Source text - English There are two things you need to know about LA Noire. The first is that it is quite possibly one of the richest, most engaging narrative videogame experiences ever created. Rockstar games have traditionally rich and excellently-told stories, and this game, by Sydney's Team Bondi, is no exception. It raises the bar so high it seems unlikely any of this year's remaining releases will come even close.
The only thing keeping me from polishing up my "Game of the Year" stamp for LA Noire, however, is the second thing you need to know about it: The gameplay will frequently piss you right the fuck off. Setting aside the usual complaints with a sandbox game like LA Noire (driving is hard, controlling the camera is impossible, I don't know where to go ... wah, wah, wah), the added extras that come packaged along with LA Noire's attempt to recreate the art of sleuthing are hit-and-miss, and create the only real stumbles for this otherwise excellent game.
You will play as Cole Phelps, a former U.S. Marine returned home from the war in the Pacific, who has taken up his second career as a police officer. The game follows Phelps chronologically through his career as he makes Detective and gets assigned to a variety of investigative desks. Bookended by flashbacks of his experiences fighting the Japanese during WWII on Okinawa and sideways glimpses at the tales of a few of his fellow returning soldiers, Phelps' career narrative covers a lot of ground, and through his eyes you will experience the seamier side of post-war Los Angeles, rendered in typically loving and exacting detail by Team Bondi and Rockstar.
The game drips post-war era style, right down to the peculiar language of the streets, the treatment of women and minorities, jazz, lounge singers, big-fendered cars and the curious mix of ultra-civility and grit that made Los Angeles in the 1940s such a unique spectacle. Based vaguely on hard-boiled detective stories and film noir, LA Noire borrows heavily from both while telling a tale that feels at the same time fresh and new. And in spite of the preponderance of cinematics, the game is rarely boring. Hands-on gameplay and storytelling are woven together so nearly seamlessly that each seems to carry just enough of its own weight to make the combined whole feel like something better than either an interactive movie or an action game.
The gameplay breaks down into three rough categories: action driving and shooting, investigation and interrogation. The action driving and shooting will be immediately familiar to anyone who has played a Rockstar game or almost any other sandbox. The big difference here is in the cars. There are nearly a hundred of them and each is a faithful recreation or approximation of vehicles that were actually on the road, including such rare specimens as the Tucker Torpedo.
Any car is drivable and slamming along down the freeway-less Los Angeles streets, side-swiping trolley cars and obliterating newspaper stands is as much fun as you would expect. Additionally, since you are, in fact, a bona fide police officer, there is nothing stopping you from switching on the siren of one of the many official police vehicles and blazing a path down the middle of the roadway as good citizens dutifully pull to the side. Getting behind the wheel of a post-war-era American-made tank-steel, rear wheel cruiser, hitting the wailer and blazing down the middle lane of a two lane road, blowing through red lights, holding the pedal down and pulling an emergency-brake-fishtail-hairpin turn is about as much fun as you can have in a game. I recommend doing it as much as you can.
Investigation mainly involves combing crime scenes for clues and then using those as leads for further investigation or in interrogations (more on those in a sec). Clue-finding is relatively straightforward and in the era well before CSI and DNA, you're welcome to grab and hold everything you find and walk right through the blood trails. Nobody cares. Without the burden of having to be scientific (fingerprints and blood typing were still new in this era), what's left is pure gumshoeing, walking the beat, inspecting cigarette butts and following the trail of clues wherever it leads. It's surprisingly fun, if tedious in the late game arson cases.
Also tedious: interrogation. This is one of the areas where the game falls down, and it's a shame, too, because almost all of the pieces are there for a stellar game mechanic. Where it fails is where multiple-choice dialogue trees usually fail: Three static response options are not enough variety to encompass the types of communications real humans have with real humans. The admittedly excellent facial capture technology certainly helps bridge the gap between what the on-screen characters are saying (and how they are saying it) and what a player's mind expects to see when attempting to decipher visual clues, but your options for responding to those clues are limited and the method in which your character will act based on your commands is misleading and confusing.
