I find jazz meaningful and delightful for a happy riot of reasons: its grand tradition and respect for standards, its uniquely American (but also global) identity, its breaking of color barriers, its persistence through changing musical fashions (jazz will never die), its courageous freedom within beautiful forms, and more. Therefore, I was fascinated to find that the prolific literary critic and philosopher Terry Eagleton likens the meaning of life to a jazz performance. That sounds promising!
In his book The Meaning of Life, Eagleton sensitively describes the performance of "a good jazz group." It is worth quoting at length.
The free expression of each member [acts] as the basis for the free expression of the others. As each player grows more musically eloquent, the others draw inspiration from this and are spurred to greater heights. There is no conflict here between freedom and "the good of the whole," yet the image is the reverse of totalitarian... There is self-realization, but only through a loss of self in the music as a whole. There is achievement, but it is not the question of self-aggrandizing success. Instead, the achievement—the music itself—acts as a medium of relationship among the performers. There is pleasure to be reaped from this artistry, and—since there is a free fulfilment or realization of powers—there is also happiness in the sense of flourishing. Because this flourishing is reciprocal, we can even speak, remotely and analogically, of a kind of love. One could do worse, sure, than propose such a situation as the meaning of life—both in the sense that it is what makes life meaningful, and—more controversially—in the sense that when we act in this way, we realize our natures at their finest.
So far, so good—but not for long. After this rhapsodic description—with which I completely agree—Eagleton negates it all by wiping away the whole horizon of meaning with his philosophy of life. After saying that jazz is not itself the meaning of life—and I again agree with him—he says, "What we need is a form of life which is completely pointless, just as the jazz performance is pointless." In a dizzying turnaround, Eagleton writes that since the jazz performance is "a delight in itself," it need not serve "a utilitarian purpose" or require "a justification beyond itself." He then metaphysically extrapolates that in "this sense, the meaning of life is interestingly close to meaninglessness."
A stellar jazz performance is "a delight in itself." It can be experienced as delightful without reflection on the larger perennial philosophical questions of whether history has meaning or whether there is an afterlife. The environs of aesthetic excellence concentrate our attention on the playing of the music or the words of the poem, since they stand out so vividly in relation to all that is not superlative.
Eagleton errs egregiously, though, in claiming that the performance is pointless or meaningless. Each musician has a point in playing with the others: to make good music as opposed to bad music. If the drummer took a solo in the middle of the head of the piece, he would miss the point of the music. The meaning would be trashed. If the trumpet player played in the wrong key, he would miss the point of the music. If any or all of the musicians played in order to upset or harm their audience, they would lose the point of a performance of a piece of music, which is to entertain an audience. Jazz as an art form has a point. In fact, it has many points: it honors the tradition of the music, it respects the jazz standards, and it requires improvisation within a group form. But, we may go deeper.
Jazz is performed by creatures who are unique in the land of the living, unique in their species (to use a cold biological term), and unique in their individual personalities. Humans alone, from the beginning, have consciously made art and cannot live without it. A bird call differs from Bird's call to Dizzy Gillespie as they trade chops in bebop. In their high-octane, high-wire performances, Bird ( Charlie Parker) and Dizzy Gillespie, both virtuosos, were unique in their style and personalities. People stamp their unrepeatable individuality on the cosmos more deeply than any other member of any other species. That human touch is meaningful, not meaningless. The point is to bring something meaningful into the world.
What if we adopt "a form of life that is completely pointless," as Eagleton advises? As an atheist, Eagleton cannot ascribe any divinely given and objective purpose, meaning, value, or point to the cosmos, humanity, or any particular person. As fellow atheistic philosopher Bertrand Russell once put it in a debate with a Christian, "The universe is just there." If so, there is no author of the story, no music of the spheres, no "Lord of the star fields, ancient of days" (in singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn's words). As Shakespeare's Macbeth says, "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
Professor Eagleton cannot have it both ways. Either jazz has meaning because life as a whole has meaning, or jazz has no meaning if life as a whole has no meaning. It does not take a jazz concert to tell us that life has meaning. When we are overwhelmed by gratitude at the birth of a child or the beauty of a sunset, when we are outraged over the abuse of children or animals, when we want truth and justice to prevail, when we deeply yearn for a world beyond our broken world, we at least tacitly assume that the cosmos is not on its own and that it has purpose, value, and meaning. Then we take in a stellar jazz performance, with all the qualities that Eagleton explains, and it is a good time to drink it all in and thank the Giver for the gift.

