Source text - Polish Ma 39 lat. Urodził się w Kobe, ale od już prawie 15 lat mieszka w Polsce. Osiadł w Oświęcimiu – sennym miasteczku na południu kraju, któremu II wojna światowa przyniosła mroczną sławę miejsca zagłady 1,3 miliona ludzi, zamordowanych przez nazistów w tutejszym obozie koncentracyjnym. Nakatani jest jedynym cudzoziemcem–przewodnikiem oprowadzającym turystów po tym przerażającym miejscu. Dziś obóz, przemieniony w muzeum, emanuje ciszą. Starannie utrzymane szutrowe alejki toną w zieleni, a bloki obozowe, w których niegdyś tysiącami tłoczyli się wynędzniali więźniowie, wypełniają tylko nieśmiałe odgłosu kroków zwiedzających. Bez solidnej dawki historii trudno przyjąć do wiadomości, że rozegrała się tutaj największa bodaj tragedia w historii XX–wiecznej Europy. – To miejsce uczy szacunku dla takich wartości jak życie, wolność, demokracja i prawa człowieka – wyjaśnia Nakatani. – Japonia po wojnie otrzymała je w prezencie, Polska i inne kraje postkomunistyczne musiały je sobie wywalczyć.
Translation - English Takeshi Nakatani is 39 years old. He was born in Kobe, but has lived in Poland for almost fifteen years. He decided to settle in Oświęcim [pronounced Oshvenchin] – a small sleepy town in the south of Poland, which became infamous during World War II as the focal point for the Nazi Holocaust. The town witnessed the murder of 1.3 million people in the Auschwitz death and concentration camp. Nakatani is the only foreign guide in this terrifying place. Today the concentration camp is now a museum enveloped in an eerie silence. The carefully maintained gravel walkways are covered in lush greenery; the camp blocks, which once were packed with thousands of starving and dying prisoners are now empty and filled with the occasional embarrassed footfall of passing tourists. Without a healthy dose of history, it is almost impossible to imagine that this place once staged the most horrific human atrocities of 20th century Europe.
“This place teaches you to respect the most basic values of life, freedom, democracy and human rights,” explains Nakatani. “All of these things were given to Japan on a plate after the war. Poland and the other countries of the communist bloc had to fight for them.”

Translation - English “Plumbers, come home!” The headline of one of Poland’s popular newspapers resounds like a clarion call echoing around Poland’s factories and garages. The lack of qualified plumbers, welders, lorry drivers, nurses, even doctors and engineers who have been steadily exported en masse to England, France and Ireland has halted the development of Polish business. Paradoxically, in a country where unemployment hovers around the 18 percent mark, the newspapers are full of advertisements for jobs that nobody wants to apply for. Small- and medium-sized towns are full of unemployed people that no company wishes to employ.

Source text - Polish Dziś w strefie żyje i pracuje kilka tysięcy osób. Część z nich to przesiedleńcy, którzy nielegalnie powrócili do opuszczonych wiosek, resztę stanowi obsługa likwidowanej elektrowni. Według raportów naukowych na terenie strefy silnie skażony pozostał do dziś jedynie obszar o powierzchni niecałego kilometra kwadratowego. Reszta zony właściwie nadaje się do ponownego zamieszkania.
W ostatnich latach w mediach zaczęły pojawiać się doniesienia, że zamknięta strefa w rzeczywistości nie jest wyjałowioną przez promieniowanie pustynią i siedliskiem mutantów, ale stała się rajem dla dzikiej przyrody, w którym bujnie rozwija się wszelkie życie. W zonie licznie występują między innymi żubry, konie Przewalskiego, wilki, zagrożone wymarciem czarne bociany i orły bieliki. Populacja dzików jest 10–15 razy liczniejsza niż poza strefą. „Największa katastrofa w historii energetyki jądrowej okazała się znacznie mniej groźna dla przyrody niż zwykła obecność człowieka” – napisał w ubiegłym roku na łamach magazynu „American Scientist” prof. Robert Baker z Texas Tech University.
Ten amerykański uczony od 1994 r. badał na terenach czarnobylskiej zony wpływ promieniowania na organizmy żywe. Wraz ze współpracownikami jeździł tam aż 15 razy. Początkowo był przekonany, że skażenie promieniotwórcze wywarło bardzo negatywny wpływ na rośliny i zwierzęta. Dlatego w czasie pierwszej wyprawy udał się do tzw. czerwonego lasu, czyli niewielkiego obszaru w pobliżu elektrowni. Jego nazwa pochodzi od koloru sosen obumarłych z powodu bardzo wysokich dawek promieniowania.
Translation - English Today around a few thousand people live and work in the zone. Some of these people have decided to resettle and illegally move back to the abandoned villages in the area, the rest account for workers responsible for servicing the now obsolete nuclear power station. According to scientific reports, there remains a small area in the zone, 1km squared, which is still highly contaminated. The rest of the zone, is therefore fit for resettlement.
In recent years, there have been reports in the media that have contradicted the view that the exclusion zone is a wasteland laid barren by radioactive contamination, home to mutants and the suchlike but that the zone has become a natural paradise in which all forms of wildlife has been free to richly develop and grow. The zone is home to animals like the European bison, Przewalski’s horse, wolves and other endangered species such as the black stork and white eagle. The wild boar population is approximately 10-15 greater than outside the zone. “The greatest catastrophe in the history of nuclear energy has turned out to be less of a threat to the natural environment than the presence of man,” according to Professor Robert Baker of Texas Technical University in “American Scientist”.
From 1994, the America scholar has been researching the effects of radioactive contamination on living organisms in the Chernobyl Zone. Together with his colleagues, he has visited the zone as many as fifteen times. To begin with, he was convinced that the fall-out had an extremely negative effect on the plants and animals in the area. During his first expedition there, he went to the so-called “red forest”, a small area in close vicinity to the power station. It got its name from the colour of the pine trees which had died from high doses of radiation.

