אבא לא הסכים לקנות לי בובה של בארט סימפסון. אמא דווקא כן רצתה, אבל אבא לא הסכים לי, אמר שאני מפונק. "למה שנקנה, הא?" אמר לאמא. "למה שנקנה לו? הוא רק עושה פיפס ואת כבר קופצת לדום. "אבא אמר שאין לי כבוד לכסף, ושאם אני לא אלמד את זה כשאני קטן אז מתי אני כן אלמד? ילדים שקונים להם בקלות בובות של בארט סימפסון גדלים אחר-כך להיות פושטקים שגונבים מקיוסקים, כי הם מתרגלים שכל מה שהם רק רוצים בא להם בקלות. אז במקום בובה של בראט, הוא קנה לי חזיר מכוער מחרסינה עם חור שטוח בגב, ועכשיו אני אגדל להיות בסדר, עכשיו אני כבר לא אהיה פושטק

Dad wouldn't buy me a Bart Simpson doll. Mom actually did want to but dad wouldn't agree, said that I'm spoiled. "Why should we buy it huh?" he said to mom. "Why should we buy it for him? The slightest peep from him and you stand to attention." Dad said I don't have any respect for money and that if I don't learn that lesson when I'm little then when will I learn it? Kids who get bought Bart Simpson dolls easily then grow up to be shoplifting punks because they're used to everything they want coming to them easily. So instead of a Bart doll he bought me an ugly porcelain pig with a slit in the back, and now I'll grow up to be okay, now I'm not going to be a punk anymore.
Every morning now I have to drink a cup of cocoa even though I hate it. Cocoa with the skin is a one shekel coin, without the skin is half a shekel and if I throw up straight after then I don't get anything. I put the coins in the pig's back and then if you shake it, it rattles. When the pig has so many coins that it doesn't make a noise when you shake it then I'll get a skateboarding Bart doll. That's what dad says, that way it's educational.
The pig is actually nice. His nose is cold when you touch it and he smiles when you put the shekel in his back and also when you put in only half a shekel, but the best thing is that he smiles even when you don't.
I made up a name for him too, I call him Pesachzon after a man who once lived in our mailbox whose sticker my dad could never peel off. Pesachzon isn't like my other toys, he is much more calm with no lights and springs and batteries that leak inside him. You only have to mind him so he doesn't jump down from the table.
"Pesachzon be careful! You're porcelain," I say to him when I see him stooping a little and looking at the floor, and he smiles at me and waits patiently until I take him down there in my hand. I really love him when he smiles, it's only for him that I drink the cocoa with the skin every morning, so that I get to put the shekel in his back and see how his smile doesn't change at all. "I love you Pesachzon," I tell him afterwards, "truly, I love you more than dad and mom. And I will love you always no matter what, even if you shoplift. But dammit you better not jump off the table!"
Yesterday dad came, picked up Pesachzon and began shaking him upside down wildly. "Be careful dad," I told him, "you're giving Pesachzon a tummy ache." But dad went on. "He's not making any noise Yoavi, you know what that means? That tomorrow you're getting a skateboarding Bart Simpson." "Great. Only stop shaking Pesachzon, it makes him feel bad." Dad put Pesachzon back and went to get mom. He came back after a minute dragging my mom with one hand and holding a hammer in the other one. "You see I was right," he said to mom, "this way he will know to appreciate things, right Yoavi?" "For sure I know," I said, "for sure, but why a hammer?" "It's for you," dad said and put the hammer in my hand. "Just be careful." "For sure I'll be careful," I said, and I was really careful, but after a few minutes dad got fed up and he said: "well, break the pig already." "What?" I asked, "break Pesachzon?". "Yes, yes Pesachzon," said dad. "Well break it, you deserve the Bart Simpson, you worked hard enough for it."