Source text - English Nina Simone found success from the beginning of her recording career in 1959. With the release of Nina Simone at Town Hall (Colpix), her third album that year, she became a fixture on the downtown New York club scene. Her life and career took a different turn not long afterward. Simone's activism in the Civil Rights Movement deepened in the 1960s as a reaction to the assassination of Medgar Evers and the fatal bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Moving to the Dutch label Philips, with the release of Nina Simone in Concert (1964), she used her notoriety as a platform for addressing racial inequality in the U.S. Her song of protest, "Mississippi Goddam," from that album, damaged her career in America, her music boycotted in several Southern States. Simone supported the violent revolutionary philosophy of her New York neighbor, Malcolm X, and advocated a separate African American state. By the late 1960s both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. had also been assassinated and the disillusioned artist left the U.S. in 1970, never living in her native country again. Simone was untethered, living in Barbados, then Liberia, Switzerland, the Netherlands and finally France, where she remained until her death. Her assets dwindled in Europe but she preferred playing small clubs, for little compensation, to returning to the U.S.
Fodder On My Wings was originally released on the French label Carrere in 1982 and had been re-released on three labels before this Verve edition. From her days at Colpix, Simone's contracts gave her significant creative control, including her choice of album material. It has been a drawback on many Simone albums, as her wildly varying tastes made for a chaotic sequence of songs. Fodder On My Wings is no exception. However, the strength of many of the thirteen songs tips the scale in Simone's favor. The calypso style of "I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive" and "Liberian Calypso" reflects the influences of her shifting home bases, augmented by her raw, commanding vocals. The spirituals "Il y a un Baume a Gilead" and "Thandewye" are especially appealing in different ways; the French version of "There is a Balm in Gilead" is compassionate, while the latter song emits visceral power. "Vous Etes Seuls, Mais Je Desire Etre Avec Vous" (You are alone, but I want to be with you), despite being an almost constant repetition of the title, is one of the most appealing songs on the album.
A few tracks just don't work because they are a bad fit in the collection or feature puerile lyrics. "Stop" is Simone's critical statement on the show tune "Send in the Clowns." She tells us that the song has no purpose, thereby creating a circular argument with her evaluation. "Alone Again Naturally" re-tools the original lyrics to fit the death of Simone's father, and she adds in some Japanese piano passages; the whole thing is a little too messy to evoke genuine emotion. Novelty tunes and a lack of consistency diminish the overall listening experience to some extent but, had the strongest material on this album stood alone, Fodder On My Wings might have been essential. Simone was a great vocalist, a talented musician and composer with powerful things to say, and they should be heard.

The last time I rode a mountain bike I was a fearless 11-year-old, undaunted by gravel, steep slopes and the prospect of a broken collarbone as I tried to master a wheelie. The last time I was in a treehouse I was a bookish 11-year-old, who saw the spider-infested, lichen-covered box in the branches at the end of the garden as a private kingdom I could visit to rearrange my football-sticker swap piles. Now, in my 30s, could a weekend combining the two transport me back to the joys of childhood?
Treehouses have moved up in the world in the past 20 years. Dafydd and Ceri Tomos, owners of Beudy Banc, have recently turned a traditional campsite into a glamping site, with cabins powered by wind and solar energy dotted around a lush valley near the Welsh market town of Machynlleth. In the branches of a giant oak, the treehouse is the most recent addition and thanks to a stove, shower and double bed, it has little in common with my childhood refuge. For a start, it has at least 20 miles of mountain bike routes on its doorstep.
Dafydd’s email before we arrived described them as “downhill trails” but I know enough about hills to know that’s only half the story. Luckily, bikes my partner and I borrowed had a generous lowest gear that made all but the steepest sections easy to get up (slowly). Much of the route we chose was through fields of grazing sheep, and dismounting was necessary for the many gates connecting them, each one seemingly with a different locking mechanism to keep us on our toes.
The ridge that runs above Beudy Banc provides panoramic views across the Dyfi valley, taking in Cardigan Bay to the west, the gently sloping peak of Cader Idris to the north and the Cambrian Mountains to the south. White specks of sheep dot the fields, far outnumbering humans – we covered about 20km over four hours, and two lost walkers were the only people we saw. As for the sheep, they were curious about us but as soon as we got too close they would turn and run.
The treehouse cabin was a welcome sanctuary as the rain rolled in, with its hot shower and stove stocked with environmentally friendly sawdust briquettes. Within a few minutes we were warm and clean, and had a perfect view of the sunset through the enormous windows. The cabins have strong eco-credentials, too, using solar and wind power to supply the electric sockets.
Although the nearest place to stock up on supplies is in Machynlleth, there was no risk of going hungry – in the nearby roadside verges alone we found wild damsons we stewed on the treehouse’s gas hob, as well as blackberries, hazelnuts and even a few mushrooms.
After breakfast in the treehouse, we set out again on our bikes for the top of the ridge before descending on farm tracks into the village of Glantwymyn for a drink at the Dovey Valley Hotel. We planned a circular route that split our time between off-road trails and lightly trafficked B-roads, and stopped off for lunch at the White Lion in Machynlleth for the meatiest steak pie I’ve ever tasted.