Source text - Polish Problematyka ochrony danych osobowych pracownika zaczęła pojawiać się w opracowaniach popularyzatorskich wraz z wejściem w życie ustawy z dnia 29 sierpnia 1997 r. o ochronie danych osobowych . W opracowaniach naukowych rozważania na temat konieczności zapewnienia pracownikom ochrony sfery prywatnej były prowadzone w Polsce znacznie wcześniej. Wystarczy przywołać tu podręczniki profesora Macieja Święcickiego z 1968 r. , by stwierdzić jak dawno i w jak odmiennych warunkach ustrojowych nauka polskiego prawa pracy widziała już ten problem . Jest jednak niewątpliwą zasługą powołanej ustawy i działającego z jej upoważnienia Generalnego Inspektora Ochrony danych Osobowych (GIODO), że problematyka ta została doceniona i jest stale obecna w naszym życiu społecznym i gospodarczym. Stale też pracodawcy borykają się z koniecznością wyznaczenia obszaru dozwolonych informacji o pracownikach, które mogą zbierać i przekazywać innym. Problem staje się coraz trudniejszy w związku z udostępnianiem nowych technik gromadzenia i przetwarzania informacji, z wyposażaniem pracownika w nowoczesne narzędzia pracy, które zdolne są do rejestracji informacji obojętnych dla pracodawcy, jednak pracodawca ten może je pozyskać (np. rejestrator GPS).
Translation - English The issues surrounding the protection of personal data began to appear in popularising studies together with the introduction of the Act on Protection of Personal Data on the 29th August 1997. Scholarly studies deliberating the issue of the need to guarantee employees a level of protection of their private domain were undertaken in Poland a great deal earlier. It is enough to mention the textbooks of Professor Maciej Święcicki from 1968 to see how long ago and in what kind of differing political climate Polish scholarly work on Labour Law took place and how the problem was tackled . However, it is without doubt largely thanks to the above-mentioned Act and the introduction of the Inspector General for the Protection of Personal Data (GIODO), authorised by the Act that this issue is appreciated and constantly under discussion in our social and economic lives. Employers still have to wrestle with the necessity of defining the area and scope of legal information on employees that they can collect, process and pass on to others. This problem is becoming more difficult to cope with due to the fact that employers have access to new technological tools for the collecting and processing of information and employees make use of modern tools that allow the logging of information which is not necessarily important to the employer, although the employer is able to retrieve this data (for example, GPS logging).

