If DJs are “the new rock stars” (Forbes, 2012), and if Emma Ramadan is correct—there did not exist, until now (2015), a genderless love story written in English—how can we trust in our vision as a supposedly contemporary, world-changing literary public after discovering that Anne Garréta’s debut novel was published thirty years ago?
Sphinx (1986) is a love story that is simultaneously hijacked and elevated by its own language. Originally guided by a Jesuit priest cloaked as Dante’s Virgil, the novel’s nameless and genderless narrator descends from the aristocratic literati into Paris’s crepuscular underworld, arriving at the gates of the discothèque Apocryphe to become DJ royale and a devotee of the beautiful, also genderless, A*** (in whose tragic character we may find our Beatrice). The Apocryphe is the abyssal incubator of their folie à deux. To say that Sphinx is “ahead of its time” sounds stale, but stale-sounding things are often true. (In 2002, Garréta won France’s prestigious Prix Médicis, which is awarded each year to an author whose “fame does not yet match their talent.”)
Garréta’s method and style allow her to pillage the French language generously, often playfully, and she makes it clear that society, self-prescriptive by nature, is begging to see itself outside of binary gender distinctions. Ramadan’s translation has also given us the first full-length work by a female member of the Oulipo. The experimental French literary group is renowned for its exclusions—whole novels don’t include the letter “e,” extended texts employ only one vowel, poetry is written to be sliced up and reshuffled. It must be remembered, however, that Sphinx’s publication preceded Garréta’s invitation to join the Oulipo by more than a decade. Now, what does it mean to read the first English translation of such a novel, which teases out all our assumptions about identity, love, desire, relationships, with almost sacramental intensity?
We can, at least, trust in the simple counsel of the novel’s translator, who (after Garréta) made our reading possible in the first place: “If our pre-conceived notions about all of these things are defied by this text, what does that say about our pre-conceived notions? Reading Sphinx is one way to think about these questions, to question our ways of thinking.” Whether in spite of or due to its preciousness, Sphinx serves to remind us that it is us who are still woefully behind the times.

MB: First, I want to enquire about the context that instigated an English translation of Garréta’s novel now. Sphinx was published in 1986—when Garréta was only 23 years old. What made the impetus for this translation—nearly thirty years later—so urgent?
ER: Well, when I first found out about Sphinx, I heard about it in the context of Daniel Levin Becker. He wrote a book about Oulipians, and he briefly mentions Sphinx, and I assumed that it had already been translated. And then I went looking for the translation and I couldn’t find it, and when I realised it hadn’t been translated yet it just sort of seemed wild to me, you know, that no one had tried to translate this book. It was pretty wild to me that, despite the past, however many years going by since this book was published, it still feels very relevant, maybe more so now than then, because people are more interested in talking about gender and the way gender influences our lives, and influences our identities, the ways it kind of constricts us, and I feel now more so than in 1984—at least in the States.
More people are now talking about ways to subvert those constrictions of gender and the ways gender influences us but how we don’t necessarily need to be influenced by gender. That kind of conversation feels really relevant, with the timing of Sphinx coming out, in 2015, and its popularity, and people responding so well to it. People are interested in talking about these things, and I feel like it is the beginning of a pushing of these discussions into the realm of literature, or conversely, having these conversations because they are coming out of art and literature.
I wonder—if this book had been translated back in 1986, would it have even had the same response? It is crazy to think how forward-thinking Garréta was, or how behind we all are, perhaps, maybe in our conversations. But yes, to me, it made sense for the book to come out now.
MB: And since you did the majority of the translation in Paris, and Paris is like a character in the novel—at least a large part of the psychogeography of the novel is Paris—did the environment in which you physically translated the novel have any special influences on the translation? In contributing to your way of thinking about it, during the process?
ER: Definitely. I think, not only being able to have access to Garréta, and talk to her, and get to know her, that obviously helped, and speaking the language obviously helped, but Paris itself being there was important.
There is a whole scene in the novel where the narrator is talking about Café de Flore, and how much she hates it and all of these horrible people that go there, and I think it is different now because it is only tourists now who go there. But being able to go to that space, and sit there, and being able to be in the cafes that she was in, when she wrote the book—being able to inhabit the space of Paris in general.
When I was translating the novel, I was working with Dan Gunn, who is a professor at The American University of Paris, where I was studying for my Masters in Cultural Translation. He kept saying to me, “You’ve got to go out to all these nightclubs. You’ve got to go find a place that is like the Apocryphe and really experience that.” But I am not a nightclub kind of person at all! It was so funny to me, because I went out a few times, but I don’t think I went to any places that would have really mirrored the Apocryphe. I definitely feel like there are all these scenes where she talks about the lights in the streets, views over the city, or when she is talking about walking down certain streets and she’s singing songs, and I feel like that kind of spirit of what she was talking about was definitely a little clearer in my mind thanks to actually being in Paris.
MB: How is Sphinx an exemplar of the Oulipian tradition? Referring back to Daniel Levin Becker’s introduction he says;
‘The first time I read Sphinx, Anne Garréta’s first novel, I knew that it was Oulipian, but not how…Above and beyond constraint, that particular blend of readerly effort and figure-ground reversal is one of the best things an Oulipian novel can hope to achieve, and in that sense Sphinx is consummately Oulipian.”
Where does the novel’s classification as Oulipian situate in terms of the group’s literary history, particularly when you’re taking into consideration that it was published fourteen years before Garréta was actually an official member of the group?