In LA Noire, you interrogate suspects using a list of questions created based on the progress of your investigation thus far. Any clues you've found or witnesses you may have spoken with will generate further questions, and individual pieces of evidence can be used to prove that someone is lying to you.
After you ask a question, you will get a response, at which point you can either respond that you believe the suspect, you doubt their answer or you think they are outright lying. The face tech is so perfect you will occasionally recognize one of the voice actors, not by their voice, but by their face, which is stunning to see in a videogame. The facial depictions are so true-to-life, that it does genuinely seem as if a real person is talking to you. Unfortunately, learning how to "read" a suspect's face will only get you so far. The trouble begins when you try to gauge ahead of time how Phelps will act and what he will say based on each choice. Often he will seem to be adlibbing, either being way too aggressive or not nearly enough. Worse, there are no takebacks. If you flub an interrogation you could miss critical clues and even jail the wrong guy. To redo an individual investigation you have to start the entire investigation all over again, and considering most are hours long, that's a tough call to have to make.
It gets even stickier when accusing someone of lying. They will demand you prove your accusation, at which point you can select a single piece of evidence from your list of clues. Unfortunately it's often a guessing game to match the intent of your spoken question to the written description of a given clue. More often than not, I found that I just couldn't figure out what the game was going for, even after multiple replays. A certain level of difficulty is certainly welcome, especially when it seems that all most modern games ask of you is to push the right button after being told which button to push, but the interrogations in LA Noire go beyond the realm of difficulty into "unfair" territory. Failing through an inability to correctly parse syntax is not fun, no matter in what context.
Thankfully the game will keep chugging along through the story even if you nab the wrong guy and completely suck as a detective, and once you've played a case, it's easy enough to go back and try again. You can also sandbox the game via "Streets of L.A." mode, which allows you to ride around in a police car, being a policeman, unlocking hidden cars, film reels and the like, and responding to radio calls. This takes some of the angst away from following through the story linearly, knowing you can go back for the extras whenever you like. Completionists who also want to see how the story plays out (like me) will feel like they've got the best of both worlds.
Bottom Line: LA Noire is the type of game we jump up and down over - full of story and style and oozing playability and charm. Unfortunately the single, awkward mechanic of the interrogations mars what could have been a flawless recreation of a classic genre.
Recommendation: You don't have to be a fan of traditional sandbox games to get something out of LA Noire. The dark and gritty narrative, investigative angle and collectibles make this one a win for all kinds of gamers. If you're even mildly curious, it's worth picking up.

Rockstar har alltid lyckats skapa djupgående handlingar som de sedan berättat på ett mästerligt sätt, och det här spelet, från Team Bondi i Sydney, är inget undantag. Ribban läggs så högt att troligen kommer inget annat spel i år ens komma i närheten.
Det enda som hindrar mig från att utnämna LA Noire till årets spel är den andra saken du behöver veta om spelet: Att faktiskt spela spelet kommer göra dig riktigt jävla förbannad, och det ofta. Det går att kritisera LA Noire för samma saker som andra liknande sandlådespel (det är svårt att köra bilar, det är omöjligt att kontrollera kameran, jag vet inte vart jag ska… bla bla bla). Bortser man från detta kan man inte säga annat än att de nya element som introduceras i LA Noire, i ett försök att återskapa detektivkonsten, känns lite antingen eller. Detta är egentligen de enda snedstegen detta annars lysande spel tar.
Du spelar som Cole Phelps, en före detta marinsoldat som återvänt från kriget i Stilla Havet och nu gett sig in på en karriär som polis. Spelet följer kronologiskt Phelps detektivkarriär och hur han anförtros med att ta sig an en rad olika typer av utredningar. Vi får också se tillbakablickar till Phelps tjänstgöring i kriget mot Japan, samt snuttar om vad som hände med de andra soldaterna som återvände hem. Genom Phelps ögon får du uppleva de mörkare sidorna av efterkrigstidens Los Angeles och det märks att Rockstar och Team Bondi lagt ner oerhört mycket tid och möda i sin framställning av staden.
