploring by boat or four-wheel-drive, or on horseback.
In Cuzco a 16th-century colonial house has been converted into the city's first boutique hotel, Inkaterra La Casona, also opening in February. The mansion, in the old quarter of Cuzco, was built on the site of the Palace of Manco Capac, founder of the Inca Empire, and then used by the first Spanish conquistadors. The 11 open-plan suites have all mod cons, including iPods and plasma TVs, while maintaining historic features such as original frescoes, and guests will have use of a private car, driver and guide.
And later in the year, his 15-suite Peru Explorers Club will open in Lima, in the coastal Barranco neighbourhood, playground of the capital's creative elite. Guests will be able to get under the city's skin with the help of expert guides, and luxuries will range from a modern spa to a butler service. Not forgetting its roots, though, Inkaterra is working with local communities in Lima, funding a project for hearing-impaired children and adults (guests are invited to make donations). Koechlin's mission to make tourism work for his country continues.

Dalla foresta pluviale vergine ai picchi andini e le rovine Incas, il Perù vanta un incredibile patrimonio naturale e culturale. Jane Dunford rivela come un imprenditore locale abbia adottato l’ecoturismo allo scopo di preservare questo ricco patrimonio.
È un rumore che vi scuoterebbe dal sonno più profondo. Un incrocio tra il vento di tempesta, un grugnito gutturale ed un piccolo aereo in decollo; il rumore echeggia sinistramente nella brezza dell’alba. Dal comodo letto protetto dalle zanzariere cerco di capire cos’è, meravigliandomi dello schiamazzo mattutino dell’Amazzonia peruviana.
Circa il 60 per cento del territorio nazionale peruviano è rappresentato dalla foresta pluviale tropicale (solo il Brasile e la Repubblica Democratica del Congo ne hanno una percentuale maggiore) e il mio albergo ecologico, Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica nel Parco Nazionale di Tambopata, si trova in una delle aree più selvagge del paese, e come ho potuto constatare stamattina, è anche l’habitat delle rumorose scimmie urlatrici (Alouatta ).
Agli inizi degli anni ’70, quando il concetto di ecoturismo non era ancora stato sviluppato dal settore turistico, l’imprenditore peruviano Jose Koechlin ebbe l’idea di creare nel cuore della giungla un piccolo albergo ecologico che fosse anche un centro di ricerca ambientale. Koechlin aveva lavorato come produttore nello strambo film di Werner Herzog “Aguirre, furore di Dio”. Il film, interpretato dal volubile Klaus Kinski nelle vesti di un conquistador spagnolo alla ricerca dell’ El Dorado, fu girato in gran parte nell’area del fiume Huallaga, nel nord-est dell’Amazzonia. Nonostante le difficili e pericolose condizioni di lavoro, ed i famosi capricci di Kinski, nacque in Koechlin la passione per la foresta pluviale e iniziò da quel momento la ricerca di un posto ideale dove stabilire una riserva ecologica.
L’area di Puerto Maldonado, raggiungibile con un breve volo da Cuzco, e accesso relativamente facile all’Amazzonia, sembrò essere il luogo ideale. Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica e la sua affiliata ONG, l’Inka Terra Association, nacquero con lo scopo di aiutare a preservare l’ecosistema locale e, contemporaneamente, permettere alle comunità locali di trarne vantaggio.
“Quando ci tieni a qualcosa, vuoi conservare l’immagine così com’è, congelarla. Quella è salvaguardia” sostiene Koechlin.
Oggi l’albergo ecologico è fornito di elettricità in caso i clienti preferissero le lampadine alle lanterne e le sei capanne originali con il tetto di paglia sono diventate 40 capanne lussuose. Lungo il fiume sono sorti altri campeggi, ma in sostanza l’esperienza rimane la stessa: un’immersione totale in un ambiente incontaminato che vanta una quasi impareggiabile biodiversità.