ER: When I first met with Garréta, she was very hesitant to ascribe the word—the label of “Oulipian” to this book. I actually met her for the first time in the company of Will Evans [founder of Deep Vellum Publishing], and he was discussing how he was going to market the book, why he was excited about it, and how it was the first novel by a female Oulipian to be translated. Garréta was wary of putting a lot of emphasis on that. She was very much like: “This book is radical and lesbian and feminist and queer before it is Oulipian.’” So it’s a little strange for all the focus to be on the Oulipian aspect, especially because she wasn’t in the group yet when she wrote it.
But Sphinx definitely does follow in that lineage. There’s a very obvious constraint. It is simultaneously very high literature, a very high register of language, very serious literature, but it is also very playful the way that it distorts language and plays language against itself to make this point. I think she was definitely influenced by the Oulipo. Garréta was reading Oulipian works when she was growing up, so it’s not so far-fetched to say that of course it was influenced by that tradition.
But in relation to the history of other writings of the group, what is really important for me as a distinction between Sphinx and other Oulipian works is its constraint. Most Oulipian works start out of a constraint and become an exploration of a linguistic feat for the sake of seeing where it leads, and what can come out of that constraint, as opposed to Sphinx, which was so clearly about a certain kind of point. And then figuring that out, “How can I make that point in my translation?”, and then making that point happen out of a constraint. So the novel is way more political, I would say, then other Oulipian works, and I think the political aspect of this book is more important to Garréta than the linguistic aspect or the aspect of Oulipian constraint.
Her constraint is more incidental, as a way of hammering home the point that gender shouldn’t be an important factor in our identities and our lives and our relationships. It’s certainly not fair to say that there are no other Oulipian works that use constraint politically as a way of saying something deeper. But I don’t think any of the other Oulipian works really go as far as this book does.
MB: The note of linguistic constraints brings me to my next question, which is the exact nature of the constraint that she uses. French contains grammatical gender, while English contains semantic gender. Could you get more specific for our readers, who may not be familiar with the rules and the finer characteristics of French? What did this mean in terms of the difficult decisions you had to make during the translation process? In your translator’s note, you mentioned maintaining Garréta’s subversion of the way gender works in the French language, and in human relationships, specifically in terms of how French verbs are gendered.
ER: I can start by explaining the ways that gender came up in French, in the French text, that had to be avoided, such as adjectives or verbs that would reveal the gender of either of the two main characters. In French, if you use the passé composé, there are certain verbs that agree with the gender of the subject—like all the être [in English, “to be”] verbs, which are the most basic verbs; ‘to go,’ or, ‘to be,’ or whenever those agree with gender.
So, when writing the novel, Garréta had to avoid certain verbs. Also, every adjective agrees with the subject, so Garréta could never say something like, “A*** was…” She can never actually say “A*** is black,” for example, because if you say directly A*** is black, you would say, “A*** est noire” or “noir,” adding an “e” at the end if A*** is a woman, or leaving out the “e” if A*** is a man.
MB: On page 36, your translation reads, “That was precisely the question troubling them. Black skin white skin: our looks were against us.”
ER: Right. So there are all these little phrases where Garréta can’t just come out, and say, “A*** was black and I was white.” So, there are definitely small ways in my translation that you can see, “Huh, why would she have said it so indirectly?” and it is all coming out of this. Garréta couldn’t use this construction in French, and even though I could have used that construction in English, I’m translating the French, so I have to stick with what was written as opposed to making it more direct or more simple.
It’s funny, because if you were to write a genderless novel in English from the first person, it doesn’t actually seem like it would be all that difficult, because the first-person narrator would have a really hard time revealing his or her gender just by speaking in the first person. We don’t have adjectives that agree, we don’t have verbs that agree, we don’t have that same kind of gender agreement structure.
It gets really difficult because I’m translating a French text that avoids gender, and the way that French works, all the places where Garréta could kind of exploit the French language and get away with not using any gender, like by constantly talking about certain body parts. There are certain passages where it’s just the narrator looking at different body parts of A*** while A*** is sleeping or while A*** is dancing. Those are exactly the spots in English where you have to use gender. You can’t say like ‘an arm’, or ‘a leg’ it’s always ‘his’ arm or ‘her’ leg, and it starts to sound really awkward.
It becomes this strange thing where it shouldn’t be that hard to write a genderless novel in English in the first person, but it’s really hard to translate one from French. Because the whole thing is written in this way, where in French you can get away with it, but in English these are exactly the places where we need gender. So it was a lot of tweaking to figure out, “OK, how can I have an entire page section of just describing body parts without it sounding like there are just, like, limbs detached on the floor?”
MB: I have a sub-question to that, focusing on the passé simple. Sphinx’s narrator is stylised as a member of the intellectual, perhaps aristocratic, elite. In your translator note, you say, “I broke Garréta’s code by creating a new one, because writing with a constraint does not add up to being constrained by your writing.” The French passé simple is integral to the narrator’s identity. How did you re-code the text so that the tone registered the same way in English?
I also wanted to give an example. One of my favourite examples of the narrator’s interior is when he or she visits A***’s family in New York, and he or she experiences African-American culture and hospitality for the first time. After eating sweet potatoes, the narrator says, “Is there anything more vertiginous than gustative reminiscence?”
ER: That’s sort of homage to Proust. There’s a lot of that kind of language with a really high register. In English, we don’t have the passé simple, which is obviously, just the literary tense in French. So, the only thing you can really do in English to make it really clear which register someone is speaking in. That someone is really intellectual, and clearly thinks very much of their intelligence, so in my translation it was necessary to elevate the register of the language as much as possible without it becoming too disassociated.