Pesachzon smiled at me the sad smile of a porcelain pig who understands that his time has come. Screw Bart Simpson, I'm supposed to hit a friend in the head with a hammer? "I don't want Simpson." I gave the hammer back to dad: "Pesachzon is enough for me." "You don't understand," dad said, "it's really okay, it's educational, come, I'll break it for you." Dad already raised the hammer and I looked at mom's broken eyes and at Pesachzon's tired smile and I knew that
it's all on me; if I don't do something he is dead. "Dad," I grabbed his leg, "What Yoavi?" dad said with the hammer still in the air. "I want another Shekel please," I pleaded. שמי בּרוּנוֹ בּרוּמהַרט, ובילדותי גדעו את ידי הימנית. מאז מכנים אותי "האיש בלי יד", ועוד כינויים. בשעתו היו כינויים אלה מבעירים את חמתי, עכשיו הם מעוררים בי קצת שאט נפש ולא יותר. בני אדם הם קצרי השגה, ולא מתארים לעצמם כי ביד שמאל אפשר לעשות מה שעושים בשתי ידיים, ולעתים אפילו יותר. אוסיף: אנשים עם שתי ידיים נראים לי לעתים מגוחכים ביחסם המובן מאליו לחיים. אדם בלי צלקת הוא אדם בלי סבר, וכמוהו יש עדרים שלמים. בילדותי דמיינתי שיד תצמח לי, והיא תהיה חזקה יותר מהיד שנקטעה. בגיל עשר מחקתי מלבי אשליה זו. מאז אני מה שאני. אני שונא שמרחמים עלי. הרחמים הם סוג של אהבת עצמך. אדם הגון אינו מרחם על עצמו.

Chapter 1
My name is Bruno Brumehart and when I was a child my right arm was amputated. Since then they call me 'The man with no arm' and other names. These names used to consume me with rage; nowadays I feel naught more than a little contempt. Human beings are short sighted; they can't fathom the left hand alone mastering what they do with both hands and at times even more. I'll go even further: people with two hands seem to me ridiculous at times with their obvious attitude to life. A man without a scar is a man without a face, and there are herds and herds of them. As a child I imagined that I would sprout a new arm and that it would be stronger than the arm I lost. At age ten I eradicated this illusion from my heart. Since that day I am what I am. I loath being pitied. Pity is a form of self love. A decent man doesn't pity himself.
I open with this to avoid complaints. I don't play games of hide and seek. I say what I have to say. Sometimes people fail to understand me or they misinterpret what I say. I am always myself and I do not intend to change. In the past I had the urge to explain and clarify, to set the record straight as they say. Now I have none of that. Having minimized talk, I have a new perspective: wordlessness. I've learned that silence is the steadiest compass. And I have crafted an entire method of it: I can remain silent for a week. People imagine that I am depressed or indifferent. They're mistaken. I am simply distant from them. My silence elevates me and I sit and observe; and thereby I guzzle up years and distances. My thirst cannot be quenched but by another silence. Silence is alcohol to me. I drink and drink and remain thirsty. There are times, I admit, when I am flooded by that old desire to talk and to explain but I don't succumb to it.
I turned fifty yesterday. It's a marvel that I made it this far. My parents feared that I would not live long, but it would appear that I was determined to persist and here I am before you.
My parents perished at a young age. The passage of time altered their appearance but their dedication to me remained unaltered. Their love of me, especially once I was hurt, knew no bounds. It was a great love that ensconces me to this day. They strengthened my faith in the afterlife. I don't know quite what it will be like but I don't doubt its existence regardless. Years ago, in winter, beside a frozen river, I sensed that my life was nearing theirs and in one instance I even saw them - or their silhouettes to be precise - approach me. In the last few years they never leave my side. Death is a terror fixed in our heart like a rusted nail. It will transpire one day that it was never true; that it was only ever a fiction.
On this matter as well as others, my ex wife was entirely obtuse. She was more earthy than the rocks. Whatever her very own eyes never glimpsed was never in existence. Once she said to me "you are caught in dreams." I couldn't believe my ears. I, who had conducted business in Germany, the Netherlands, St. George Islands, Naples, and where not, I, who hundreds of people worked in my corporation, I, she says, am caught in dreams. She had been showered in cliches in her youth and they stuck in her head ever since. The word "god" had apparently always frightened her. As I said, she saw nothing beyond that which the pupils of her own eyes exhibited, and not one millimeter more. I explained once to her something regarding latent feelings. She looked at me as though I had lost my mind. Words she did not understand would drive her out of her mind.
After that I stopped talking to her. From time to time she would come alive and lecture before me the cliches that she picked up in high school. I didn't know if to feel pity for her or contempt. As the years went by I felt increasing indifference towards her that was akin to deafness. When she talked I would lower my head. Apart from one expression that would amuse me I registered nothing of her. Deafness, so I learned, is a useful defect.