Si arriva in barca alla Riserva Amazzonica: un viaggio di 45 minuti da Puerto Maldonado lungo il fiume Madre de Dios, in un caldo ed un’umidità sbalorditivi. Lo spettacolo della natura inizia appena ci imbarchiamo: un caimano (Caiman crocodylus) si crogiola al sole sulla riva melmosa, avvoltoi collorosso (Cathartes aura) volano in alto. Passiamo davanti a delle miniere d’oro improvvisate sulle sponde del fiume. Oltre alla produzione della noce amazzonica, l’estrazione dell’oro è una delle industrie principali della zona. Nel giardino dell’albergo, ancora prima di arrivare alle camere, fissiamo con stupore un uistitì pigmeo (Callithrix pygmaea), la scimmia più piccola al mondo, coloratissimi pappagalli, un inetto aguti dal colore marrone (Dasyprocta variegate), un roditore dalle gambe lunghe e dalle dimensioni di un piccolo gatto.
Nella riserva ci sono 15 km di sentiero adibito a percorsi guidati all’interno della foresta pluviale (7.800 ettari di terreno dati in concessione dal governo) ed una scelta di 13 escursioni incluse nel prezzo, dalla gita di un giorno alla comunità locale di Ese Eja alla visita alla fattoria-modello di Gamitana, dove vengono insegnate tecniche di agricoltura sostenibile alle comunità locali.
Insieme a Cesar, la nostra erudita guida, ci dirigiamo verso il Lago Sandoval, raggiungibile con un percorso in barca ed un breve cammino. I sentieri serpeggiano attraverso la foresta fitta, dove le radici a forma di lastra degli alberi di kapok (Ceiba pentandra) hanno una larghezza di tre metri, mentre quelle della palma tropicale assomigliano a dei trampoli, e gli alberi giganti del fico strangolatore ( Ficus watkinsiana) succhiano la linfa delle loro vittime fino ad ucciderle. Ci imbattiamo in creature straordinarie: le farfalle Morpho bleu (Morpho menelaus) dai colori vividi e dalle dimensioni di uccelli (una delle 1.265 specie di farfalle che si trovano qui) e pericolose vespe icneumonide (Hymenoptera Ichneumonidae), le quali depongono le loro uova su tarantole inconsce, e le cui larve dopo essersi nutrite a spese del ragno, lo uccidono. “Cattive, eh” Cesar commenta con indifferenza.
Mentre avanziamo con la canoa sul lago, il silenzio viene interrotto solo dal canto occasionale degli uccelli e dal tonfo dei remi nell’acqua. L’uccello più strano è l’hoazin (Opisthocomus hoazin), a forma di pera e con la faccia blu, caratterizzato da uno stomaco in più e da artigli sulle ali. In lontananza tre lontre giganti (Pteronura brasiliensis) nuotano nell’acqua – ce ne sono solo 200 in Perù delle quali 18 vivono in questo lago.
Ma questo non è l’unico modo di rimirare la giungla: la si può osservare diversamente dalla passeggiata rialzata all’interno della Riserva che vi porta a più di trenta metri sulle cime degli alberi – mentre un’altra veduta ancora si può avere dal fiume di notte, con una magica escursione in barca sotto le stelle della Via Lattea, dove lucciole luminose, pipistrelli pescatori e gli occhi del caimano che si illuminano di rosso alla luce della torcia offrono uno scenario naturale di rara attrattiva.
Il giorno del mio arrivo in Perù avevo sentito al notiziario che una tribù sconosciuta della foresta era stata individuata da un aereoplano da una troupe cinematografica che cercava prove relative al taglio e trasporto illegale del legname. L’avvistamento, avvenuto a circa due ore di elicottero a nord della Reserva Amazonica, diede prova di quanto è vasta e misteriosa la foresta tanto che non si sa ancora veramente cosa ci sia all’interno.
Aiutare gli scienziati ad esplorare e catalogare la diversità della foresta pluviale è sempre stato parte del progetto di Koechlin, e grazie al lavoro di Inkaterra sono state scoperte nuove specie di piante e animali . La ricerca sponsorizzata ha trovato più specie di formiche (362) nella Reserva Amazonica che in qualsiasi altro posto nel mondo. Ci sono voluti diciotto anni per compilare un libro su rettili e anfibi basato su studi compiuti qui, e un nuovo tomo, redatto in collaborazione con il Missouri Botanical Garden e completato nell’arco di venticinque anni, elenca e descrive 1.266 specie di piante. Tuttavia per Koechlin questo è solo l’inizio: “Ci vogliono dati reali per la salvaguardia di questo patrimonio. Abbiamo passato gli ultimi trent’anni solo a cercare di capire cosa c’è nella foresta”.