Also, it was necessary to use phrases or references that would be used by someone who considers him- or herself to be an intellectual. At one point in my translation, I inserted a Shakespeare reference because it was talking about “the world is a stage,” or something to that effect. But that was me trying to put a little literary reference in there for English readers, because there are so many references to things in the French that are specific French literary references that I kept in English. They are still there in the English, but English readers might not pick up on them as much as French readers would. There are references to Flaubert and to Proust and to a whole smattering of French authors. There are references in there that I didn’t get immediately, and I studied French literature.
So, I wanted there to be some little references like that in English to get that across, that this narrator is very intellectual and wants to show off. I used elevated vocabulary where I could, and I think that was where I struggled the most, which was writing in that kind of register, because I don’t write that way myself. And I don’t read a lot of books that are written that way either, so my biggest challenge was kind of wrapping my head around how to make that work without it sounding forced or awkward. One of my strategies for this was reading books that are written in a very high register, like Alan Hollinghurst, but that don’t obviously sound awkward. That was the biggest challenge for me.
MB: To my mind, the narrator’s lack of gender creates striking juxtapositions with other necessarily gendered characters in the novel, especially in relation to the narrator’s mentor, a Spanish Jesuit priest, who leads him or her into Paris’ late-night underworld, but also in relation to the strange characters he or she meets in that world. As the narrator’s celebrity as a DJ grows, he or she assumes an uncanny role, like a confidante or comrade, to these characters.
On page 31, the narrator says: ‘There was the tedious and nonsensical conversations of tipsy society men; the chatter vaguely coloured with the philosophy and aestheticism of the washed-up who cling to a completely superficial and secondhand culture as a fiery temper clings to a menopausal bourgeoisie; and, in passing, the narrow and noxious conversations of old bachelors following the antics of their protégés out of the corner of their eyes—I was subject to it all.”
This passage ebbs and flows, like many others, with gender that is very much named and signified. Are these characters merely accessories in underscoring the narrator’s genderless identity, or is Garréta making a larger comment outside of the love story in focus, to which possibly the narrator is a vehicle?
ER: I don’t know the real answer to this, or what Garréta would say to this, but my reading is two parts. When people first read this book in France, in 1986, there were many reviews that didn’t notice that the two main characters were genderless. I think that was the proof of the success of the book in a way, that Garréta was able to write this without people noticing because it shouldn’t really matter. The constraint is not what this book is about. It’s about a love story. And the point is that gender shouldn’t matter. So if you’re constantly noticing and trying to figure out what the genders are, you have sort of missed the point.
To have these characters in a world that resembles the real world, and it doesn’t become this universe where nobody has gender, and you’re sort of wondering, like, “Huh, is this science fiction?” or, “What’s going on?” I think it would become a lot more obvious and draw a lot more attention to the constraint if the other characters were also genderless. Not that I don’t think Garréta couldn’t have risen to the challenge. I think that to put the two main characters in a real setting, and to have them in a world that everyone could relate to, and then they exist in this world, it shouldn’t really matter that they don’t have genders. It’s not really what the focus should be on. It is their love story, and I think it just grounds them in a real setting.
There’s another passage where Garréta talks about this, when the narrator and A*** go to Germany, and the narrator talks about going into nightclubs, gay or straight, male or female: “I transgressed against all the boundaries. I went into all these places.” The important point is that there is this sort of reminder that we do live in this world of exclusions, and we do live in a world with boundaries. Also, these characters are able to exist outside of it, or without the influence of it on their relationship. Because, in this story, you necessarily can’t read into any of the problems A*** or the narrator have as being kind of gender-power relations, or for example, “A*** was being denied his or her voice because A*** is clearly a woman, because she doesn’t get to speak at all.” In the book, you can’t make sweeping statements like that, so all the problems that are present in their relationship have to be part of something else. They have to be separate from gender.
I think that’s kind of the point, that we live in a world where there are just so many distinctions between people, and we are constantly drawing distinctions, but gender doesn’t have to be one of them. Perhaps Garréta’s point is reminding us what we’re facing everyday boundaries between us. There are always walls between us, but gender shouldn’t have to be something that has so much control over our lives. I think there needs to be that contrast, or the simultaneous reminder, that these boundaries do exist, and that gender does have an influence in our lives, but that it doesn’t need to. In this way, these two characters are the embodiment of escaping it.
MB: I admit, and perhaps this makes me a bad reader, but when I was reading Sphinx a second time, I became a little bit of a snooping detective. I wanted to see if there were any indicators, or maybe cheeky clues, about either A***’s or the narrator’s gender. I think what struck me the most was when the narrator meets A***’s mother for the first time. I just expect that a mother would have some sort of attitude toward her daughter’s or son’s lover in a more gendered-protective way.
ER: It’s funny you say that because to me there actually is a line in that passage that is, that could have been read as a clue. It gave me a lot of pause when I was translating.
There’s a line in that scene, right before the narrator meets A***’s parents or A***’s mom, where the narrator says, “I was worried about what she would think of our relationship,” or something to that effect. I was so hyperaware—I don’t want there to be any indication of gender, and I was really worried about people construing that line as an indication that they were both of the same sex. Because to me, it was like, “Why would you worry about what your significant other’s mother thinks of your relationship?”
But then again, that was just me projecting onto the book. But that was the line in the scene for me, “Oh no, is this a clue?” And then I talked to people who had read the book, and they also didn’t construe that but pointed out the major indictors, like one character is white and one of is black, there’s a big age gap, etc. So, again, clearly it wasn’t a clue for you, clearly you were looking for clues and that line in particular didn’t jump out at you. Clearly I was reading too much into it.
