ההיסטוריוגרפיה של הסכסוך הישראלי-ערבי עסקה לאורך כל שישים השנים האחרונות בשלוש התופעות המרכזיות שבהן בא הסכסוך לידי ביטוי: במלחמות שפרצו מדי שנים מספר, בניסיונות להביא את הסכסוך לידי גמר ובעיצוב היחסים ששררו בין הצדדים בתקופות הארוכות למדי בהן לא געשה המלחמה אך גם שלום לא שרר והאלימות לא נעלמה מהנוף. בסקירתו ניסינו להראות כיצד הושפעה ההיסטוריוגרפיה של הסכסוך הן מאירועי הסכסוך עצמו, בעיקר מהשינויים המהותיים שהמלחמות חוללו בתודעה הציבורית, הן מהשינויים שחלו בפוליטיקה הפנים-ישראלית והן מהתפתחות ההיסטוריוגרפיה עצמה וחשיפת מקורות שונים בפני החוקרים.
ראינו כיצד תחושת המצור החריפה שנותרה בציבור לאחר תום מלחמת העצמאות והמהלכים הדרמטיים לבינוי האומה בראשית דרכה דחקו בהיסטוריונים להתגייס להגנת האינטרס הישראלי ולמשימות הגדולות שעמדו בפני הציבור בשנות ה-50 וה-60. ראינו כיצד שינתה מלחמת ששת הימים את הפרספקטיבה, הפיחה ביטחון עצמי בציבור ועוררה מחדש פולמוסים יסודיים על עתידו של הסכסוך. במלחמת ההתשה החלו מופיעים ניצנים חדשים של ביקורת עקרונית על מדיניותה של ישראל בסכסוך. בעקבות מלחמת יום הכיפורים ומלחמת לבנון הראשונה נשבר הקונצנזוס ביחס לקווי המדיניות הרצויה והראויה וחל כרסום במעמדו של צ’ה״ל. ניתן לומר באופן פיוטי למחצה שאם במלחמת ששת הימים חלפה החרדה, במלחמת יום הכיפורים חלפה התהילה. בתחום הפוליטיקה הפנימית ראינו כיצד הפולמוס בין אסכולת בן גוריון ואסכולת שרת, שהוחרף עם פרוץ משבר ״פרשת לבון״, פתח גם בפני היסטוריונים פתחים נרחבים לערעור על המגמות הדומיננטיות. ירידת קרנה של מפלגת העבודה בעקבות מלחמת יום הכיפורים, ירידה שהשתקפה באופן חריף שקיעתו של משה דיין, גיבור הביטחוניזם הישראלי, עוררה גל של רוויזיה גם בכל הנוגע להבנת הפרמטרים של הסכסוך ותולדותיו.
עם זאת, נראה שהשינוי בגישתם של היסטוריונים לסכסוך קשור יותר מכל בתופעות היסטוריוניות. בראש ובראשונה בתופעה הקבועה אשר מופיעה במהלך התפתחות ההיסטוריוגרפיה אצל כל העמים: עליית דור חוקרים צעיר שאין לו קשר ישיר לאירועים שקרו, וגם לא מחויבות כלפיהם כפי שהייתה לדור הראשון, והוא מבקש לסלול לעצמו נתיבות מקוריות. כמו-כן, ראינו ראינו כיצד מושפעת כתיבת קורות העתים מקצב החשיפה של מסמכי הארכיונים ופרסום זיכרונות ויומנים של מי שניהלו את הסכסוך במועדם.
קושי נוסף קשור בשאלות של פרספקטיבה לא רק מכיוון שככל שאנו עוסקים בנושאים קרובים מתקשה ההיסטוריון להתגבר על מחלוקות מדיניות שטרם פג עוקצם ואין הוא יכול לדעת מה יעלה בסופו של הסיפור אותו הוא מספר, אלא שעצם חילופי המאורעות הופכים, לעתים קרובות, את משמעות הדברים. כך למשל ניתן היה להעריך את משמעות ״מבצע קדש״, בעיקר את משמעות הנסיגה מסיני בסופו, רק לאחר שמלחמת ששת הימים והתמיכה המדינית שישראל קיבלה מארצות הברית נתנה לדברים משמעות חדשה לגמרי. בסכסוך הישראלי-ערבי מתיישנים כתבים במהירות מסחררת. ניתן להניח שכל מה שנכתב בישראל על ארגון השחרור הפלסטיני עד שנת 1993 התיישן במידה רבה לאחר שעראפת הגיע לארץ בעקבות הסכמי אוסלו.
כיום אין שוב ויכוח על כך שגם היסטוריונים כבולים למסגרות התרבותיות והאידיאוליוגיות שבתוכן הם חיים ופועלים. עם זאת, אסור לשכוח שיש הבדל מהותי בין כתיבה מגויסת באופן מודע – כתיבה המעמידה את עצמה בכוונת מכוון לרשות אידיאולוגיה או אינטרס ספציפי, וזו לכל הדעות היסטוריוגרפיה גרועה – לבין כתיבה שבה ההיסטוריון אינו מוותר על המאמץ לתאר את המאורעות ולהבין את נסיבותיהן כהווייתם.
