Source text - Romanian Pe vremuri (hei, hei, nu chiar pe când cu descălecarea lui Mihai la Alba-Iulia!), exista în Cluj o stradă numită Amurg (notaţi: nu „Amurgului”, Amurg). Întotdeauna mi-a plăcut acest nume de stradă; mi se părea ciudat, aparte, straniu, poetic, „punător pe gânduri”. Numele îmi plăcea, strada nu. Nici nu prea avea ce să-ţi placă. O stradă plină de absenţe. Copleşită de absenţe. Adică, de ajungeai pe-acolo, puteai fi sigur că nu vei întâlni pe nimeni (poate câte o gospodină în capot, care trecea alături, la altă gospodină îmbrăcată în capotul ei, sau, potrivit anotimpului, în combinezon; cam atât). De prin curţi te mai lătra câte un câine care ţinea să se afle în treabă. Culmea (fireşte, depinde din ce sens o luai) strada ducea înspre... amurg. Nici după ce am aflat că pe această stradă a locuit (în gazdă) nevastă-mea, pe când nu era (nevastă-mea), dar era studentă.
Ce, naiba, puteai căuta pe strada asta!?! Ni-mic. Nimic. Nu tu prăvălii, nu tu o crâşmă, cât despre firme, pe-atunci, nici vorbă. („Pe-atunci” = în urmă cu vreo, pardon, 30-40 de ani, adică acum cam 1500 de zile; vă daţi seama? 36.000 de ore! Minute? O mulţime.) Aşadar: ce puteai căuta pe strada asta? Neamuri (nu era cazul meu), gagici (n-am văzut), frumuseţi arhitectonice (nici vorbă), umbra copacilor de pe trotuar (nu erau, nici trotuar nu prea era)... atunci, ce? Ori, în mod obligatoriu (de pildă dacă erai poştaş, miliţian sau executor judecătoresc – iarăşi nu era cazul meu), ori de-a nebun (era cazul meu). Adică, încerc să explic:
Atât de altcumva era strada asta încât de multe ori, de multe ori, m-am dus pe-acolo (şi, zău, aveam cam 1/3 din anii mei de astăzi) doar ca să păşesc dinspre levant spre amurg, sau dinspre amurg spre răsărit. Nu avea nici o importanţă.

Translation - English A long long time ago (well, not quite since Mihai entered stately the citadel of Alba Iulia!) in Cluj, there was a street named Sunset (note, not “Of the Setting Sun”, but plain Sunset). I always liked the name of the street; it seemed somehow odd, peculiar, strange, poetic, “thought-provoking”. I did like the name, though not the street. Well, there wasn't anything to like at all. A street of complete absence, flooded in absence. That is, once you got there, you were sure not to run into anyone (maybe a housewife wrapped in a dressing gown, passing by to a next-door housewife wrapped in her own dressing gown, or, season-depending, wrapped in a cloak; and that would be all). From the courtyards you'd get barked at by solitary mongrels eager to beat the air. Not quite totally surprisingly (but considering the starting point, to be sure) this street took you towards the sunset. Not even after I learnt that my wife once lived in this street (as tenant), back when she was not yet (my wife, that is), but when she was a student.
What on earth could you be looking for in this street? No-thing. Nothing at all. There were no shops, not even a tavern, as for firms, back then, nothing of the kind. (“Back then” = 30-40 years ago, I beg your pardon, that would be some 1,500 days; imagine that! 36,000 hours! In minutes? Scores.) Hence, what could you be looking for in this street? Kins (not me), babes (none), architectural exquisiteness (not a chance), the shade of the trees on the sidewalk (any of the former, and the sidewalk was rather scarce)... what else? Or, if mandatory (for instance if you were postman, policeman or bailiff – again not me), or simply moonstruck (like me). Let me disambiguate:
This street was so uncommon that, quite often, I went by (and, to be honest, back then I was tierce my age today) solely to stroll from dawn towards sunset or from sunset towards sunrise. That did not matter at all.

Source text - English All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Acei vizitatori într-atât de desueţi încât să-şi dorească doar să poposească şi să contemple cu ochiul lor anacronic sunt îmbrânciţi de către pozarii cărora li se pare evident că nimic nu mai are voie să se mişte sau să se intercaleze în cadrul lor cât timp ei îşi execută ceremonialul de focalizare. Dar, din nefericire, nu e aşa. Aparatul de fotografiat e doar graffiti făcut respectabil.
Aparatul de fotografiat e doar un mod de a ne lăsa urma pe tot ceea ce vedem, sub pretextul că imortalizăm Minunile Pământului care, însă, deja sunt imortalizate admirabil de profesionişti şi se găsesc de cumpărat în orice librărie de cartier sau la orice chioşc de ziare. Dar ce folos să-i arătăm matuşii Tanţa de acasă ilustrate cu peisaje Toscane dacă nu suntem şi noi în imagine ca mărturie că am trecut pe acolo?
Nici un plai nu e aievea dacă nu sunt şi eu acolo. Nici un monument nu e real dacă nu se sprijină nevastă-mea de el. Nici o biserică nu e interesantă dacă nu e alături şi faţa mea schimonosită. Prin mijlocirea aparatului de fotografiat îmi asum toate frumuseţile, le iau în stăpânire, le subjug, le naturalizez şi le înfăţişez pe spoiala anostă din salon pentru a demonstra unui public selecţionat dintre amici şi neamuri esenţa materialităţii acestor frumuseţi: aceea că eu le-am văzut, eu am fost acolo, eu le-am fotografiat, şi, deci, ele există.

