Source text - English Prior to the subcontractor commencing drilling operations, a 20” OD casing pipe was installed down to the bedrock. By excavating a 3 m wide x 20 m long trench from the entry point towards the sea.
This deepened away from the entry point, allowing the casing to be lowered into position and aligned with the drill line and the 19° entry angle. Once in position, the lower end of the casing was covered with a cement slurry and the trench was partially backfilled.
The casing pipe guaranteed drill mud returns to the entry point and ensured that the pathway to the rock hole remained open should the drill string have to be removed from the hole.
Only a limited 25 x 25 m area was available for the drilling spread within the quarry. Therefore, the water storage, mud mixing and mud recycling plant was erected outside the quarry, some 120 m from the drilling spread. The subcontractor laid concrete foundations to carry two huge 90 m3 water storage tanks prior to the arrival of the drilling equipment. These were kept topped up by tankers throughout the drilling operations.
Prior to mobilisation, access to the site was upgraded. Despite this, access was far from straightforward for the largest loads. Nevertheless, the 300 Tonne mobile crane off-loaded and positioned the equipment both in and outside the quarry in one working day. The equipment was interconnected over the following two days in readiness for drilling operations.
Boreholes showed that the drill would pass through both the Macduff Slate and Cullen Quartzite Formations. These rocks varied in compressive strength from 120 MPa to 393 MPa, classified as very to extremely strong. This, together with the highly abrasive mineralogy of the rocks, was a major cause of concern to the Consulting Engineers, especially for hole opening operations. The subcontractor proposed, therefore, to alleviate these concerns by drilling a 17½” pilot hole, far larger than had been tried before in the HDD field.
Translation - Spanish Antes que el subcontratista comenzara las operaciones de perforación se bajó e instaló en la capa rocosa un tubo de revestimiento de 20” de diámetro externo. Previa excavación de una zanja de tres metros de ancho y 20 metros de largo, desde el punto de entrada y en dirección hacia el mar.
La misma se profundizaba desde el punto de entrada, permitiendo que el tubo fuese bajado y dispuesto en forma alineada con el eje de la perforación, con un ángulo de entrada de 19°. El subcontratista construyó las bases de concreto para soportar dos grandes tanques de almacenamiento de agua de 90m3 antes de la llegada del equipo de perforación. Durante las operaciones de perforación los tanques fueron reabastecidos por camiones tanque.
Antes de la movilización de los equipos, el acceso a la zona fue reforzado. A pesar de ello el acceso estaba lejos de soportar cargas máximas. One of the main aspects of the waste management plan was the processing of oil cuttings and waste mud. For this operation the company decided to select a water-based mud
made only with non-toxic components. In addition, a state of the art solids/waste mud treatment systemwas implemented, involving the following processes:
• cuttings were dried with a dedicated high power shale shaker, and then transferred by screw conveyor to a covered pit where they were fertilized and later buried
before restoration; and
• waste mud was stored in a lined pit before treatment by a physico-chemical process; after separation, the solids were stored in the cutting pit while the water was discharged.
Other aspects of the waste management system included the burning of paper and cardboard, the burial of kitchen garbage and transfer of other wastes to the logistic base for disposal. Used engine oil was returned to the recovery plant for recycling.

Uno de los principales aspectos del plan de tratamiento de residuos fue el procesamiento de los escombros y el barro de perforación. A tal fin la compañía decidió utilizar un barro de perforación con base acuosa, cuya composición contenía únicamente componentes no tóxicos. Adicionalmente instaló un avanzado sistema de tratamiento de escombros y barros de perforación, que incluyó los siguientes procesos:
• los escombros de perforación se secaron con una zaranda vibratoria de alta potencia y transferidos mediante un transportador helicoidal a una fosa cubierta donde se los fertilizó para ser luego enterrados hasta la etapa de restauración del medio ambiente; y
• el barro de perforación de deshecho se almacenó en una fosa revestida antes de ser sometido a un tratamiento físico-químico; después de su separación los sólidos se almacenaron en la pila de escombros mientras que el agua era desagotada.
Otros aspectos del sistema de tratamiento de residuos fueron: la incineración del papel y cartón, el enterrado de los residuos de la cocina y el traslado de otros residuos a la base logística. El aceite usado de los motores fue enviado a la planta de reciclado.
