English to Russian: Evaluation of human skin absorption and transport scattering coefficients.
Source text - English The aim of the study was to determine the absorption and transport scattering coefficient of the dermal and subdermal layers of human skin over the near infrared wavelength range which in our case was 620 to 1000 nm. The majority of data relates to caucasian skin but additional anecdotal data was also obtained from muscle and negroid skin. Human tissue samples were ex-vivo from either plastic surgery or post mortem examinations. The measurement method used diffuse reflectance and transmittance single integrating sphere measurements of 1.5 to 2 mm thick samples using the integrating sphere in "comparison mode". The reflectance and transmittance measurements being matched uniquely to Monte Carlo simulations of diffuse reflectance and transmittance for a 2D table of absorption and transport scattering coefficients. The method represents various refinements of a method started originally in the Department by Alan Smith and later by Michael Adams.
Temperature sensitivity of the optical coefficients was evaluated over a 25 to 40 degrees Celsius range by placing the experimental apparatus and samples in a temperature controlled chamber (neonatal incubator).
The results are suitable for use in more complex simulations of light transport in complex tissue models (e.g. Finite Element, Monte Carlo) involving skin structures, such as the head, abdomen, arm or leg.
Translation - Russian Целью данного исследования было определить коэффициент поглощения и транспортного рассеивания кожных и подкожных слоев человеческой кожи при длине волн близкой к инфракрасному диапазону, которая в нашем случае составляла от 620 до 1000 нм. Большинство данных относится к коже европейского типа, дополнительные казуистические данные были также получены по мускулам и негроидной коже. Образцы человеческой ткани были получены ex-vivo после пластической хирургии либо посмертного освидетельствования. В качестве метода измерения использовались однократные измерения коэффициента диффузного отражения и коэффициента пропускания с помощью фотометрического шара в образцах толщиной от 1,5 до 2 мм с использованием фотометрического шара в «контрольном» режиме. Измеренные коэффициенты отражения и пропускания однозначно соответствовали моделям Монте-Карло коэффициентов диффузного отражения и пропускания для двумерной матрицы коэффициентов поглощения и транспортного рассеивания. Этот метод представляет различные усовершенствования метода, впервые применённого в Департаменте Аланом Смитом (Alan Smith) и позднее Майклом Адамсом (Michael Adams).
Температурная чувствительность оптических коэффициентов оценивалась в диапазоне от 25 до 40 градусов Цельсия посредством помещения экспериментального аппарата и образцов в камеру термостатирования (инкубатор для новорожденных).
Результаты подходят для использования в более сложных моделях распространения света в сложных моделях ткани (например, моделях, построенных по методу конечных элементов и методу Монте-Карло) включая кожные структуры головы, живота, рук и ног.
English to Russian: Science/Applied Physics/ Solar power could switch on nano-sized robots.
Source text - English Sunlight could one day be harnessed to power nano-sized robots, thanks to nanocables that turn light into electricity. The cables are hollow, around 16 nanometres wide, and can grow several micrometres long. To build them, Fukushita and colleages created a compound containing hexabenzocoronene (HBC), two 12-carbon chains and trinitrofluorenone (TNF). They placed this in a solution of tetrahydrofuran and bubbled methan through it, creating a chemical reaction that made a compound assemble itself into hollow cables.
The HBC, which sheds electrons when hit by light, formed the inside of the cable wall, and the TNF, which readily accepts electrons, coated the outside.
Each time photons hit the cable, they knock loose an electron from the inner layer, causing it to jump to the outer layer and leave behind a positively charged hole. In this way the electrons are corralled into creating a current. To test this, the researches placed the nanocables on a silicon surface and applied a voltage across it. When they shone light onto the surface, a current began flowing down the cable, stopping when the light was switched off. The voltage was needed to kick-start the process because TNF is not a very effective conductor of electricity. This means the cables cannot yet produce usable electricity from sunlight alone . So the next step Fukushita says, is to modify TNF layer , for example, by attaching buck balls, so that it acts as a semiconductor, and allows current to flow. Once this has been achieved, the nanocables could be fitted to nano-sized robots and machines to power their movements.

Падение напряжения было необходимо чтобы запустить процесс поскольку ТNF не является очень хорошим проводником электричества.Это означает что кабели не могут пока вырабатывать полезное электричество только за счет солнечных лучей.Таким образом,следующим шагом ,по словам Фукушита,будет модификация внешнего слоя ТNF ,например посредством подсоединения бакиболлов,что позволит данному соединению действовать как полупроводник,проводящий электроток.По достижении этого нанокабели можно было бы монтироваиь внутрь нано-роботов .