Bumping through pastures and down dirt tracks was tremendous fun and surprisingly easy for two cautious beginners more used to city cycling, but this part of Wales is a paradise for more-seasoned mountain bikers as well. Dafydd has built a snaking downhill track at Beudy Banc itself, and there are nationally renowned tracks a few miles north of Machynlleth, including the black-diamond-difficulty ClimachX trail. For the really tough, the area also hosts the annual Dyfi Enduro, a 56km endurance race.
We relied on our bikes and the local taxi firms to get in and out of Machynlleth, a lively market town with five pubs, a few cafes and restaurants, three bookshops and several antique shops. It’s an ideal destination for walkers, too, with two long-distance footpaths, Glyndwr’s Way and the Dyfi Valley Way, passing through.
A final morning walk through the fields was rewarded with the sight of squirrels darting up trees as the sun glinted off the dewy grass. A taxi back to Mach, as the locals refer to it, dropped us at the Tŷ Medi vegetarian cafe on the high street for buttery cheese scones and friendly questions from proud locals who were all keen to know where we had stayed, what we had done, and what we thought of their town. Fortunately, there was no need for polite white lies – I was more than happy to sing the praises of the area after a weekend that left me, if not quite 11 years old again, at least slightly rejuvenated.

There are ways to make the airport process more pleasant for yourself and fellow travelers.
Airports are not generally known as fun and carefree places. But that doesn’t mean you have to add to the unpleasantness.
“Traveling is stressful,” Jodi R.R. Smith, president of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, told HuffPost. “But if you go into a situation that you know is going to be stressful with a negative attitude, it will only prove to be true.”
In the case of airports, sometimes rude behaviors can even slow down the speed and efficiency of the process for everyone, so it’s important to be mindful.
To that end, HuffPost asked etiquette experts to identify some rude behaviors they often observe at the airport. Read on for 13 examples.
Not Tipping At Curbside Check-In
“If you’re able to check your bag curbside, you definitely should because it frees you to move around the airport without having to drag your bags,” said Smith. “But you should be prepared to tip those men and women who stand outside in the heat and cold.”

She noted that a couple of dollars per bag is standard, but you should tip more if the bags are bigger or heavier.
Holding Up Lines
The process of going through the airport can involve many long lines, so it’s important to be respectful of others and do your part to keep things moving as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“Have your ID ready and be prepared to remove your shoes at security,” said Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert, author of “Modern Etiquette for a Better Life” and founder of The Protocol School of Texas.
“Don’t be surprised when a kiosk or agent opens up,” Smith said, noting that the time spent waiting in line offers the opportunity to get everything ready. “Pay attention to signs and announcements. Look around and see what people in front of you are doing to speed up the process. The idea is to make this as safe and painless for everyone involved. If you’re aware of your surroundings, you make the process less painful.”
Being Harsh With Airport Employees
The people who work at airports have to deal with angry and frustrated travelers all day. If you’re upset about a flight delay or lost luggage, don’t lash out at airport employees. In addition to being rude, that approach may work against your interest.
“When you’re mean to the airport workers, that does not incentivize them to want to help you,” Smith explained. “If you really are in need of assistance, you want to be as diplomatic as possible. A little bit of good cheer can go a long way. Smile at baggage handlers, ticket agents, TSA workers. Say thank you. They have long, hard shifts, and courtesy is contagious.”
Pushing To The Front Of Security
“Don’t arrive late and then expect everyone to allow you to move to the front of the line,” said Gottsman. “Emergencies happen, but when checking in or going through security, give yourself enough time for delays.”
Leaving Your Bins Behind
When you’re finished with a bin, don’t leave it on the conveyor belt to create a backlog. This can hold up the security process for others.
“Gather your things, check the bin and put it in the return spot. Some now even have automated ones,” said Smith, noting that it doesn’t take a lot of effort.
Regrouping In The Middle Of Security
Once you’ve retrieved your belongings on the other side of the TSA scanner, go to the designated bench or table area to regroup.
“People like to stop right there to put their shoes and belts back on,” Smith observed, comparing this to stopping at the top of an escalator. “Go to the benches or vestibule to put things back together. Make it easy for the people behind you.”
There are many steps in the airport process where travelers should be mindful of their manners.
Blocking The Moving Sidewalk
Stopping in the middle of a moving sidewalk is an etiquette no-no.
“If you want to stand, you and your luggage need to be in a straight line all the way to the right so that people can walk on the left,” said Smith, adding that she generally encourages people to walk on moving sidewalks, rather than stand.
“Do not block these and impede other travelers’ progress,” she said. “At some airports, you’re lugging yourself and your bags for what feels like miles between gates, so if you can save a couple steps, all the better. And if there are people coming, your children shouldn’t be running backwards.”
Hogging Seats At Crowded Gates
Odds are there will be many other people at your gate, so don’t spread out and occupy more seats than you need.