MB: That kind of brings me to this question. Were you able to maintain Garréta’s androgyny in your own mind while you were translating the novel? Again, perhaps this makes me a bad reader, but I’m really curious to know whether Garréta, even in her own mind, was able to do so.
ER: Actually, I specifically asked her this question. It was a really foolish thing to do, because immediately she was like, “What are you talking about? These characters don’t have genders that I’m secretly withholding, these characters were constructed in my mind without gender.”
So, there’s no secret code to crack. There’s no little hints sprinkled throughout of what Garréta really had in mind. It’s not the point of this constraint being in this book, it’s that they are characters without gender. They exist in the real world, and clearly they do have genders, but they were constructed in Garréta’s mind as genderless characters or as characters written without gender markers. She said to me that there is no secret—that’s how they were written. For me, it is so hard. I had so many moments when I would be talking about this book, and even during my thesis dissertation, when I would slip up and use a gender pronoun in describing these characters.
It was really hard for me to keep the androgyny in my mind, because they do feel like such real characters, and you want to assign them genders to better picture them. You’re reading a novel, and you want to relate to these characters, and they remind you of people you know, and they remind you of situations you’ve been in, and they are written so well that they come to life for you and therefore you need to assign them gender. So as I was translating, they definitely had genders in my mind. I think I was also influenced by the fact that I was talking to Garréta during the translation process, and I know that she is a DJ herself.
MB: Garréta sounds like a fascinating woman.
ER: Yes, she’s great. She’s a multifaceted, amazing woman. I knew a little bit of autobiographical information about her that made it really hard for me not to associate the character of this book with her. And knowing that she’s a lesbian, it started to make me associate A*** as being a woman. But most of the people I’ve talked to haven’t assumed that they were both women.
MB: Is that reaction mostly from English-language readers of your translation?
ER: Yes. I was surprised. I did an event in New York, around the time when the book came out in June, at Community Bookstore. Someone during the middle of the event raised their hand and made a comment about how they were so sure the narrator was a man, because it was a very male voice. And I was like, “What is that? What does that mean?’ What is a male voice? What are you even talking about?” I’ve had a lot of people say to me, “Oh, I definitely felt the narrator was a man.” Whether they thought A*** was a woman or a man has varied. To answer your question, no, I could not maintain the androgyny in my own head.

Se i DJ sono “le nuove rockstar” (Forbes, 2012), e se Emma Ramadan è nel giusto - nella lingua inglese non esisteva, fino ad oggi (2015), una storia d’amore priva di colorazione di genere - cosa facciamo della nostra percezione, in quanto pubblico letterario, che vogliamo contemporanea ed addirittura rivoluzionaria, una volta scoperto che la pubblicazione del primo romanzo di Anne Garréta risale a trent’anni fa?
Sfinge (1986) è una storia d’amore contemporaneamente stravolta ed elevata dal suo stesso linguaggio.
In principio guidato da un Gesuita nelle vesti del Virgilio di Dante, l’io narrante di questo romanzo, senza nome e senza sesso, si cala dall’aristocratico mondo della classe colta a quello del crepuscolare sottobosco parigino, per trasformarsi, varcata la soglia della discoteca Apocryphe, in DJ Supremo, nonché in adoratore del(la) splendido(a), ed altrettanto androgino A*** (nella cui figura tragica potremmo vedere la nostra Beatrice). L’Apocryphe è l’incubatoio abissale della loro folie à deux . Dire che Sfinge “precorre i tempi” sembrerebbe banale, ma ciò che suona banale è spesso anche vero. (Nel 2002 Garréta ha vinto il prestigioso Premio Médicis, conferito ogni anno ad un autore “la cui fama non è ancora all’altezza del suo talento.”)

Leggere Sfinge è, in sé, un modo porci queste domande, di interrogarci sul nostro modo di pensare.” Che sia malgrado o grazie alla sua ricercatezza, Sfinge è lì a ricordarci che siamo noi quelli ancora deplorevolmente indietro sui tempi.

MB: Innanzitutto, vorrei sapere qualcosa del contesto che ha portato alla traduzione inglese di Sfinge. Sfinge è stato pubblicato nel 1986 - al tempo Garréta aveva solo 23 anni. Quale è stata la molla che ha determinato l’urgenza di questa traduzione proprio ora, a quasi trent’anni di distanza?
ER: Beh, La prima volta che sono venuta a conoscenza di Sfinge, è stato in relazione a Daniel Levin Becker. Lui aveva scritto un libro a proposito dell‘ Oulipo, in cui menzionava brevemente Sfinge, ed io avevo dato per scontato che fosse stato già tradotto. Quando ne ho cercato la traduzione e mi sono resa conto che non ce n’era ancora una, mi è sembrato incredibile che nessuno avesse ancora provato a tradurlo. Questo tipo di discussione ha grande pertinenza con la tempistica della pubblicazione di Sfinge, nel 2015, la sua popolarità e con il fatto che il pubblico sia stato tanto ricettivo a riguardo. La gente è interessata a parlare di questi argomenti, ed io ho la sensazione che questi discorsi comincino ad entrare nell’ambito della letteratura, o, forse addirittura l’inverso, che la loro attualità sia dovuta al fatto che l’arte e la letteratura se ne occupano.
Mi chiedo - se questo libro fosse stato tradotto nel 1986, avrebbe avuto il seguito che ha oggi? È sorprendente quanto Garréta sia stata innovativa, o, forse, quanto indietro siamo noi, nei nostri discorsi. Ma io credo che abbia senso che il libro sia stato tradotto proprio ora.