Mentre la foresta Amazzonica continua ad essere divorata dal disboscamento, l’estrazione di minerali e l’agricoltura, il messaggio di conservazione diventa sempre più cruciale. Un altro pericolo incombe: il progetto dell’autostrada Inter-oceanica che, quando sarà completata tra tre anni, andrà dalla costa atlantica del Brasile alla costa pacifica del Perù, tagliando la regione di Madre de Dios. Si può solo immaginare l’impatto che avrà sull’ambiente.
Oltre alla ricerca, vari progetti per la salvaguardia dell’ambiente e delle specie protette includono un programma di salvataggio della scimmia ed un piano di rimboschimento, mentre le comunità locali beneficiano delle iniziative quali quella dei frutteti a conduzione familiare o delle ditte per la produzione del miele. I clienti possono fare delle donazioni a progetti specifici e vederne i risultati in prima persona.
Il desiderio di conservazione di Koechlin continua con la sua seconda impresa – l’Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, nelle montagne di Aguas Calientes, 112 km a nord-ovest di Cuzco, aperto nel 1991. Circa 4.5 ettari del terreno comprato furono usati per costruire una scuola, una stazione ferroviaria ed un mercato, mentre quasi 5 ettari sono stati usati per la salvaguardia della foresta amazzonica andina intorno al perimetro dove sorge l’hotel.
Il treno è l’unico mezzo per raggiungere Aguas Calientes – un viaggio mozzafiato a quattro ore da Cuzco o ad un’ora e mezza da Ollantaytambo – o a piedi. La ragione per venire qui è, logicamente, Machu Picchu, la città perduta degli Inca, ad un breve viaggio in auto da Aguas Calientes. Agli Incas furoni necessari 20 anni per disboscare la giungla prima che potessero iniziare a costruire, agli inizi del 1500. E quando Hiram Bingham la riscoprì quasi 400 anni dopo, la vegetazione fitta nascondeva l’enormità della scoperta.
Anche senza il Machu Picchu nelle vicinanze, il Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel ne vale il viaggio. I suoi giardini detengono il record mondiale delle specie di orchidee native nel loro habitat naturale (375) e 6 nuove specie sono state scoperte qui. Questo è anche il posto di una delle più grandi concentrazioni di colibrì (Heliodoxa rubinoides) al mondo – se ne contano 18 specie e sembrano piccole macchie dai colori delle gemme che svolazzano nell’aria.
La diversità del paesaggio del Perù è una delle attrazioni principali del paese. Dopo aver trascorso un paio di giorni al Machu Picchu ritorniamo sulle montagne dal colore ocra e i fiumi esuberanti della Valle Sacra, dove si trova l’Inkaterra Urubamba Villa, aperto nel 2006.
Ci troviamo ad un’altitudine di 2.800m, così la nostra guida Maria Cristina distribuisce tè alla coca e ci fa masticare foglie di coca, arrotolate come palline che, come lei sostiene, alleviino il mal d’altitudine. Ci sediamo a guardarla increduli.
Nella valle si trovano alcuni dei più spettacolari siti Inka, tra cui Ollantaytambo, il miglior esempio restante di pianificazione urbanistica della civiltà Inca. Il sito, caratterizzato da stradine strette fatte di ciottoli e un vasto complesso che include un tempio ed una fortezza, è situato sulla vetta della collina da dove gli Inca si difendevano dai conquistadores. Ci arrampichiamo lenti fino alla cima, un pò affannati ed in preda alle vertigini per l’ altitudine, stupiti dalle dimensioni dei massi di granito tagliati e combaciati tra di loro perfettamente (e senza calce) e dalle immense terrazze ripide che venivano usate anticamente per la coltivazione.
Seguiamo a sud il corso del fiume Urubamba verso il villaggio di Pisac, dove il mercato della domenica è in pieno svolgimento. Ci sono alcune bancarelle che vendono cappelli e calzini di alpaca ai turisti, ma la maggior parte della piazza del mercato vecchio serve ancora allo scopo principale: le donne delle Ande con i vestiti colorati, i calzettoni dai colori vivaci e con i cappelli di feltro vengono a barattare i loro prodotti agricoli in uno scambio di origine antica chiamato trueque.