Source text - English The problem of being awkward with introductions is not, for many, an “unusual situation.” You may find that you are often uncertain about whether to introduce someone using their first name, last name, or both; about whether to use a qualifier (“this is my friend, ______”); even about whether or not it is in fact your responsibility to introduce two people in a given situation. But all of this is small potatoes compared with the seemingly inevitable mingling nightmare of having to introduce someone whose name you have forgotten.
It’s one thing to forget someone’s name if you’ve met them only once or twice, or if you haven’t seen them in a while. But all too often it’s someone whose name you really should know, and who is going to be insulted to find out you don’t. In other words, a faux pas in the making.
This is absolute agony when it happens, and I’ve watched hundreds of minglers try to deal with different ways, ranging from exuberant apology (“Oh GOD, I’m so sorry, JEEZ, wow, I can’t believe I’ve forgotten your name!”) to throwing up their hands and walking away. But there are better ways to deal with this kind of mental slip. Next time you draw a blank while making introductions, try the following ploy:
Force them to introduce themselves. This is the smoothest and most effective way to handle your memory lapse. When it’s done well, no one will ever suspect you. If you have forgotten one person’s name in the group, turn to that person first and smile. Then turn invitingly to a person whose name you do remember and say, “This is Linden Bond,” turning back casually toward the forgotten person. The person whose name you haven’t mentioned yet will automatically (it’s a reflex) say “Nice to meet you, Linden, I’m Sylvia Cooper,” and usually offer a hand to shake.

Mă însoţiseră prietenii la care locuiam, un cuplu tânăr, mixt în mai multe sensuri, căci reunea două rase, două religii şi două arte, dar mai ales două fizionomii extrem de contrastante. Ei îi priveam faţa reflectată în sticla vreunui Delvaux şi părea chiar de acolo, înconjurată natural de femei goale şi blonde aşteptând (pe cine?) într-o gară pustie. Era aidoma lor, cu excepţia părului tăiat violent la ceafă. Şi, fireşte, a hainelor, între care faimoasa cămaşă bărbătească, neagră, în care o văzusem de cele mai multe ori în săptămâna cât stătusem cu ei. Cum îşi găsise românca asta sibiancă algerianul cu care locuia, habar n-am. Legătura mea fusese, fireşte, ea, prin intermediul unei prietene comune, tot muziciană. El era un berber mândru de originea lui, marcată prin tichia de catifea cu ape vişinii şi cu fund de atlaz albastru de care cred că nu se despărţea niciodată. Astfel, era, ca şi ea, haios, nepăsător, cam leneş... Imposibil de spus din ce trăia. Căci mă-ndoiesc că din actorie, cum (nici măcar nu) pretindea: nu cred că Othello – singurul rol în care-l vedeam cât de cât – se juca prea des în acele zile la Paris... Din toată expoziţia mi-a rămas în minte doar o singură pictură. Cred că sunt ţicnit: uneori iubesc câte un tablou atât de tare, încât literalmente îmi vine să dau spargere la muzeu şi să plec cu el. Era „Le soir qui tombe” al lui Magritte: o fereastră spartă, cioburi lungi aşezate sub ea în picioare şi soarele de amurg răsfrânt în ele sub unghiuri diferite...
Translation - English That afternoon in Paris at the Pompidou Centre, I visited a spectacular André Breton exhibition that was merely an excuse for a display of surreal imagery that can only rarely be gathered together under the same roof. My friends, where I stayed, joined me: a young mixed couple in more than one way, as it blended together two races, two religious beliefs, as well as two artistic expressions, but most of all, two extremely contrasting countenances. I watched her face mirrored in the pane of a Delvaux: she seemed part of it, genuinely surrounded by naked blonde women waiting (for whom?) in a forlorn station. She seemed one of their own, excepting the saveage haircut at the back of her neck. And of course, the clothing, with the invariant masculine black shirt that I've seen her wearing most of the time throughout my week with them. How on earth did this Romanian woman from Sibiu meet the Algerian man she was living with, beats me! My relationship to them was she, of course, via a mutual friend, a musician herself. He was of Berber origin and very proud of it, and manifested it by means of a velvet cap in shades of cherry red with blue satin top he never parted from. Thus, he was, just like her, funny, carefree, a bit lazy... It was impossible to tell how did he earn his living. I doubt it was acting - as he would (not quite) claim. I really doubt that Othello - the only part I could match him to - was on often enough those days in Paris... My memory retained only one painting out of the entire exhibition. I think I'm not in the right mind: sometimes I fall in love with a painting so hard that I literally feel like breaking into the museum and take that away. This time it was Magritte's "Le soir qui tombe": a broken window, long vertical fragments of glass beneath and bits of the setting sun lingering in them under various angles...
