Source text - English The Treetap® product
The Treetop product was derived from a traditional handicraft product called saco encauchado, bags made of fabric rendered waterproof by rubberizing, which were traditionally used by rubber tappers for carrying latex and personal belongings. In 1992, EcoMercado, a business specializing in ecological products from the Amazon, purchased 1,500 sheets of this rubberized fabric from Amazonian rubber tappers and used them to make nags and briefcases which were showcased and sold to an enthusiastic reception at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Brazil in June 1992. Following two years of research and development by Couro Vegetal, the rubberizing process was perfected in 1994, giving rise to the production of Treetap and its use in the manufacture of variety of artisanal handicrafts.
This process is an example of successful combination of scientific expertise and traditional knowledge, and it helped to refine a customary method of rubber processing while adding value to the end product. For example, early rubberized products would become sticky with oxidation. With a USD 1,000,000 loan from the Brazilian Development Bank (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social – BNDES) in 1994, Couro Vegetal da Amazônia was able to invest in production technology and infrastructure that helped to overcome this defect, creating a rubberized fabric that met quality standards for international consumer markets.
After signing cooperative agreements with its three producer associations (Associação de Produtores de Artesanato e Seringa, Associação dos Seringueiros Kaxinawá do Rio Jordão, and Associação dos Seringueiros e Agricultores da Reserva Extrativista do Alto Juruá), Couro Vegetal da Amazônia merged with Amazon Life, a Brazilian eco-friendly fashion brand, in 1998. This merger resulted in Treetap products being marketed through a store in Rio de Janeiro, and the successful creation of the internationally-recognized Treetap brand.
Ultimately, the success of Couro Vegetal da Amazônia was short-lived. In 2008, the company was forced to close when it found itself unable to repay its BNDES loan. In 2004, the bank began the process of executing the USD 1,000,000 debt in 2004, and although the company found some international support, it was unable to raise the necessary finance. This outcome reflects the challenges faced by small runner tapping communities in attempting to compete with industrial rubber producers on price, while bearing the high costs of transporting goods from rural Amazonia to urban markets. High costs, along with the sometimes variable quality of the goods produced, ultimately made the business financially unsustainable. Nevertheless, through its lasting effects on public policy and the difference it made in the lives of the communities it served, this enterprise can be considered an important chapter in the story of rubber tapping in Brazil.

O produto Treetap foi derivado de um produto de artesanato tradicional chamado saco encauchado, que são sacos feitos de tecido processado com emborrachamento impermeável, tradicionalmente utilizados pelos seringueiros para transportar látex e objetos pessoais. Em 1992, a EcoMercado, uma empresa especializada em produtos ecológicos da Amazônia, comprou 1.500 folhas deste tecido emborrachado de seringueiros e usou-as para fazer bolsas e pastas, que foram exibidos e vendidos a um público entusiasmado presente na Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Meio Ambiente e Desenvolvimento, realizada no Brasil em junho de 1992. Em 1994, depois de dois anos da pesquisa e desenvolvimento feitos pelo projeto da Couro Vegetal, o processo de emborrachamento foi aperfeiçoado dando origem à produção de Treetap e à sua utilização na fabricação de uma grande variedade de produtos artesanais.
Este processo é um exemplo bem sucedido de uma combinação de conhecimentos científicos e práticas tradicionais, e que ajudou no aperfeiçoamento do método costumeiro de processamento de borracha agregando valor ao produto final. Por exemplo, os primeiros produtos de borracha tornavam- se pegajosos com a oxidação. Em 1994, com um empréstimo de USD 1.000.000 do Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social – BNDES, a Couro Vegetal da Amazônia foi capaz de investir em tecnologia de produção e infraestrutura, que contribuiu para superar esta falha, criando um tecido emborrachado que cumpria as normas de qualidade exigidas pelos mercados consumidores internacionais.
Após a assinatura de acordos de cooperação com três associações de produtores (Associação de Produtores de Artesanato e Seringa, Associação dos Seringueiros Kaxinawá do Rio Jordão e Associação dos Seringueiros e Agricultores da Reserva Extrativista do Alto Juruá), a Couro Vegetal da Amazônia fundiu-se com a Amazon Life, uma marca de moda brasileira amiga do ambiente. Esta fusão resultou na comercialização dos produtos Treetap numa loja no Rio de Janeiro e na criação bem sucedida da marca Treetap, reconhecida internacionalmente.
Em última análise, o sucesso da Couro Vegetal da Amazônia foi de curta duração. Em 2008, a empresa foi obrigada a fechar, uma vez que não tinha capacidade para reembolsar o empréstimo ao BNDES. Em 2004, o banco iniciou o processo de execução da dívida de USD 1.000.000 e, apesar da empresa ter tido apoio internacional, não foi capaz de juntar o financiamento necessário. Este resultado reflete os desafios enfrentados pelas pequenas comunidades seringueiras na tentativa de competir com os preços dos produtores industriais de borracha, tendo, ao mesmo tempo, que suportar os altos custos de transporte de mercadorias da Amazônia rural aos mercados urbanos. Os custos elevados, juntamente com a qualidade por vezes variável dos bens produzidos, por fim fizeram com que o negócio se tornasse financeiramente insustentável. No entanto, através dos efeitos duradouros sobre as políticas públicas e da diferença que fez na vida das comunidades, esta iniciativa pode ser considerada como um capítulo importante na história da extração da borracha no Brasil.
