Useful? I hope not because I haven’t touched alcohol for over 30 years (for medical reasons)...

No - I have proof Dec 23, 2018

Years ago, when I was working in-house for an international organization, I started a translation in the morning, had a glass of wine at lunch, and finished it in the afternoon. The next day I saw that the reviewer had left my morning part untouched, whereas the part I had done in the afternoon was peppered with her corrections in red. It looked like a Christmas tree! From that day on, I swore to never drink and work at the same time.

... the task? Maybe if I wanted to translate rap lyrics?

No seriously, I don't drink alcohol for health reasons, and I'm not going to evaluate any other substances for their linguistic value either.

It would instead be a disaster for someone (me) who doesn't drink any alcohol at all.

What is the relevance... Dec 23, 2018

And bourbon is even better. Dec 23, 2018

As is scotch. Although I know some prefer brandy. Nothing wrong with that either.

I don't drink alcohol, nor smoke for that matter.

on the language pair you are working with. If you don't know the language, like, at all, then maybe - but I would rather go for a shot of very bad whiskey, and then you can take a walk in the night, smoke half a package of Marlboro and try approaching random shady-looking groups of young men and ask them if they have a cell-phone you can use. Of course there is a chance they will actually give you a cell-phone - I have personally tried it in Istambul once, and they really did, and I felt stupid,... See more

Of course there is a chance they will actually give you a cell-phone - I have personally tried it in Istambul once, and they really did, and I felt stupid, because I did not have anyone I could call!

And of course you shouldn't forget about listening to k.k. null's masterpiece called 'star breaker' while doing all the above - and, like, try to sing along!

PS: What is the purpose of these polls? I do feel like I've just given a legitimate answer.

Very occasionally, I have a glass of wine in the (late) afternoon if I am working on something creative (slogan, marketing, other loose types of translation).
It can take my mind into other directions when I am (at risk of getting) stuck.
The next morning, with a fresh pair of eyes and a rested brain, I decide whether or not to use the wine-assisted part of the translation.

This is a strange question, but it leads me to another question: is there ANY particular food or drink you consider helpful when doing translation work? (As an open question, this would be difficult to put into a poll)

It all depends on the time and place, the type of translation, and the translator. Some people may find that wine makes them dozy, so it's probably not a good idea for them.

Regarding the raison d'être of this poll - some people appear to be unaware that now is a time of year known for "good cheer" in many parts of the world, where it is a euphemism for getting tipsy - and I suspect this may be the motivation for this poll. In other words, simply an attempt to inject some cheer into what can otherwise be a po-faced slog the rest of the year.

Happy holidays, everybody
