Silvestre no pudo dejar de pensar que en China la vida era un milagro de cada hora y cada minuto. ¡Claro! -se dijo-, si los chinos son novecientos millones, de los cuales setecientos millones a lo menos son adultos, y si cada día se comen, supongamos, media libra de arroz, son ciento setentaicinco millones de kilos de arroz diarios.

Silvestre couldn’t stop thinking that in China life was a miracle, every minute of every hour. Of course, he thought, if there are nineteen hundred Chinese, six hundred thousand of which would be adults, and if they ate, let’s say, half a pound of rice every day, the daily consumption would be seventy-five million kilograms of rice.

Source text - Italian Un giorno arrivò in sartoria la notizia che Dino De Laurentiis stava girando un film con Sophia Loren a Fondi intitolato ‘La Ciociara’ (‘Le due donne’ in inglese). Noi ragazzi chiedemmo il permesso al nostro titolare di andare a vedere e lui disse di sì così andammo tutti. Una volta arrivati sul posto c’era tanta gente ma noi riuscimmo a passare davanti dove c’era Sophia. La circondammo e le chiedemmo un autografo e quando mi trovai davanti a lei tutto emozionato per avere la sua firma e lei mi chiese: “Dove la vuoi?”.
Translation - English One day at the atelier we heard rumours that Dino de Laurentis was in Fondi shooting a film with Sophia Loren, called ‘Two Women (‘La Ciociara’ in Italian). We told our boss we wanted to see Sophia so all of us went. We arrived to see a crowd of people but we managed to get close up to Sophia, surrounding her, asking for her autograph. When I found myself in front of her she asked me ‘where do you want it?’.