Source text - Polish W polskim systemie prawnym funkcjonuje zarówno prawo do informacji jak i prawo do ochrony danych osobowych. Pierwsze z nich wynika wyraźnie z art. 61 Konstytucji RP z dnia 2 kwietnia 1997r. oraz z ustawy z dnia 6 września 2001 r. o dostępie do informacji publicznej (powoływanej dalej jako udip) . Drugie natomiast znajduje swoją podstawę w art. 51 Konstytucji oraz w ustawie z dnia 29 sierpnia 1997 r. o ochronie danych osobowych (powoływanej dalej jako uodo). Pomiędzy tymi dwoma prawami mogą zachodzić różnego typu relacje, może też dochodzić między nimi do pewnych konfliktów. Podobna sytuacja ma miejsce również w innych systemach prawnych, przy czym ustawodawcy przyjmują dla rozwiązywania takich problemów różne rozwiązania, w tym rozwiązania organizacyjne. I tak w niektórych państwach europejskich organy powołane do ochrony danych osobowych wyposażane są również w kompetencje w zakresie ochrony prawa do informacji. Taką regulację przyjęto np. na Węgrzech, gdzie powołany został Parlamentarny Rzecznik Ochrony Danych i Wolności Informacji, czy też w niektórych landach niemieckich. W Berlinie funkcjonuje np. Rzecznik Ochrony Danych i Wolności Informacji, a w Brandenburgii Rzecznik Ochrony Danych i Dostępu do Informacji. Z kolei w innych systemach prawnych funkcje te ulegają rozdzieleniu.
Translation - English The right to information as well as the right for the protection of personal data both function in the Polish legal system. The former is a direct result of Article 61 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland from the 2nd April 1997 as well as the Act on the Access to Public Information of the 6th September 2001 (hereafter AAPI). One can find the basis of the former right in Article 51 of the Constitution as well as in the Act on Protection of Personal Data (hereafter APPD). There are variety of legal relations concerning these rights that overlap, furthermore, there are also a number of legal conflicts that result in their interaction. An analogous situation can be found in the legal systems of other states, although legislators in other countries use different solutions to solve these conflicts including organisational solutions. Some European states have created personal data protection authorities whose job it is also to protect one’s right to access of information. These kinds of regulations have been adopted in, for example, Hungary where a Parliamentary Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information has been created and also in some German Lande. In Berlin there is a Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information and in Brandenburg a Commissioner for Data Protection and Access to Information operates. In turn, in other legal systems these two functions are separated.

Source text - Polish Zagadnieniem, które budzi wiele kontrowersji jest – do niedawna bardzo powszechna - praktyka pozyskiwania danych osobowych za pomocą kopiowania dokumentów tożsamości, w szczególności starych dowodów osobistych, zawierających liczne dodatkowe informacje (m.in. poprzednie, nieaktualne adresy zamieszkania, informacje o zatrudnieniu dane dzieci). Istotne wskazówki dotyczące tej kwestii wskazał Naczelny Sąd Administracyjny (wyrok z dnia 19 grudnia 2001 r., II SA 2869/00, ONSA 2003, Nr 1, poz. 29) stwierdzając, że „gromadzenie danych osobowych, przez wykonanie kopii dokumentu zawierającego te dane jest kwestia techniczną, obojętną dla prawodawcy, reglamentującego w ustawie o ochronie danych osobowych przetwarzanie tego rodzaju danych. Inaczej mówiąc, posługiwanie się taką czy inną techniką utrwalania danych (…) nie przesądza samo przez się o legalności albo nielegalności tego utrwalania (przetwarzania). Dla takich ocen istotne znaczenie mają przede wszystkim: podstawa prawna przetwarzania danych (art. 23 ustawy), rodzaj przetwarzanych danych (art. 27) oraz granice przetwarzania (art. 26 ust. 1 pkt 3). Nie można wobec tego uwzględnić zarzutu, że posługiwanie się techniką kopiowania dokumentu prowadzi do naruszenia wspomnianej zasady adekwatności przetwarzania danych w stosunku do celów, w jakich są przetwarzane.”
Translation - English The issue that is of most concern and controversy, which has been commonplace until very recently, is the practice of retrieving personal data by copying forms of ID, in particular old identity cards that contain a large amount of additional information (for example, former, invalid addresses, employment information or data concerning children). The Supreme Administrative Court in a ruling of the 19th December 2001, II SA 2869/00, ONSA 2003, No. 1, 29 noted significant pointers with regards to this issue claiming that the “collection of personal data through the copying of forms of ID is a technical issue which is immaterial to the employer rationing within the Act on the Protection of Personal Data the processing of this type of data. In other words, the use of this type of technique of data storage… does not in itself determine the legality or illegality of this storage (processing). For this kind of assessment, the following have crucial meaning: the legal foundation for data processing (Article 23 of the Act), the type of data processed (Article 27) as well as the limitations of the processing (Article 26 (1), point 3). In light of this, one cannot respect the charge that using the technique of copying a form of ID is an infringement of the afore-mentioned principle of adequacy of the processing of personal data in relation to the purposes for which it is processed.”

