What is important is that I feel good about my environment. I'm sat here all day like some houseplant, every detail around me has to be "me" because I spend so much time with it. In my case, "me" is tidy and full of intense colours and shiny items. YMMV.

The tidiness of my environment is very important to me. I need order and calm around me and everything in its place when I work. A messy environment affects my mood and mental state: my brain functions much better on a tidy and clean environment.

ideally should agree May 10, 2019

I said "somewhat agree", but at the moment my work area leaves a lot to be desired....

I could tidy it up a bit if only people would let me have a couple of days without deadlines.
But then there is also the temptation to catch up on the ironing or other chores.

in practice, but agree in theory.
I am unsure as to why a Swiss-army knife and a mesuring tape are on my desk.

That's a gender thing. I have a Swiss army knife and a measuring tape in my handbag, and men don't generally have handbags. QED.

Sorry, couldn't resist

Order in chaos May 10, 2019

The company where my husband worked once called in a consultant, who explained the joys of tidiness and order to the employees.
No one escaped, even the senior management. Then the person went round talking to people and tidying up, and spent quite a long time in my husband's office. (He was the CFO.)

No one escaped, even the senior management. Then the person went round talking to people and tidying up, and spent quite a long time in my husband's office. (He was the CFO.)

He was grumpy and came home late for a fortnight before he could find his things and work at normal speed again. It upset his routine, delayed his work, and made him forget what he was supposed to be doing. Several others along the corridor had the same experience. They could find their things if they knew where to look, but not if everything was hidden in drawers or arranged in neat, even piles.

I have my style guides and reference books behind me on the shelf, and know where to look for the ones I use. (The others are on different shelves, for crosswords and other purposes.) The magnifying glass, mat for the coffee cup, my calculator and all my pens and pencils, scissors, nail files … etc. are placed around me - and I can find them with my eyes shut.

I keep a lot of things in my 'cage' that are not entirely work related - but I know where they are, and woe betide anyone who moves them!

The place may not look tidy or rational, but it is FUNCTIONAL, and that is what counts!

I recently told a friend of mine that all of the above have taken my place over to such an extent that it now seems like I have more of it than I do furniture!

Anyway, none of it seems to have any effect on my production, thank goodness.

Disagree May 10, 2019

When I'm at work, I'm totally oblivious of what is around me - I don't notice the mess on my desk unless I am looking for a pen or a dictionary and can't find it immediately.

Tidiness is relatively unimportant to me. Just this morning I started a large project by shoving a stack of assorted stuff to the other side of the desk to make room for the printed source text. Eventually, I'll sort things out and put most of the junk away, but it's not disturbing me or affecting my work.

In fact, I think I'll get up right after I post this and go strike my gong. I'll also take my back scratcher back to my bedroom where it belongs.

My back scratcher lives right here on my desk!

kinda agree May 10, 2019

Agree, but only because I habitually leave myself to get distracted by things around me when not feeling like working. Better to close off of all the possibility so that I give up trying to find something to focus on apart from work

I'd love to, but it's not possible May 13, 2019

Unfortunately, I have no time to take care of tidiness. I'd love to have a tify environment, but there is no one in the house to take care of cleaing up and organization. We got used to the mess, most of the time, and once or twice a week, we stop and put things in their place. But it's very hard to get to the point where we could call it "tidy".