“So many people take up not only the chair they’re sitting in, but also one next to them with all their food and the other side with their bags,” Smith explained. “If you’re at an active gate, you’re allowed to have one seat. If you want to spread out like that, look for an unused gate.”
Not Attending To Your Children
It’s good to let your kids move about in the airport to tire them out before a flight. But that doesn’t mean leaving them to their own devices.
“Pay attention to your surroundings. Look for an empty gate for your child to run about, not one that is filled with people,” said Smith.
Getting Angry With Kids
On the flip side, it’s also rude to make a fuss about parents who are attending to their children but not able to calm them down.
“Avoid rolling your eyes at children who are tired from flight delays and don’t have the ability to behave like an adult,” Gottsman advised.
Complaining About Small Things
At the airport, it may be tempting to forget the difference between an actual issue and what’s just part of the process.
“Go into this with the ‘hurry up and wait’ attitude,” said Smith. “You may manage to get lucky and not encounter many lines, but you can presume that you’re going to wait somewhere along the way. Don’t be surprised and don’t act annoyed and mutter under your breath just because you have to wait.”
Blocking Terminal Walkways
“When you’re walking down the terminal to your gate, two abreast is the max,” said Smith. “Five people in your party cannot walk in a line and block others from getting to their gate or exiting the airport.”
Indeed, just because you have a long connection and can walk at a leisurely pace doesn’t mean others are in that situation. You could be a speed block for someone on a tight connection racing to board their plane.
Swarming The Boarding Area
There’s a term for airplane passengers who push ahead and clog the front of the boarding area long before their group is called: gate lice. Needless to say, etiquette experts consider this behavior to be rude.
“Wait for your group to be called before you line up,” Gottsman said. ”Avoid blocking the walkway with your luggage if it’s not your turn to board.”

Yes, it’s a season full of cosiness and cheer, but the pressure to have a “perfect Christmas” leaves more than a third of us feeling stressed. When it comes to the festive period, it can feel like there’s an extensive checklist of activities, meals, songs and emotions that all need ticking off if you want to do Christmas “right”. But for some mavericks, bucking the “perfect Christmas” trend and doing what works for them – not what’s expected – has led to some unexpected rewards.
Vicki Psarias, 39, author and mother, has found that focusing on experiences rather than material things can keep stress at bay. “We often go away to avoid hassle. For example, we went to Lapland one year, and we flew to Prague on Christmas Day last year,” she says, adding that it helps to keep stress down as she doesn’t have to prepare anything on the day. Going away does have its drawbacks, however. Her mum, in particular, misses her during these festive trips, so Psarias makes sure to spend some Christmases with her too. When she is celebrating at home, her vegan diet keeps stress down as it reduces time spent preparing and cooking food.
Christmas is, typically, a time to spend with family. But when they live on the other side of the world, that’s easier said than done. For Australian-born Marcus Browne, 35, having family abroad has meant taking a different approach to the holidays. “Going back to Australia for Christmas is, for a start, pretty expensive. It also makes it a lot harder to catch up with friends while you’re there, as they’re all busy over that period,” he says.
Instead, he’s found different ways to spend the season: “When I haven’t gone back, I’ve tended to host a big Christmas Day lunch with fellow marooned Australians and friends from different parts of the world. It’s a lot of fun, but I decided to volunteer for charity last year.
“The shelter I volunteered at provided all kinds of support and services, from legal advice to haircuts. The incredible work done by those who were not only willing to give up their time but provide their expertise in all sorts of areas was really an inspiration.”
For some, the cost of buying gifts for every single relative can add to the stress. This was how Bindi Holding, 62, felt, until she decided to swap the traditional rules of gift-giving for a family-wide secret Santa. “We buy only one present, so we have the time and money to think it out carefully,” she says. “The fun part is that they are all wrapped in newspaper, unnamed, and after receiving our gift we all have to guess who bought it.” It’s easy to feel like you’re losing something by ditching a tradition but, as Holding shows, following your own path can create a new sense of fun, while keeping festivities manageable.
If you want to pull out all the stops for Christmas, the key is to find joy in the preparation and let go of any expectations, Stef Bottinelli, 45, says. “While I love things being nice and pretty, we are not the type of people who fret if the dog ‘unwraps’ a gift that doesn’t belong to her. That attitude alone takes a lot of stress away.”
A positive attitude can make the most menial Christmas tasks a treat: “I love preparing some of the food in advance, I see it as a joyful thing to do in the lead-up to Christmas, not as a chore,” she says. “But there’s no point making a big deal if the shops run out of Christmas cake.”
The centuries of tradition that make up what we view as the ideal Christmas today can feel like a huge weight to carry. Perhaps, instead, it’s better to think of them as a smörgåsbord of options from which you can choose from.
That might still mean going all out; but for those who can separate expectations from what they actually want, it can save a whole lot of time running around like a headless turkey – pun intended.