Ma charakter precedensowy. Decyzję w podobnym kształcie wydała rok później Komisja Europejska. Jeśli ją wygramy, będzie to nasz sukces roku.
Translation - English However, when it comes to anti-monopoly cases, there can be no compromises. We cannot agree to regulations that limit our powers to fight monopolies, cartels and the suchlike. Giving businesses a seven-day notice that the UOKiK will be examining their email accounts is not investigatory at all. The interchange case, where twenty banks were together involved in a competition-restricting collusive agreement, will be brought to court on the 12th November. This is a precedent. A similar ruling was given by the European Commission last year. If we win, it will be our greatest success of the year.

Translation - English In the first week of October 2005, 300 citizens of the Russian Federation applied for political asylum in Poland. They were all refugees from Chechnya, a republic in North Caucasus, which has been plunged in war for over ten years. In the ‘90s, Poland had not experienced the problem of refugees on a great scale. In the period 1994-1999, there were a mere 180 applications for refugee status (giving approximately forty a year). At the beginning of 1994 when the western world was celebrating New Year, armed Russian forces were deploying heavy artillery and bombarding the streets of the rebellious republic’s capital. During the First Chechen War, which ended in 1996 with victory for the rebel republic, 100,000 Chechens (mostly civilians) lost their lives at the hands of Russian soldiers.

Source text - Polish Często neurochirurdzy usuwają tylko cześć guza mózgu, bo inaczej uszkodziliby ważne dla życia ośrodki, a pacjent po operacji byłby sparaliżowany, nie mógłby mówić, albo by nie słyszał. Twierdzą, że po tym poznaje się klasę chirurga – wie, kiedy zrezygnować. - Piękne lody chciałoby się zjeść w całości, a tu wolno tylko połowę. Tak samo jest z guzami – trzeba rezygnować, choć to upiornie trudne – zamyśla się Papierz.
Przygotowania do operacji to ciężka praca fizyczna także dla lekarza. Uśpionego przez anestezjologa pacjenta trzeba przenieść z łóżka na stół i ułożyć w odpowiedniej pozycji. Przy operacjach kręgosłupa lędźwiowego chory wygląda, jakby był na czworakach. Ta pozycja nazywa się kolankowo-łokciowa.
Przy operacjach mózgu neurochirurg siada u wezgłowia stołu operacyjnego. Instrumentariuszka staje na lewo od niego, na małym stopniu, żeby lepiej widzieć, co się dzieje.
Translation - English Neurosurgeons are often forced to only partially remove brain tumours due to the threat of permanent damage to vital regions of the brain which might cause paralysis, loss of speech or hearing. They claim that you can tell how good a neurosurgeon is by the fact that he knows when to stop.
“You’d love to eat the whole bowl of ice cream but you are only allowed to eat half. It’s the same with tumours. It’s very difficult but you have to know when to stop,” claims Papierz.
Preparing for an operation is physically demanding for every surgeon. The anaesthetised patient has to be moved from their bed onto the operating table and then into the correct operating position. When operating on the lumbar vertebrae patients look as if they’re on all fours adopting the so-called ‘knees and elbows’ position. When operating on the brain the neurosurgeon sits at the head of the operating table. The operating theatre attendant sits to the left of the surgeon in a raised position to see better.

The Greek word, Metaphysics means, 'that which comes after physics'. It is widely accepted that the word entered the language of philosophy thanks to Aristotle, the Ancient Greek philosopher. The treatises of Aristotle that followed Physics were compiled under the title, Metaphysics (meta simply meaning 'after' in Greek). Therefore metaphysical reflection and discussion concern problems that fall beyond a purely physical scope which might be termed "the first philosophy, the science of the principles of being".
To begin with, before even the term "Metaphysics" appeared, explorations into 'what exists' were strictly considered within the domain of the philosophy of nature i.e. cosmology. This search was parallel to attempts at discovering the 'primary cause' and the basic principle governing all things (known in Greek as arche).

