Police managed to thwart a fourth attack after car bombs exploded near the Iranian, Egyptian, German, and Syrian embassies.
By Mohammed al-Qaisi in Baghdad -- 6/4/10
Three suicide attacks killed at least 37 Iraqis and wounded more than 190 others on Sunday (April 4th). The attacks occurred near the embassies of Iran, Egypt, Germany, and Syria in central Baghdad.
Iraqi security forces prevented a fourth bombing with the arrest of a driver who planned to blow himself up in his car near al-Karrada.
The first bombing occurred when a suicide bomber blew up his car opposite the Egyptian embassy in al-Mansour area, according to Baghdad Operations Command spokesperson Gen. Qassim Atta. The attack took place early in the morning when citizens usually gather at the markets near the embassy.
A few minutes later, another suicide bomber blew up his car near the German and Syrian embassies, also in al-Mansour.
The two bombings in al-Mansour killed seven people and injured 25 others, including embassy security guards and Iraqi civilians.
While Iraqi security forces were attending to the first two attacks, a third suicide bomber targeting the Iranian embassy rocked the al-Salhiyah area in central Baghdad. According to Atta, that blast was the most violent, killing 30 Iraqis and wounding 166 others, including children and women who were at a government bank waiting to receive salaries and government loans.
"The terrorists succeeded in carrying out their attacks today, but they will not succeed in achieving their goals to stop the democratic process and impede the building of the security forces in Iraq," Atta said in an interview with Mawtani. "We have lost some loved ones today, but we have not lost our will to continue life and build the Iraq that its sons dream of."
The attack targeting the Egyptian embassy caused serious damage to the embassy building and nearby structures, but none of the staff inside was hurt, said Iraqi Army Capt. Abd Ali, who was near the blast.
"The security forces are verifying the brands of the cars used in the attacks and their plate numbers in order to start pursuing the terrorists," Ali added, blaming al-Qaeda for the attacks that hit the capital.
Lt. Col. Jassim Abbas of Baghdad emergency police said the blast that targeted the Iranian embassy killed two embassy security guards and some civilians. It also caused major damage to the embassy building.
Following the attacks, many citizens accused al-Qaeda of trying to thwart Iraq's political progress by targeting the foreign embassies in Baghdad.
"Today's blasts are a message from al-Qaeda and the rest of killers to the effect that they are worried about the progress made by Iraqis in the past few days," said Ihab Waleed, 54. "After the success of election, the embassies of many countries around the world started restoring their political representation in Baghdad to the level of ambassadors. The security situation was moving towards stabilization to a large extent, but they are trying to disrupt the situation by targeting important sites."
"They will certainly fail," Waleed added. "We expect other attacks, but we are more determined and patient to bear the remaining part of their threats."
Ismail Allawi, 44, a resident of al-Mansour neighborhood said the attacks are "part of a series of desperate operations to intimidate Iraqis and make them wave the white flag," he added. "However, they are deluded because we will reject their presence."

Translation - Persian (Farsi)