MB: E, dal momento che hai tradotto la maggior parte del testo a Parigi, e Parigi è un personaggio del romanzo - quantomeno, una gran parte della psicogeografia del romanzo è Parigi - l’ambiente in cui hai lavorato ha avuto una particolare influenza sulla traduzione stessa? Ha apportato qualcosa al tuo modo di concepirla, mentre la facevi?
ER: Decisamente. Penso che lo sia stato, non solo perché ho avuto occasione di accedere a Garréta e di parlare con lei e conoscerla, che, certo, è stato utile, come utile è stato il parlare la lingua, ma il fatto stesso di essere a Parigi è stato importante.
In tutta una scena del romanzo il narratore parla del Café de Flore, e di quanto lo odi e di quanto odi i suoi orribili avventori, e io credo oggi sia diverso, perché oggi il locale è frequentato solo da turisti. Ma è stato importante poterci andare, sedere lì, poter essere nei caffè dove lei andava al tempo in cui scriveva il libro - poter abitare i luoghi di Parigi in generale.
Al tempo in cui traducevo il romanzo, lavoravo con Dan Gunn, docente all’ American University of Paris, dove studiavo per i miei master in Cultural Translation. E lui continuava a ripetermi, “devi andare in tutti quei nightclubs. Devi cercare un posto che sia simile all’Apocryphe e fare la tua propria esperienza.” Ma io non sono affatto tipo da locale notturno! È stato davvero bizzarro, perché ci sono andata a volte, ma non credo di essere stata in nessun posto che somigliasse realmente all’Apocryphe. Ho la sensazione netta che tutti quegli episodi in cui lei parla delle strade illuminate, le vedute della città, o, quando lei parla di quando percorreva certe strade, e cantava, che l’atmosfera di ciò che raccontava, mi fossero decisamente più chiari proprio perché mi trovavo fisicamente a Parigi.
MB: In quale modo Sfinge è esemplare della tradizione dell’Oulipo? Tornando all’introduzione di Daniel Levin Becker, lui dice:
“La prima volta che ho letto Sfinge, il romanzo d’esordio di Anne Garréta, sapevo che era Oulipiano, ma non sapevo in quale modo lo fosse...Aldilà del vincolo linguistico, quella particolare miscela di sforzo richiesto al lettore ed inversione figura/sfondo, è tra i migliori risultati che un romanzo Oulipiano possa ottenere, e, in quel senso, Sfinge è sapientemente Oulipiano.
Dove si situa il romanzo, in quanto Oulipiano, in termini della storia letteraria del gruppo, in particolare se si considera che è stato pubblicato quattordici anni prima che Garréta ne diventasse ufficialmente membro?
ER: La prima volta che ho incontrato Garréta, lei esitava ad attribuire al romanzo questo termine - ad etichettarlo come “Oulipiano”. In realtà l’ho incontrata per la prima volta in compagnia di Will Evans ( fondatore della Deep Vellum Publishing), e lui parlava di come avrebbe pubblicizzato il libro, del perché ne fosse entusiasta, e del fatto che fosse il primo libro scritto da un membro femminile dell’Oulipo ad essere tradotto. Garréta era più cauta nell’enfatizzare questo aspetto della cosa. Ciò che lei diceva era: ”Questo libro è radicale, lesbico, femminista e queer prima ancora di essere Oulipiano.” Dunque è un po’ strano che tutta l’attenzione vada all’aspetto Oulipiano, specialmente perché lei non era ancora entrata a far parte del gruppo quando l’ha scritto.
Certo, Sfinge fa sicuramente parte di quel filone. C’è un vincolo linguistico evidente. Si tratta di letteratura alta, molto seria, di un registro molto ricercato, ma è, allo stesso tempo, scherzoso il modo che ha l’autrice di giocare con la lingua e piegarla per sollevare quella particolare questione. Io penso sia stata sicuramente influenzata dall’Oulipo. Garréta leggeva la letteratura dell’Oulipo nei suoi anni formativi, quindi ritengo naturale che questa tradizione abbia avuto un’ascendenza su di lei.
Ma, in rapporto alla storia di altri testi dell’Oulipo, ciò che distingue veramente Sfinge da altri lavori prodotti dal gruppo, è il suo vincolo linguistico. Molti dei lavori dell’Oulipo partono da un vincolo specifico e diventano esplorazione di un esercizio linguistico, al puro scopo di capire dove questo porti, cosa possa venire fuori da questo vincolo, al contrario di Sfinge, il cui fine in questo senso era chiaro dal principio. E, di conseguenza, mi chiedevo come renderlo, “Come posso restituire questa problematica nella mia traduzione?”, ed evidenziarlo aldilà del vincolo. Così il romanzo è molto più politico, direi, che altri lavori dell’Oulipo, e credo che l’aspetto politico sia molto più importante per Garréta che quello linguistico o quello del vincolo Oulipiano.
Il vincolo linguistico in questo romanzo è più fortuito, un modo di ribattere che il genere non è necessariamente un fattore importante della nostra identità, o della nostra vita, o delle nostre relazioni. Sarebbe certamente ingiusto dire che non ci siano altri lavori dell’Oulipo che usino il vincolo linguistico in modo politico per trasmettere qualcosa dal significato più profondo. Ma non credo che nessuno degli altri lavori Oulipiani vada altrettanto a fondo di questo testo in tal senso.