Translation - English Conclusion
The historiography of the Arab-Israeli conflict throughout the last sixty years has dealt with three central phenomena through which the conflict is manifest: the wars that erupt every few years, the attempts to bring the conflict to an end and the shaping of relations between the two sides during the long periods in which war was not waged but peace was also absent and violence remained part of the landscape. In our review we tried to show how the conflict’s historiography was influenced by the events of the conflict itself, especially the fundamental changes in public consciousness brought about by those wars, the changes that occurred in inner-Israeli politics, and development in the historiography itself and new sources becoming available to researchers.
We have seen how the acute sense of besiegement that remained with the public after the end of the 1948 war and the dramatic moves that took place in the process of nation building in it’s first years have pushed historians to be recruited in defense of Israeli interests and the substantial work faced by the public during the 50’s and 60’s. We saw how the Six-Day War changed that perspective, injected a sense of self-confidence into the general public and rekindled some fundamental debates over the conflict’s future. With the War of Attrition came the beginnings of principled criticism over Israeli policy in the conflict. As a result of the Yom Kippur and the 1982 Lebanon Wars the consensus regarding the state’s correct and preferable position was broken and the IDF’s status began to wane. One could say semi-poetically that if the Six-Day War brought the end of fear, the Yom Kippur War brought the end of glory. In the sphere of internal politics we saw how the rift between the Ben-Gurion school and the Sharet school, worsened by the crisis brought about by the “Lavon affaire”, also opened a wide path for historians to undermine dominant orthodoxies. The fall into disfavor of the Labour Party, which was most vividly clear with the fall of Moshe Dayan, the hero of Israeli “Defense-ism”, inspired a revisionary wave with regards to the conflict’s parameters and it’s history.
All that being said, it seems that the change in historians’ attitudes to the conflict is tied above all else to historic phenomena, primarily to a repeating phenomenon found in the historiographical development in all nations: the appearance of a young generation of researchers without a direct connection to the events themselves, and without the sense of commitment of the previous generation, which in turn tries to pave it’s own original path. In addition, we saw the way the writing of histories can be affected by the pace of the coming to light of archival material and the publication of diaries and memoirs of those who managed the conflict in it’s time.
Another difficulty is tied to questions of perspective not only stemming from the relative closeness of the historian to events which involve disagreements on policy that may still be playing out without knowing their final form, but also that those final stages can, and often do, change the meaning of the historical process in it’s entirety. Thus, for example, the full meaning of the Sinai Campaign in 1956, and specifically the decision to withdraw from the peninsula in the end, could only be fully appreciated after the end of the SixDay War in 1967, and the beginning of diplomatic support received by the state of Israel from the United States, both of which placed the campaign in a whole new light. In the Arab-Israeli conflict sources turn obsolete in overwhelming speed. It is entirely possible to assume that anything written in Israel about the Palestinian Liberation Organization up until 1993 has aged irreparably after Arafat’s visit to Israel following the Oslo Accords.
Today it is again incontrovertible that historians are indeed limited by the cultural and ideological frameworks in which they live and operate. With that in mind, it is vital that we do not neglect the fundamental difference between a form of writing that is knowingly recruited – writing that intentionally surrenders itself to the benefit of a specific interest or ideology, which by all accounts would constitute bad historiography – and writing in which the historian does not abandon the efforts to describe events and understand their circumstances as they actually occurred.

Source text - English By making work seem more like leisure time, gamification and corporate training games serve as a mechanism for solving a range of problems and, significantly, of increasing productivity. This piece examines the implications of gamification as a means of productivity gains that extend Frederick Winslow Taylor’s principles of scientific management, or Taylorism. Relying on measurement and observation as a mechanism to collapse the domains of labour and leisure for the benefit of businesses (rather than for the benefit or fulfilment of workers), gamification potentially subjugates all time into productive time, even as business leaders use games to mask all labour as something to be enjoyed. In so doing, this study argues, the agency of individuals – whether worker or player – becomes subject to the rationalized nature of production. This rationalization changes the nature of play, making it a duty rather than a choice, a routine rather than a process of exploration. Taken too far or used unthinkingly, it renders Huizinga’s magic circle into one more regulated office cubicle.

Bio
Growing up in Jerusalem in an Arabic and Hebrew bilingual household, and more generally in a multilingual environment, my interest in languages and the access they provide to cultures is something rooted in me from the very beginning. In high school I studied French in earnest and spent a summer in Paris taking courses in the Alliance Française. After that, I went to the Hebrew university and studied in the classics department where I focused on ancient Greek philology, as well as reading Latin. I met my American wife in Jerusalem and we moved to the US six years ago, where I’ve been living with English as my daily language to a comfort level that is effectively bilingual.
Having done both English to Hebrew and Hebrew to English translation in the past, I am excited to join ProZ and find the kind of resources and access to potential clients this platform is sure to provide.