Den stil som infann sig under efterkrigstiden bara dryper ur spelet. Allt ifrån det speciella språket som talades på gatorna, hur kvinnor och minoriteter behandlades, jazz, salongssångerskor, bilar med stora kofångare och den udda blandningen mellan extrem artighet och hårdkokthet som gjorde 40-talets Los Angeles så unikt. Spelet är löst baserat på historier om hårdkokta detektiver samt gamla Noirefilmer. Även om man lånar en hel del från bägge känns ändå handlingen i LA Noire ny och fräsch. Trots den stora mängden filmsekvenser känns spelet sällan tråkigt. Själva spelandet och berättandet är så skickligt sammanvävda att det inte känns som den ena får mer utrymme än den andra och tillsammans skapar de något ännu bättre, något som varken känns som en interaktiv film eller ett actionspel.
Själva spelandet kan delas in i tre kategorier: skjutande och körande, undersökningar och förhör. De som spelat ett Rockstarspel, eller i princip vilket annat sandlådespel som helst, kommer direkt att känna igen sig när det gäller skjutandet och körandet. Den stora skillnaden här är bilarna. Det finns nästan hundra olika varianter och samtliga känns mer eller mindre som de ursprungligen gjorde att köra, däribland ovanligheter som en Trucker Torpedo.
Alla bilar går att köra och att fara fram längs de motorvägsbefirade gatorna i Los Angeles, göra en bredsladd in i en spårvagn och kvadda tidningskiosker är precis så kul som det låter. Eftersom du också tillhör poliskåren är det inget som hindrar dig från att sätta igång sirenen på en de många polisbilarna och susa fram mellan två vägbanor medan de goda medborgarna laglydigt kör åt sidan. Att sätta sig bakom ratten på en amerikansk bakhjulsdriven polisbil med ett hölje gjort av pansar, dra på blåljuset och bränna fram i mitten av en tvåfilig väg, blåsa förbi rödljus med gasen i botten och sladda igenom en tajt kurva med handbromsen i är bland det roligaste du kommer göra i ett spel. Jag rekommenderar att du gör det så ofta det bara går.
Undersökningarna går främst ut på att finkamma en brottsplats i jakten på ledtrådar som i sin tur kan leda till andra undersökningar eller förhör (mer om dessa strax). Att hitta ledtrådar är förhållandevis okomplicerat och eftersom spelet utspelar sig långt före CSI eller DNA kan du plocka upp allt du hittar och till och med vandra rätt igenom blodspår. Ingen bryr sig. Det finns heller inget tvång på vetenskaplighet (fingeravtryck och blodtyper var fortfarande nymodigheter på den här tiden) så det är bara att ge sig i kast med gammalt hederligt detektivarbete, vilket innebär att du får vandra runt, undersöka cigarettfimpar och följa ledtrådarna vart de än leder. Detta är förvånansvärt kul men blir irriterande senare i spelet då du ska undersöka mordbränder.
Något annat som är irriterande: förhör. Det här är ett av de områden där spelet faller platt, vilket är synd eftersom allt det som utgör en bra spelmekanik finns där. Det slår slint där det så ofta slår slint i dialoger med mer än ett svarsalternativ. Tre svarstyper som aldrig ändras erbjuder inte tillräckligt med variation för att innefatta alla de sätt riktiga människor kan kommunicera med varandra på. Tekniken bakom ansiktsanimationerna är förvisso verkligen otrolig. Animationerna hjälper definitivt att knyta samman det karaktärerna säger (och hur de säger det) och vad spelaren förväntas tänka när man försöker förstå de visuella ledtrådarna som ges. Dock är svarsalternativen till dessa ledtrådar begränsade och din karaktärs beteende kan i sin tur vara vilseledande och förvirrande beroende på vilka val du gör.