MB: Questa osservazione a proposito del vincolo linguistico mi porta alla domanda successiva, che riguarda la natura esatta del vincolo usato da Garréta. In francese i generi sono grammaticali, in inglese, semantici. Potresti essere più specifica per i nostri lettori, che potrebbero non avere familiarità con le regole e le sfumature del francese? Cosa ha implicato questo in termini delle decisioni difficili che hai dovuto prendere nel tradurre? Nella tua nota, hai menzionato quella di mantenere il sovvertimento operato da Garréta nella maniera in cui è trattato il genere nella lingua francese, e nei rapporti umani, specificatamente nei termini in cui i verbi vengono generati in francese.
ER: Potrei cominciare con lo spiegare che il modo in cui il genere è rivelato in francese doveva essere evitato nel testo, per esempio aggettivi o verbi che avrebbero svelato il genere dell’uno o l’altro dei protagonisti. In francese, se si usa il passé composé, alcuni verbi andranno accordati col soggetto al maschile o al femminile - come il verbo essere, che è un verbo di base; “andare”, o “essere”, o, almeno, in tutti i casi in cui questi dovessero essere accordati.
Dunque, nello scrivere il romanzo, Garréta doveva evitare certi verbi. Inoltre, tutti gli aggettivi si accordano col soggetto, quindi Garréta non poteva in alcun caso scrivere “A*** era...” Non poteva scrivere “A*** è nero/a, per esempio, perché scriverlo in maniera diretta fornisce, in francese, l’indicazione precisa del genere.
MB: A pagina 36 tu traduci : “Questa era precisamente la questione che li turbava: Pelle nera, pelle bianca: il nostro aspetto era contro di noi.”
ER: Esatto, ci sono tutte queste piccole frasi in cui Garréta non può semplicemente dire, A*** era nero/a ed io bianco/a. Di conseguenza uso delle costruzioni, nella mia traduzione, di cui si potrebbe dire: “Ma perché l’ha scritto in maniera tanto indiretta?” e parte tutta da questo: Garréta non poteva usare questa costruzione in francese, e anche qualora io avessi potuto usarla in inglese, traducevo dal francese, quindi dovevo restare fedele al testo originale, invece che scriverlo in maniera più diretta o più semplice.
È curioso, perché scrivere in inglese un romanzo alla prima persona che non dia indicazioni sull’identità di genere, non sembrerebbe particolarmente complicato; per il narratore la difficoltà starebbe nel rivelare il proprio sesso, proprio perché parlerebbe in prima persona. I nostri aggettivi non si accordano, né i nostri verbi, noi non abbiamo la stessa struttura di accordo di genere.
Diventa veramente difficile perché io traduco un testo dal francese in cui la colorazione di genere viene evitata, e, per come funziona il francese, anche tutte le parti in cui Garréta poteva sfruttare le peculiarità della lingua, e non indicare il genere, come il parlare continuamente di alcune parti del corpo. Ci sono alcuni passaggi in cui il narratore semplicemente osserva alcune parti del corpo di A*** mentre A*** dorme o A*** balla. Esattamente quelli in cui in inglese si usa il genere. Non si può dire, mettiamo, “un braccio”, o “una gamba”, è sempre “il suo braccio” o “la sua gamba” [‘his’ arm or ‘her’ leg], e potrebbe suonare veramente male.
Ci si trova in questa situazione un po’ particolare, nel senso che pur non essendo, probabilmente, troppo complicato scrivere in inglese un romanzo privo di indicazione di genere alla prima persona, tradurne uno dal francese è davvero laborioso. Perché è tutto scritto in questo modo, ed è esattamente dove in francese non ce n’è necessità, che in inglese il genere deve essere indicato. Quindi ho dovuto fare tutto un lavoro di limatura per risolvere delle possibili incongruenze, del tipo, “OK, come posso tradurre tutto un brano in cui siano descritte delle parti del corpo senza che queste sembrino semplicemente membra sparpagliate sul pavimento?”
MB: Avrei una domanda accessoria a questo riguardo, parlando del passé simple. Il narratore di Sfinge è raffigurato come appartenente all’élite intellettuale, forse anche aristocratica. Nella tua nota del traduttore scrivi: ”Ho infranto il codice di Garréta e ne ho creato un altro, perché scrivere usando una limitazione linguistica non significa essere limitati da ciò che si scrive.” Il passé simple francese è intrinseco all’identità del narratore. Come hai ricodificato il testo in modo da renderne il colore in inglese?
Ti faccio un esempio. Uno dei miei esempi preferiti del monologo interiore del narratore è quello in cui lui o lei fa visita alla famiglia di A*** a New York, e viene a contatto per la prima volta con la cultura e l’ospitalità afro-americane. Dopo aver assaggiato le patate dolci, il narratore dice, “C’è nulla di più vertiginoso delle reminiscenze gustative?”
ER: Quello è un po’ un omaggio a Proust. Lo stile di questo romanzo ha spesso un registro molto formale. In inglese, non abbiamo il passé simple, che è, ovviamente, esattamente il tempo letterario in francese. Quindi, il solo modo per renderlo in inglese è chiarire quale registro il personaggio stia usando. Che questo personaggio sia un vero intellettuale, e che abbia evidentemente un’opinione molto alta della sua intelligenza, quindi ho dovuto tradurre nel registro più alto possibile, facendo in modo che il testo che ne sarebbe risultato non si distaccasse troppo dall’originale.
Inoltre, ho dovuto usare frasi o riferimenti che si presume userebbe qualcuno che si considerasse un o una intellettuale. Ad un certo punto della mia traduzione, ho inserito un riferimento a Shakespeare perché si parlava del “il mondo è un palcoscenico”, o qualcosa di simile. Ma quella ero io che cercavo di inserire qualche piccolo riferimento letterario per il lettore anglofono, perché ci sono così tanti riferimenti al francese che sono specificatamente riferimenti letterari francesi, e che ho tradotto fedelmente in inglese. Sono ancora lì nella traduzione inglese, ma il lettore inglese potrebbe non coglierli bene quanto lo farebbe quello francese. Ci sono riferimenti a Flaubert e a tutta una serie di autori francesi. Ci sono riferimenti che io stessa non ho afferrato immediatamente, ed io ho studiato letteratura francese.