Everyone on Earth did. Everyone with any sense of lab safety anyway. Never assume any liquid is just water. When you say “I always document my experiments as I go along,” enough water falls to test, but not so much that you have to mop up the lab. Which lie doesn’t matter. The liquid tests as distilled water every time.
Uttering “this sentence is false” or some other paradox leaves you with such a sense of angst, so filled with the sense of an impending doom, that most people don’t last five seconds before blurting something unequivocal. So, of course, holding out for as long as possible has become the latest craze among drunk frat boys and hard men who insist on root canals without an anesthetic. Psychologists are finding the longer you wait, the more unequivocal you need to be to ever find solace.
Gus is up to a minute now and I wish he’d blurt something unequivocal. He’s neither drunk, nor a frat boy. His shirt, soaked with sweat, clings to a body that has spent twenty-seven too many hours a week at the gym. His knees lock stiff, his jeans stretched across his tensed thighs. His face shrinks as if he were watching someone smash kittens with a hammer. It’s a stupid game. Maybe in a few more weeks the fad will pass.
I don’t know why he asked me to watch him go through with it this time, and I don’t know why I’m actually doing it. Watching him suffer is like being smashed to death with a hammer myself. At least Gus is asking for it. I know I’m supposed to be rooting for him to hold on for as long as possible, but I just want him to stop. He’s hurting so much and I can’t stand to watch anymore.
“I love you, Matt.” Gus’s smile is radiant. He tackles me on the couch and smothers me in a kiss, and at first, I kiss him back.
Not only does no water fall on him, but all the sweat evaporates from his body. His shirt is warm and dry. A light, spring breeze from nowhere covers us. He smells of flowers and ozone. This makes me uneasier than if he’d been treated to a torrent. That, at least, I’d understand. I’d be sad, but I’d understand.
He’s unbuttoned and unzipped my jeans when my mind snaps back to the here and now. It’s not that his body doesn’t have more in common with Greek statues than actual humans. It’s not that he can’t explicate Socrates at lengths that leave my jaw unhinged. It’s that not only did “I love you, Matt” pull him out of his angst, but it actually removed water.
Fundamental laws of physics do that. Profound theorems of mathematics do that. “I love you, Matt” doesn’t count as a powerful statement that holds true for all time and space. Except when Gus says it, apparently.
“Wait.” I let go of him. My hands reach down to slide to a sit.
Gus stops instantly. He’s skittered back before my hands have even found the couch cushions. His head tilts up at me. This is the man who seconds ago risked going insane in order to feel soul-rending pain for fun. How can he suddenly look so vulnerable?
Oh, if there’s anything Gus can do, it’s put up a brave front. He does that stony-faced thing where his mouth is set in a grim, straight line better than anyone I know. But behind his hard, blue eyes, I can see the fear that’s not there even when some paradox rips him apart.
Best to take the pain now. I’m half-convinced nothing can actually hurt him, even when he’s afraid it might. It’d only hurt him more later.
“That’s some display you just did there, Gus.” I’m stalling. Stop that. “I don’t love you, not as much as you obviously love me.”
The water that falls on you from nowhere is freezing cold. I slip on the couch, but it just follows me. When it’s this much water, it numbs you to the bone. I want to scream, “What the fuck?” but if I even breathed, I’d drown. Gus tries to shield me, blocking my body with his, but not even he’s fast enough. I try to push him out of the downpour. However, he’s a mixed martial artist and I’m not. We share everything after the initial shock. The torrent lasts for seconds. We’re both soaked and he’s laughing so hard that he’s fallen off the couch, doubled over on the wet floor, flopping like a fish.
I feel like I should be insulted, but his laughter is joyous. It’s like the peal of giant bells, low booms that vibrate through you and make everything in the room rattle. I can’t tell if those are tears on his face, or just the water from nowhere.
My body shakes so hard, I can’t stand. The cushions squeak around me, keeping me bathed in ice cold water. Gus stands up. He’s not even shivering. He picks me up, wraps me in his arms, then kisses me gently on the forehead.
“I’m sorry, Gus. I just ruined your couch.” The floor is covered in rubber weight-lifting mats. I’ll mop that up once I can move again.
This just sends him into another fit of laughter, more controlled this time. His hands are gentle around my waist. Without them, I’m pretty sure I’d crash onto the floor.
“You’ve just told me that you love me in I think the only way you can, and you’re worried about the couch?”
Coming from anyone else, that sentence would make me feel too stupid to live. Still, he has a point. I fumble but can’t find any words to answer.
“It’ll dry off,” Gus says. “Besides, you bought the couch for me.”
Biotech engineers make more money than personal trainers, even the world’s most overqualified ones. Who knew? Rather than actually moving in together, I’ve been slowly furnishing his apartment. Gus has patiently assumed that once the apartment no longer looks like a cross between a library and weight room, I’ll move in. He’s long offered to move in with me, but I don’t want him to. My efficiency isn’t worthy of him. It’s just a body locker.