Se amate le patate siete nel posto giusto perchè sono alla base della cucina peruviana e ce ne sono dozine di varietà incluso il chuno, la patata nera essiccata. Di granoturco, un altro alimento di base, ce n’è di tutti i tipi ed è usato per fare la chicha, la birra locale a base di mais. La chicha è da millenni la bibita delle Ande; gli Inca la usavano nelle funzioni rituali ed oggigiorno nelle chicharias situate ai margini della stada e riconoscibili dal nastro rosso legato ad un bastone ci si può unire alla gente del posto e gustare questa bibita fermentata ancora in modo casareccio.
Qui sulle Ande, l’80 per cento della popolazione parla ancora il quechua, la lingua degli Incas e la vita quotidiana è un incontro di tradizioni e credenze antiche con il moderno stile di vita. La messa nella chiesa di Pisac è celebrata in quechua e nella religione locale convivono le caratteristiche del Cattolicesimo insieme a quelle della religione Inca: la Vergine Maria per esempio viene associata alla divinità della terra madre, Pachamama. Al panificio del villaggio, oltre alle empanadas di formaggio e pomodoro (un tipo di rustico), ci si va anche per mangiare il porcellino d’India arrostito (Cavia porcellus), considerato una delicatezza tra i piatti nazionali e spesso cucinato con un’erba aromatica chiamata huacatay. Nella cattedrale di Cusco, in un dipinto che rappresenta l’Ultima Cena è ritratto Cristo e i suoi discepoli che celebrano mangiando il roditore. Ma non ce la faccio a provare questa delicatezza, improvvisamente i ricordi dei miei amati animaletti sembrano troppo vivi.
Dopo una giornata intera trascorsa in escursione, ritornare all’Urubamba Villas mi fa sentire come se fossi a casa. Ognuna delle cinque ville, con due o tre camere da letto, ha il suo guardiano originario della zona, che prepara cena e colazione ( i pancake con la quinoa sono una delizia), accende il fuoco e la sera mette anche una bottiglia d’acqua calda nel letto.
Ma i progetti di Koechlin non finiscono qui. L’Inkaterra Titilaka, un centro di esplorazione e rifugio di 18 suite aprirà il prossimo febbraio, sul lago Titicaca, il lago navigabile più alto del mondo e, stando a ciò che narra la leggenda, culla della civiltà Inca. Vetrate che vanno dal pavimento fino al soffitto e terrazze che circondano completamente il rifugio rendono il panorama ancora più incantevole, mentre non si badano a spese sui beni di lusso come il pavimento riscaldato. Durante il soggiorno si possono visitare, con esplorazioni in barca, automobile o cavallo, comunità locali, chiese coloniali e le artificiali isole flottanti degli Uros, site non lontano dal rifugio.
A Cuzco, una casa coloniale cinquecentesca è stata convertita nel primo hotel boutique della città, Inkaterra La Casona, che aprirà anche questa a febbraio. La residenza, sita nel quartiere vecchio di Cuzco, fu costruita sul sito del Palazzo di Manco Capac, fondatore dell’Impero Inca, e successivamente usata dai primi conquistadores spagnoli. Le undici suite a pianta aperta sono dotate di tutti i comfort moderni inclusi gli iPod e i televisori a plasma, ma allo stesso tempo conservano caratteristiche storiche come gli affreschi originali; gli ospiti potranno usufruire di auto privata, autista e guida turistica.
E, sempre quest’anno, Koechlin aprirà sulla costa di Lima il Perù Explorer Club, un hotel di 15 suite situato nel quartiere litoraneo di Barranco, raduno dell’elite creativa della capitale. Gli ospiti potranno sperimentare l’autentico stile di vita di Lima con l’aiuto di guide esperte, mentre i servizi di lusso variano dal servizio maggiordomo alle moderne terme. Senza dimenticare il suo progetto iniziale, Inkaterra sta lavorando con le comunità locali di Lima attraverso il finanziamento di un progetto per bambini ed adulti audiolesi, al quale gli ospiti vengono incoraggiati a contribuire con offerte.
La missione di Koechlin continua: far si che il turismo funzioni per il suo paese.

I founded and managed for five years an events and international communication agency supporting country brands, tourism boards, private travel and tourism companies and airlines with their brand positioning and localization of advertising campaigns for the international markets.
My experience includes also two years as in-house English/Italian/Spanish Copywriter and Project Manager at world's leading language-learning provider Rosetta Stone where I managed the biggest localization project for the European region for the launch of a new e-learning product.