Quindi volevo che ci fossero dei piccoli riferimenti del genere in inglese, perché si capisse che il narratore è un vero intellettuale, e che è pretenzioso. Ho usato un registro molto formale dove ho potuto, e penso quella sia stata la mia maggior difficoltà, scrivere in quel particolare registro, perché non è il modo in cui scrivo abitualmente. Né leggo molti libri che siano scritti in quello stile, perciò la sfida per me è stato capire come far funzionare il testo senza farlo sembrare forzato o grossolano. Una delle mie strategie è stata leggere dei libri scritti in uno stile formale, come Alan Hollinghurst, ma che non suonassero, ovviamente, forzati. Questo è stato il mio più grande problema.
MB: A mio parere, il fatto che il genere del narratore non sia specificato crea delle somiglianze significative tra lui ed altri personaggi del romanzo, il cui sesso è necessariamente noto, soprattutto in rapporto al mentore del narratore stesso, un prete gesuita spagnolo, che lo/la guida attraverso il milieu nottambulo parigino, ma anche in rapporto agli strani personaggi che lui o lei incontra in questo milieu. Mentre la sua celebrità di DJ cresce, lui o lei comincia ad assumere il sorprendente ruolo di confidente o compagno di questi personaggi.
A pagina 31 il narratore dice: “C’erano le noiose e insensate conversazioni con uomini di mondo alticci; le chiacchiere vagamente tinte di filosofia ed estetica dei falliti arroccati su una cultura completamente superficiale e di seconda mano, come un temperamento fiero si arrocca su una bourgeoisie in menopausa; e, incidentalmente, le conversazioni limitate e velenose di vecchi scapoli intenti a spiare di sottecchi le buffonate dei loro protégés - ho subìto tutto.”
I flussi e riflussi di questo passaggio, come molti altri, sono pregni di indicazioni di genere, abbondantemente menzionati ed esplicitati. Questi personaggi sono puramente accessori nel sottolineare la mancanza di identità di genere nel narratore, oppure Garréta fa un’osservazione più ampia della quale il narratore si fa portatore, aldilà della storia d’amore punto centrale del testo?
ER: Non so quale sia la vera risposta, o cosa risponderebbe Garréta, ma io la intendo in due modi. La prima volta che il pubblico francese ha letto il libro, nel 1986, in molte recensioni non si notava il fatto che il genere dei due protagonisti non fosse specificato: Io credo che questa sia stata in sé prova del successo del testo, in un certo senso, il fatto che Garréta sia stata in grado di scriverlo senza che il pubblico notasse questo particolare, precisamente perché questo non dovrebbe avere importanza. Il vincolo non è l’argomento principale del romanzo. L’argomento principale del romanzo è una storia d’amore. E il punto è che il genere non dovrebbe avere importanza. Dunque, chi legge cercando continuamente di capire quale sia il sesso dei protagonisti, potrebbe non aver veramente capito il nocciolo della questione.
Io penso che il collocare questi personaggi in un mondo che assomigli al mondo reale, che non diventi un universo in cui nessuno ha un genere, del quale tu ti chiedi qualcosa del tipo “Ehi, ma è fantascienza?” oppure, “Cosa succede?” diventerebbe molto più banale e l’attenzione sarebbe ancora più incentrata sul vincolo linguistico, se gli altri personaggi fossero altrettanto privi di marchi di genere. Non che pensi che Garréta non sarebbe stata all’altezza della sfida. Penso che inserire i due protagonisti in un contesto reale, in un mondo in cui chiunque possa riconoscersi, e dove questi protagonisti effettivamente esistono, la questione del genere non dovrebbe avere alcuna importanza. Non è la cosa fondamentale. È la loro storia d’amore, sullo sfondo di un contesto reale.
C’è un altro brano in cui Garréta parla di questo, quando il narratore ed A*** vanno in Germania, ed il narratore dice di aver frequentato i nightclubs, etero o omosessuali, per uomini o donne: “Oltrepassai tutti i confini. Andai in tutti quei posti.” L’importante è che ci sia questa specie di promemoria che ci ricorda che viviamo in un mondo di esclusioni, in un mondo che ha dei confini.
Inoltre, questi personaggi sono in grado di esistere al di fuori di questo mondo, o , comunque senza che la loro relazione debba subirne l’influenza. Questo perché, in questa storia, non è evidentemente possibile trattare i problemi di A*** o del narratore in termini di rapporti di potere tra i sessi; per esempio, non si può supporre che A*** venga privato di una sua voce, perché donna, e venga di conseguenza messa nell’impossibilità di esprimersi. In questo libro non è possibile fare delle affermazioni tanto radicali, quindi i problemi di coppia dei protagonisti devono necessariamente scaturire da qualcos’altro. Non possono derivare dal genere.
Credo sia questo più o meno il punto, il fatto che viviamo in un mondo che pullula di differenze, e che noi facciamo costantemente delle distinzioni, ma che il genere non debba essere una di queste. Forse Garréta mira a ricordarci che viviamo in una società piena di limitazioni. Che erigiamo continuamente dei muri tra noi, ma che il genere sia qualcosa che non debba avere tanto controllo su di noi. Io penso che questi contrasti siano necessari, o che dobbiamo sapere e ricordarci che questi confini esistono, e che il genere influenzi effettivamente la nostra vita, ma che non è fondamentale che sia così. Questi due personaggi incarnano una possibilità di fuga da questa convenzione.