Pod własnymi markami sieci oferują przede wszystkim mleko, wody mineralne, papierowe ręczniki, chipsy oraz lody. Rzadko - jedzenie dla dzieci, psów i kotów. - To segmenty, gdzie konsument przywiązuję największa wagę do jakości wyrobów w trosce o swoich najbliższych - tłumaczy Aleksander Krzyżowski z Polskiego Stowarzyszenia Wytwórców Produktów Markowych "ProMarka".
Marki własne przyciągają klientów przede wszystkim niską ceną. Dla porównania: półtoralitrowa woda mineralna pod etykietą hipermarketu kosztuje 49 gr. Za stojącą obok na półce Kroplę Beskidu, produkowaną przez Coca-Colę, trzeba zapłacić 1,83 zł. Waniliowe lody można kupić w cenie 1,99 zł za litr, podobne, ale z logo Zielonej Budki, są kilkakrotnie droższe. Papierowe ręczniki Velvetu to wydatek 2,85 zł, podczas gdy w sieci Leader Price na ręczniki wydamy niewiele ponad złotówkę. Za tak niską cenę nie można spodziewać się fajerwerków - produkty mają mało atrakcyjne opakowanie, często też ich jakość pozostawia wiele do życzenia. Potwierdzają to badania Inspekcji Handlowej, która niedawno wzięła pod lupę tanią żywność w sieciach sklepowych: Biedronka, Champion, Elea, Leader Price, Real, Lidl, Tesco, Ahold. Okazało się, że jedna czwarta wyrobów pod prywatną etykietą miała zaniżoną jakość w stosunku do informacji na opakowaniu. Najgorzej wypadły produkty mleczne - co trzeci miał wady - oraz mięsne - tu problemy z jakością miało grubo ponad 20 proc. wyrobów. Np. w wędzonkach stwierdzono "smak kwaskowy, występowanie skupisk galarety, gumowatą konsystencję, wyciek soku". Z kolei w serach: "miąższ kruchy, mazisty, smak i zapach lekko gorzki, jałowy, odbiegający od typowego".
Translation - English Own brands which are called private labels by some expert are taking hold of the market with lightning speed. Even though the full range of these products appeared on our shelves only a few years ago, now every eighth product s an own brand, according to data from analysts from Gfk Polonia.
Supermarket chains sell above all milk, mineral water, paper towels, crisps and ice cream under their own private brands. More rarely do we see baby food or even food for cats or dogs. “These are areas of the market where the consumer most carefully looks at the quality of the brand identifies in concern for his or her loved ones,” explains Aleksander Krzyżowski of the Polish Association of Branded Products – “ProMarka”.
Own brands lure customers primarily with their low prices. As an example: a half litre bottle of mineral water sold by a hypermarket own brand costs PLN0.49. For the bottle of Kropla Beskidu standing next to it on the market shelf, which is produced by Coca-Cola you will have to pay PLN1.83. Own brand vanilla ice cream costs PLN1.99 per litre whereas if it has the logo of Zielona Budka on it you will pay a few times more. Velvet paper towels cost PLN2.84 whereas in Leader Price stores you will have to pay a little over PLN1. For such low prices, there is no use expecting the extraordinary – the products have unattractive packaging and their quality leave a lot to be desired. This is supported by research by the Trade Inspectorate, which recently took a good look at cheap food in the supermarket and discount chains of: Biedronka, Champion, Elea, Leader Price, Real, Lidl, Tesco and Ahold. They found that a quarter of own brand products were of decidedly lower quality than was advertised on the label. Milk products faired the worst – a third were deemed ‘defective’. Meat products were also well below standard with 20 percent having ‘problems’. For example, smoked meats had a, “acidic taste, rubbery texture, too much jelly and often were too watery”. The cheeses were, “too crumbly, chalky; the smell and taste was bitter and not up to standard”.

I began my multicultural work in Japan where I taught English. I later moved to Łódź, Poland and worked at Łódź University where I specialised in corpus linguistics and translation and helped set up Poland's first ever corpus project - The PELCRA project. After working in Łódź for several years teaching corpus linguistics, translation and interpreting I moved to the capital city Warsaw. There I trained translators and interpreters at the University of Social Psychology - SWPS and the University of Warsaw. I have also worked as an editor and translator for Polish News Bulletin - Legal Supplement as well as Newsweek Polska. I worked as a voice-over for the European Film Academy and worked in journalism, for Polish National Radio - 'Czwórka', where I had my own weekend morning show.
