Then came papyri and quills, pens, notebooks, typewriters, personal computers and text editors, CAT tools and finally MT, and the development of technology has always been there to make the translation process easier, but never eliminated the need for professional human translators. Machine translation is here and it will be here for a very long time. The growing demand for MT also means a growing demand for MT post-editing services. While machines do and will help us translate larger amounts of text for shorter periods, the translated materials do and will require a human touch – editing by a professional translator. Perhaps one day we will all be flying around the universe in personal spaceships with Babel fish stuck in our ears and communicating with the fellow terrestrials and extraterrestrials telepathically and we will no longer need translators and language teachers. But that day is still very, very distant." https://ciklopea.com/translation/translation-technology/machine-translation-artificial-intelligence-and-a-human-touch/ ▲ Collapse
We had this question recently. Artificial intelligence is useful for scanning the many millions of pages that intelligence agencies need to follow. If they want details, they still need to get a translation. If anything, it generates a larger market for translation.

By the time AI takes control and eliminates the need for human translators, I will be long gone anyway. Furthermore, certain fields will always require a human being in order to produce good translations, or at least a very good and an even more patient post-editor. | | | Ricki Farn Germany Local time: 08:24 English to German
All I have to do is learn a new skill: that of politely laughing in the face of anyone who asks me to lower my word rate in exchange for a machine translation. I think that's called "CPD" (continuing professional development). | | | As long as the real thing keeps it under control... | Dec 30, 2018 |
Artificial Intelligence drives me nuts now and then. But when it comes to the point, what really worries me is old-fashioned human failure to apply common sense. Humans are always trying to find short cuts, and AI looks like an easy solution. Computers are good at some things, but artificial intelligence is like artificial anything else. It may be useful at times, but you have to know when only the real thing will do! Happy New Year (And I'm not a robot ... See more Artificial Intelligence drives me nuts now and then. Well, I think it will mean more work for us. Internet will never be a totally reliable source for the perfect mastering of a language so if a real A.I ever exists I am pretty sure she'll be happy to work with us to be perfect and have perfect command of a ONE language and then another. Who could she talk to about language apart interpreters, translators, linguists and historians. I am having a bit of fun. But some will always need and want quality. ▲ Collapse | | | Mario Freitas Brazil Local time: 03:24 Member (2014) English to Portuguese + ...
A.I. or M.T. does not affect the market I work in or the group of translators I belong to. People in this market do not use AI or MT for professional purposes. They all know what's the use of these resources, which is not professional translation, whatsoever. However, there is a sector of the market that uses it and should be worried, because they will lose their jobs. Anyway, I wouldn't advise my children to become translators anymore. However, there is a sector of the market that uses it and should be worried, because they will lose their jobs. Anyway, I wouldn't advise my children to become translators anymore. There will always be human translators, but the number of sectors that need translations and don't care about quality is increasing. For Chinese products or for movie subtitles, for example, MT is more than sufficient, as bad quality will not affect their sales. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Does the application of Artificial Intelligence to translation worry you?