MB: Lo ammetto, e questo fa forse di me una lettrice superficiale, ma, mentre leggevo Sfinge per la seconda volta, mi sono comportata un po’ da detective. Volevo capire se ci fosse la minima indicazione, o, magari, persino qualche sfacciato indizio, riguardo il genere di A*** o del narratore. Credo che ciò che mi abbia più colpito sia l’episodio in cui il narratore incontra la madre di A*** per la prima volta. In genere mi aspetto che l’atteggiamento di una madre verso l’amante di un figlio o una figlia differisca in qualche modo in base al genere di quest’ultimo.
ER: È singolare che tu dica questo, perché c’è effettivamente una riga in quel brano che potrebbe essere intesa come un indizio. Mi ha bloccata a lungo durante la traduzione.
C’è una riga in quell’episodio, appena prima che il narratore incontri i genitori o la madre di A***, in cui dice, “Mi preoccupavo di cosa lei avrebbe pensato della nostra relazione.”, o qualcosa di simile, che mi ha messo in uno stato di ipervigilanza - Non volevo assolutamente che ci fossero indicazioni sul genere, o che i lettori ne potessero desumere che i protagonisti fossero entrambi dello stesso sesso. Ho pensato, “Perché si preoccupa di ciò che la madre della persona che ama pensa della loro relazione?”
Ma in quel caso, proiettavo semplicemente la mia forma mentale sul romanzo. Eppure quella riga mi disturbava, “Oh no, è possibile che sia un indizio?”. Poi ne ho parlato con altri che lo avevano letto, che non ci avevano visto un’ indicazione particolare, al contrario, si soffermavano sui particolari conosciuti, del tipo: un personaggio è bianco, l’altro nero, c’é una grande differenza di età, ecc. Quindi no, chiaramente non c’era alcun indizio, semplicemente io ne stavo cercando uno, ma quella riga in particolare non aveva alcun significato specifico. Avevo sovra-interpretato.
MB: Questo mi apre la strada per un’altra domanda. Ti è stato possibile continuare a mantenere nella tua mente l’androginia voluta da Garréta per i suoi protagonisti, mentre traducevi? Di nuovo, questo potrebbe essere un atteggiamento superficiale, ma sono davvero curiosa di sapere se Garréta stessa sia riuscita a farlo.
ER: Veramente le ho proprio posto questa domanda. Molto stupido da parte mia, perché la sua reazione immediata è stata del tipo, “Ma di che parli? Questi non sono personaggi di cui io ho nascosto il sesso, li ho concepiti privi di identità di genere.”
Quindi non c’è alcun codice segreto da decifrare, né sottili suggerimenti disseminati qua e là ad indicare cosa Garréta avesse veramente in testa. Non è il punto del vincolo di questo testo, il punto è che si tratta di personaggi privi di genere. Esistono nel mondo reale, e, chiaramente hanno un sesso, ma Garréta li ha costruiti come privi di genere o ha comunque evitato di fornire indicazioni di genere. Lei mi ha detto che non c’è alcun segreto - questo è il modo in cui li ha rappresentati. Per me è molto difficile. Ci sono stati tanti di quei momenti in cui avrei voluto parlare di questo romanzo, e, anche durante la mia tesi, facevo fatica e di tanto in tanto usavo un pronome personale per descrivere questi personaggi.
È stato complicato per me tenere sempre presente questa androginia, perché sono così realistici, che tu vorresti assegnare loro un genere per rappresentarteli in maniera più precisa. Vorresti leggere un romanzo, e provare una certa empatia nei loro confronti, magari ti ricordano qualcuno che conosci, o di una situazione in cui ti sei trovata, e sono raffigurati talmente bene da sembrare quasi vivi, così tu senti il bisogno di assegnare loro un genere. Perciò, mentre traducevo, gliene avevo decisamente assegnato uno, nella mia testa. Penso sia dovuto anche al fatto che parlavo con Garréta mentre portavo avanti la traduzione, e so che lei stessa è una DJ.
MB: Garréta sembra essere una donna affascinante.
ER: Sì, è fantastica. Una donna sorprendente e dalle molte sfaccettature. Ero a conoscenza di una piccola parte della sua biografia che ha reso difficile per me il distinguere l’io narrante del romanzo da lei. E, sapendo che lei è lesbica, ho cominciato a pensare ad A*** come ad una donna. Ma la maggior parte delle persone con cui ho parlato non hanno dato per scontato che entrambi i protagonisti fossero di sesso femminile.
MB: Questa è stata la reazione della maggior parte dei lettori anglofoni che hanno letto la tua traduzione?
ER: Sì. Ne sono stata sorpresa. In giugno, ho avuto un incontro con i lettori a New York al Community Bookstore, all’incirca nel periodo in cui usciva il libro. Nel bel mezzo dell’incontro, una persona ha alzato una mano, ed ha fatto un commento su come fosse sicura che l’io narrante fosse di sesso maschile, perché sembrava una voce estremamente virile. E io, “In che senso? Cosa significa? Cos’è una “voce virile”? Di cosa parli?” In molti mi hanno detto, “Oh, ho avuto la sensazione precisa che il narratore fosse un uomo.” Le opinioni riguardo il sesso di A*** erano meno unanimi. Comunque, per rispondere alla tua domanda, no, non sono riuscita a preservare l’androginia dei personaggi nella mia mente.
