Source text - Bengali নদীমুখ বা বন্দর হতে জাহাজ রাত্রে সাধারণত ছাড়ে না, - বিশেষ করে কলকাতার ন্যায় বাণিজ্যবহুল বন্দর, আর গঙ্গার ন্যায় নদী থেকে। যতক্ষণ না জাহাজ সমুদ্রে পৌঁছায়, ততক্ষণ আড়কাটী সমানে দায়িত্বে থাকেন*; তিনিই ক্যাপ্টেন, তারই হুকুম; সমুদ্রে পৌঁছানো বা আসবার সময় নদীমুখ হতে বন্দরে ফেরার সময়েও তিনিই দায়িত্বে। গঙ্গার মুখে দুটি প্রধান আশঙ্কা: একটি জেমস ও মেরী নামক চোরাবালি বজবজের কাছে, দ্বিতীয়টি ডায়মন্ড হারবারের মুখে চড়া। পুরো জোয়ারে দিনের বেলায় চালক সন্তর্পণে জাহাজ চালান, না হলে নয়। কাজেই গঙ্গা থেকে বের হতে আমাদের দুদিন লাগলো।
*আড়কাটি – যিনি জল কত গভীর এবং অন্যান্য তথ্য জানেন এবং বন্দর নিকট হলে জাহাজ চালিয়ে নিয়ে যান, চালক।
Translation - English From the river mouth or from the port the ship usually does not leave at night, - especially from a business centered port like Kolkata, and a river like Ganga. Till the ship reaches the sea, it is Arkati’* who is in charge; He is the Captain, it is his order; only after escorting the ship to the sea or while coming back, from the mouth of the river to the port, is he released. At the mouth of Ganga there are two main fears: one is the quicksand near Bujboj called James and Mary, the second one is the sandy projecting mass at the mouth of Diamond Harbour. Pilot maneuvers the ship carefully at daytime during the high tide at its full, not otherwise. As a reason it took us two days to come out of Ganga.
Arkati* - He who knows the depth and all other information about water and takes charge of driving the ship near the port, Pilot.