I LA Noire förhör du misstänkta personer utifrån en rad frågor som baseras på hur långt du kommit i din undersökning. Ledtrådar och vittnesmål leder till ytterligare frågor och bevismaterial kan användas för att bevisa att någon ljuger för dig.
Efter det att du ställt en fråga kommer du få ett svar varpå du kan välja om du tror på det den misstänkte säger, betvivlar dennes svar eller om du tror att hon eller han helt enkelt ljuger. Ansiktsmodelleringen är så perfekt att du ibland känner igen skådespelare för deras ansikten och inte deras röst vilket i sig är fantastiskt att se i ett TV-spel. Ansiktena är så verklighetstrogna att det verkligen känns som om det är en riktig person som pratar med dig. Tyvärr kommer du bara ha begränsad nytta av att lära dig ”läsa” någons ansikte. Problemen uppstår när du ska försöka förutse vad Phelps kommer säga när du väljer ett svarsalternativ. Allt som oftast är han antingen för aggressiv eller inte aggressiv nog. Det värsta av allt är att du inte kan ångra ditt val. Om du misslyckas med ett förhör finns risken att du missar viktiga ledtrådar vilket till och med kan leda till att du sätter fel person i fängelse. Om du vill göra om en viss undersökning måste du börja om helt från början. Med tanke på att de flesta undersökningarna tar flera timmar är detta ett ganska tungt avvägande.
Det blir ännu krångligare när du anklagar någon för att ljuga. Personen i fråga kommer kräva något som stöder din anklagelse varpå du kan visa upp någon dina insamlade ledtrådar och använda detta som bevismaterial. Tyvärr tvingas du ofta gissa när du ska lista ut sambandet mellan frågan du nyss ställt och beskrivningarna som gess för de olika ledtrådarna. Många gånger förstod jag helt enkelt inte vad spelet var ute efter, inte ens efter att ha spelat igenom fallet flera gånger. En lagom svår utmaning är det absolut inget fel på, inte minst då många moderna spel kräver som mest att du ska trycka på rätt knapp efter du fått instruktioner om vilken knapp du ska trycka på. Dock går förhören i LA Noire bortom svårt och rätt in i orättvisans territorium. Att misslyckas med en uppgift på grund av att man inte kunde analysera syntax på ett korrekt sätt är aldrig roligt, oavsett vilket sammanhang det sker i.
De goda nyheterna är att handlingen rullar vidare även om du råkar sätta dit fel kille och fullkomligt suger på att vara detektiv. Det är också lätt att gå tillbaka och spela om ett fall efter det att du klarat det för första gången. Du kan också spela i sandlådeläget ”Streets of L.A” där du kan åka runt i en polisbil, vara konstapel, låsa upp gömda bilar, filmklipp och dylikt samt besvara radioanrop. Detta tar bort lite av den ångest man känner när man följer handlingen för slaviskt eftersom man vet att man kan komma tillbaka till extramaterialet när man vill. De som vill se och göra allt och som också vill se hur historien slutar (som jag) kommer känna att de får det bästa av bägge världar.
Summan av kardemumman: LA Noire är den sortens spel som får oss att hoppa upp och ner. Det är fullpackat med story och fyllt med spelbarhet och charm. Tyvärr tyngs allt ned av de klumpiga förhörsdelarna och detta hindrar spelet från att bli en perfekt återskapelse av en klassisk genre.
Rekommendation: Du behöver inte gilla traditionella sandlådespel för att få ut något av LA Noire. Den mörka och råa berättarstilen, sättet du undersöker saker på och mängden samlarobjekt gör att alla sorters spelare kommer hitta något att gilla. Om du ens är det minsta nyfiken så är det värt ett köp.