“I should clean up the mess I made.” I pull away and Gus catches me before I fall. He literally sweeps me off my feet.
“Stop fretting. It’s okay.”
We get out of our wet clothes in the bathroom and huddle together under blankets in bed. It isn’t until he starts shivering that I realize he’s just as cold as I am. The mixed martial artist has just been more heroic, or stupid, about it.
“You know.” Gus’s voice is surprisingly steady given how his teeth chatter. “Now that we know how we feel about each other, how about we solemnize the relationship? Make it official.”
My brow furrows so tightly, it hurts. He’s serious. As lightly he tossed it off, he meant it.
“You risked permanent insanity just to ask me to marry you?” Honestly, there are less life threatening ways.
“No, that was just training.” He’s not joking. “I can’t imagine life without you. You can’t imagine life without me. Say yes?”
The air stays resolutely dry. He could have made it all one big question to avoid letting whatever makes the water fall have a say.
“My family . . .” I have no idea how to broach this. It’s totally possible for him to love me and still never want to see me again.
“They know about me, right?” I swear the man reads minds.
“Yes?” It’s not a lie, but it’s not the truth either. The air gets distinctly humid. My arm hairs stand on end, as if thunder were about to strike. I’m still shivering from my last lie. My mind is in tatters, torn between the cruel truth that will make him lose all respect for me and the blatant lie that will plunge me into fatal hypothermia. The pang that gnaws at my heart grows and spreads. It wrings me, twisting and squeezing the life out of me. I jerk my face into what I want to be a smile.

Mi cuerpo está temblando tanto que no puedo mantenerme en pie. Los cojines chirrían a mi alrededor, manteniéndome hundido en agua fría. Gus se levanta. Ni siquiera está temblando. Me recoge, me envuelve con sus brazos y me besa suavemente en le frente.
“Lo siento, Gus. Acabo de arruinar tu sillón.” El suelo está cubierto de alfombrillas de hacer pesas. Voy a fregar en cuanto pueda moverme otra vez.
Esto le produce otro ataque de risa, esta vez más controlado, Sus manos se sienten suaves alrededor de mi cintura. Sin ellas, estoy seguro de que me caería al suelo.
“Acabas de decirme que me quieres de la única manera que sabes, creo yo, y ¿lo que te preocupa es el sillón?”
Si la hubiese dicho cualquier otra persona, esa frase me hubiese hecho sentir demasiado estúpido como para seguir viviendo. Pero igualmente, tiene su sentido. Murmuro algo pero no encuentro las palabras para responder.
“Se secará,” dice Gus, “Además, tú me compraste el sillón.”
Los ingenieros biotécnicos ganan más dinero que los entrenadores personales, incluyendo a los más sobrecalificados entre ellos. ¿Quién lo hubiese pensado? “Debería de limpiar el desastre que he formado.” Me alejo y Gus me agarra antes de caerme. Me recoge literalmente en barrido.
“Deja de preocuparte. No pasa nada.”
Nos quitamos la ropa mojada en el baño y nos apiñamos en la cama bajo las mantas. Hasta que no empieza a temblar no me doy cuenta de que tiene tanto frío como yo. El practicante de artes marciales simplemente ha sido más heroico, o estúpido, al respecto.
“Sabes.” La voz de Gus es sorprendentemente estable, considerando la manera de castañear de sus dientes. “Ahora que sabemos lo que sentimos el uno por el otro, ¿Qué te parece si solemnizamos la relación? La hacemos oficial.”
Mi ceño se arruga tan tensamente que duele. Está en serio. Lo suelta liferamente, pero es en serio.
“¿Te arriesgas a volverte loco para siempre solamente para pedirme que me case contigo?” Honestamente, hay maneras menos arriesgadas.
“No, solo era un entenamiento.” No está de broma. “No puedo imaginarme la vida sin ti. Tú no puedes imaginarte la vida sin mi. ¿Di que sí?”
El aire se mantiene firmemente seco. Podía haber convertido todo en una pregunta amplia para evitar que lo que sea que hace que caiga el agua tenga ni voz ni voto.
“Mi familia...” No tengo ni idea de cómo encarar esto. Para él es completamente posible quereme y a pesar de ello no quererme ver nunca más.

Avec «Flowers for Africa», l'étoile montante de l'art franco-canadien, 42 ans, a remporté les suffrages des collectionneurs privés.
