Source text - Italian Scacciò un insetto che si era posato sulla guancia sudata. Sarà stata la centesima volta, ma quel maledetto continuava a tornare. L’odore di polvere da sparo e carne morta attirava quei piccoli esseri svolazzanti a frotte. Si coprì il naso con l’uniforme polverosa e respirò a fondo. Tossì con forza, sputando sul terriccio di fronte a lui del muco rossiccio. La trincea era piccola, claustrofobica, e lo schiacciava, e ovunque si girasse c’erano piccoli insetti striscianti, o forse non c’erano. Ogni tanto provava a schiacciarne uno con lo stivale, ma non riusciva mai a trovare i loro corpicini. La cosa lo faceva infuriare.
Translation - English He chased away the bug from his sweaty cheek. It had been the hundredth time, but that little insect kept coming back. The scent of gunpowder and charred skin attracted swarms of those nasty little animals. He covered his nose with his dusty uniform and took a deep breath. He coughed heavily, spitting some reddish snot on the dirt before him. The trench was small, claustrophobic, and it crushed him, and wherever he turned he saw thousands of crawling insects. Or maybe they weren’t truly there. Sometimes, he tried to crush them under his boot; but he could never find any corpse. He found that infuriating.