Ce n’est pas le grand retour de la peinture que consacre la 20e édition du prix Marcel-Duchamp, décerné au centre Pompidou, mais plutôt des brassées de fleurs colorées, symboles fragiles d’une décolonisation fragile. Avec Flowers for Africa, la canadienne Kapwani Kiwanga est lauréate 2020 du prix des collectionneurs privés, avec une œuvre poétique et politique…
Commencé lors d’une résidence au Sénégal en 2013, ce projet s’inspire du décorum floral présent lors des négociations et des cérémonies d’indépendance des pays africains. L’artiste a retrouvé des archives avec des photos de discours et de défilés pour en reproduire les gerbes et les bouquets, matière végétale naturelle, pleine de couleurs et de vitalité, promise paradoxalement au pourrissement. L’histoire mouvante, vulnérable, qui se fane vite et renaît, voilà ce qui intéresse à la Franco-Canadienne, formée à l’anthropologie. «Il est important pour moi de mettre en avant dans mon travail la dimension personnelle de mon approche de l’histoire. Je suis avant tout une lectrice. Une interprète», expliquait Kapwani Kiwanga lors d’une exposition à la Ferme du Buisson en 2016.
«Histoires oubliées»
Présentée au prix Marcel-Duchamp par le rapporteur Emanuele Coccia, philosophe, le parcours et le palmarès de l’artiste de 42 ans impressionnent : Kapwani Kiwanga rafle de nombreux prix et attire l’intérêt des institutions les plus prestigieuses, comme le MIT de Boston. Née en 1978 à Hamilton, au Canada, d’un père tanzanien, Kapwani Kiwanga a étudié l’anthropologie et la religion comparée à l’université McGill de Montréal. Réalisatrice de documentaires à l’origine, elle investit peu à peu son anthropologie subjective dans le champ des arts plastiques et nourrit son art «des histoires oubliées», des récits qui sous-tendent la géopolitique contemporaine.
Arrivée en France en 2005, elle intègre un post-diplôme à l’école des Beaux-Arts de Paris, passe par le Fresnoy et suit des résidences aux Pays-Bas et la Box, à Bourges. Son intérêt pour l’histoire et l’anthropologie prend alors la forme d’installations, de sculptures, de photographies, de vidéos ou de performances. A la ferme Dubuisson, en 2016, elle s’est interessée par exemple aux traces matérielles de l’insurrection des Maji-Maji entre 1905 et 1907 contre l’occupant allemand au Tanganyika (actuelle Tanzanie), une révolte peu connue et réprimée dans un bain de sang. Remarquée au Canada puisqu’elle remporte le Sobey Art Award en 2018 (l’équivalent du Duchamp au Canada doté de 100 000 dollars) Kapwani Kiwanga est aussi lauréate du Frieze Award Artist à New York. Malgré l’engouement que rencontre son travail, la plupart des expositions de l’artiste ont été reportées à cause de la crise sanitaire. On peut néanmoins voir son projet syncrétique Nations à la galerie Poggi, qui présente sa troisième exposition personnelle, parallèlement à l’exposition au centre Pompidou du prix Marcel-Duchamp.

No es el gran retorno de la pintura lo que consagra la vigésima edición del premio Marcel-Duchamp, concedido en el Centro Pompidou, sino unas mezclas de flores de colores, símbolos frágiles de una descolonización frágil. Con Flowers for Africa, la canadiense Kapwani Kiwanga es la galardonada del premio 2020 de los coleccionistas privados, con una obra poética y política...
Comenzado durante una residencia en Senegal en el 2013, este proyecto se inspira en el decoro floral que estaba presente durante las negociaciones y ceremonias de la independencia del país africano. La artista ha encontrado archivos con fotos de discursos y desfiles para reproducir las coronas y los ramos, material vegetal natural, lleno de colores y de vitalidad, que paradójicamente promete su deterioro. La historia conmovedora, vulnerable, que se marchita rápidamente y renace, esto es lo que le interesa a la franco-canadiense, educada en la antropología. ≪Es importante para mí avanzar en mi trabajo la dimensión personal de mi enfoque de la historia. Sobre todo, soy una lectora. Una intérprete≫, explicaba Kapwani Kiwanga durante una exposición en la Ferme du Buisson en el 2016.
≪Historias olvidadas≫
Presentada al premio Marcel-Duchamp por el corredor Emanuele Coccia, filósofo, la trayectoria y el palmarés de la artista de 42 años impresiona: Kapwani Kiwanga arrampla con varios premios y atrae la atención de las instituciones más prestigiosas, como la MIT de Boston. Nacida en 1978 en Hamilton, Canadá, de padre tanzano, Kapwani Kiwanga estudió antropología y religión comparada en la Universidad de McGill de Montréal. Distinguida en Canadá, ya que consigue el premio Sobry Art Award en el 2018 (el equivalente del Duchamp en Canadá, dotado de 100.000 dólares) Kapwani Kiwanga recibe también el premio Frieze Award Artist en Nueva York. A pesar del entusiasmo que recibe su trabajo, la mayoría de las exposiciones de la artista han sido canceladas como resultado de la crisis sanitaria. Enregistré en Cornouailles, «Silver Ladders» captive par ses instrumentaux poétiques et mouvants.
La harpiste Mary Lattimore a quitté Los Angeles une dizaine de jours pour enregistrer l’album Silver Ladders («échelles d’argent») dans les Cornouailles. Elle y a retrouvé Neil Halstead de Slowdive, gloire du shoegaze des années 90 avec sa guitare dans les vapes et sa sérénité toujours contrariée par des bourrasques de distorsion. A Newquay, petit port de pêche du sud-ouest de l’Angleterre et repaire de surfeurs peu frileux où il vit avec sa famille, il a produit l’album et ajouté sa guitare aux 47 cordes de Mary Lattimore, dont on suit depuis longtemps le jeu éolien.
Harpiste depuis ses 11 ans, en Caroline du Nord où elle est née et a grandi, elle s’est ravitaillée auprès des romantiques Ravel, Debussy ou du harpiste français Marcel Tournier, tout en devenant fan de The Cure, puis de Brian Eno. Les harpistes qui s’aventurent hors des concertos et orchestres philharmoniques sont suffisamment rares pour que Lattimore soit repérée. Jouant pour le cinéma ou dans la sphère du rock indépendant, elle a travaillé sur les albums de Jarvis Cocker, Kurt Vile, Julianna Barwick, Thurston Moore et Meg Baird, avec qui elle sortait l’album de folk méditative Ghost Forests en 2018. Ces collaborations développent son instinct de compositrice et débloquent de sidérants albums solo. Sur Hundreds of Days, il y a deux ans, elle ajoutait des pédales d’effets, un thérémine, parfois sa voix, et des synthés. Les inserts technologiques sont moins revendiqués sur ce nouvel album, sorte de caracole de notes aux lents impacts, avec cette guitare réverbérée en amie distante. Slowdive avait collaboré en 1993 avec Brian Eno sur le titre Sing. Mary Lattimore, qui voue un culte à ce dernier, semble s’entendre avec Neil Halstead sur une dose ambient à donner, directement inspirée d’Eno. Sometimes He’s in My Dreams ou Til a Mermaid Drags You Under entretiennent ainsi une stridence radieuse et angoissante. Les titres poétiques donnés à ces instrumentaux renvoient aux râles de la mer et aux cliquetis métalliques. Le ronron de moteur de la guitare de Neil Halstead devient un bruit blanc dominant. Chop on the Climbout laisse gronder les ombres et prend le parti d’effacer complètement la harpe, dans un finale noise où l’échelle d’argent devient un toboggan pour glisser dans la brume qui rase le sable. En résidence de deux mois dans le comté de Marin, en Californie, la compositrice a donné carte blanche à la vidéaste Rachael Pony Cassells pour réaliser une vidéo de quarante minutes. Des images dominées par un noir à peine contrarié par une chandelle et l’écume d’une mer pétrole.

Allí se reunió con Neil Halstead de Slowdive, la gloria del Shoegaze de los años 90 con su guitarra en las nubes y su serenidad siempre contrariada por borrascas de distorsión. En Newquay, pequeño puerto pesquero del suroeste de Inglaterra y guarida de surferos poco frioleros donde vive con su familia, él ha producido el álbum y ha añadido su guitarra a las 47 cuerdas de Mary Lattimore, ya que seguimos desde hace tiempo el juego eólico.

Los injertos tecnológicos están menos reivindicados en este nuevo álbum, que es una especie de caracola de notas de impacto lento, con una guitarra reverberante a una distancia amigable. Slowdive había colaborado en 1993 con Brian Eno en el tema Sing. Mary Lattimore, que profesa un culto a este último, parece entenderse con Neil Halstead sobre la dosis de ambiente que dar, directamente inspirada por Eno. Sometines He’s in My Dreams o Til a Mermaid Drags You Under mantienen también una estridencia radiante y angustiosa. Los títulos poéticos dados a estas instrumentales nos llevan otra vez a los refunfuños del mar y a los traqueteos metálicos. El ronroneo de motor de la guitarra de Neil Halstead se vuelve un ruido blanco dominante. Chop o the Climbout hace que las sombras retumben y decide borrar completamente el arpa, en un final ruidoso en el que la escalera plateada se convierte en un tobogán para deslizar la niebla que roza la arena. En su residencia de dos meses en el condado de Marin, en California, la compositora le ha dado carta blanca a la videógrafa Rachel Pony Cassells para realizar un video de cuarenta minutos. Imágenes dominadas por un negro apenas revuelto por una vela y la espuma de un mar de petróleo.

My second specialization is the travel industry because I have worked many years in ticketing and customer service positions both at international airports as well as service centers.
I have lived in Spain, France, the United States, and Germany, where I currently work. I am fluent in all four languages and have extensive knowledge of the culture of these countries. My passion for reading in foreign languages allows me to increase my vocabulary and understanding constantly.
