Polish term

dodawanie i odejmowanie bez przekraczania progu dziesiątkowego

Discussion

Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Aug 11, 2014:
Technically, we have "addition and subtraction with/without the change of the tens digit", where with = z przekraczaniem and without = bez przekraczania.
DLyons Aug 11, 2014:
@pawelpl Strictly speaking it's ""addition with carrying and subtraction with borrowing". carrying only applies to addition. borrowing only applies to subtraction (but when one borrows one has, of course to pay back, which is similar to carrying).
pawelpl (asker) Aug 11, 2014:
So "dodawanie i odejmowanie Z przekraczaniem progu dziesiątkowego" is "addition and subtraction WITH carrying and borrowing"? I mean, is the "WITH" necessary?
George BuLah (X) Aug 8, 2014:
we call it, e. g. ... "jeden w rozumie" ;))

DLyons Aug 8, 2014:
@MacroJanus In English, we tend to shorten things (for better or worse). This is a standard operation in teaching arithmetic, well understood by teachers, so I'd keep it simple myself.
"addition and subtraction WITHOUT carrying and borrowing" is a general term that would apply to not changing the tens digit as long as we do not go past 100. Past 100, the hundreds digit would come into play.
So, you can shorten to "addition and subtraction up to 100 without carrying and borrowing," since not changing the tens digit would be implied. Or, put in the whole term, similar to my answer.
pawelpl (asker) Aug 8, 2014:
@MacroJanus Is is true then that "addition and subtraction with carrying and borrowing" is the same as "addition and subtraction with changing the tens digit"? Can I use these two phrases interchangeably?
Subtraction worksheets with borrowing. This set of printable subtraction worksheets for kids includes lots of two digit subtraction problems with borrowing.

There is a newspeak these days: borrowing also goes by the name of regrouping.
Precisely, pawelpl: when you add, you carry; when you subtract, you borrow. In general, " without changing the tens digit."
Sorry, Robert. I came to the same conclusion. Once I entered my answer, I saw your erudite explanation.
BTW: when you add, you CARRY the tens digit
pawelpl (asker) Aug 8, 2014:
@Robert Foltyn Rozumiem. Mi chodzi o to, że nonsensem jest tłumaczenie, które mi osobiście wynikło: "Addition and subtraction to 100 up to 10".
Robert Foltyn Aug 8, 2014:
nie nonsens Chodzi o dadawanie np. 34 + 36, ale nie 34 + 37, bo 4 + 7 >10.
Podobnie z odejmowaniem: 37 - 33 --> tak. 37 - 18 --> nie, bo 7 - 8 <0

addition and subtraction up to 100 without carrying or borrowing the tens digit

My best interpretation. The numbers are large - up to one-hundred - but you do not have to "carry" the tens digit:

87 + 2 = 89,
or even 42 + 35 = 77

but NOT

87 + 5 = 92 (here you would have to "carry" 1 to add to 8 to make it 9)

Similarly for subtraction
57-32 = 25,
but NOT
82-43 = 39, where one needs to "borrow" 1 from 8 to make it 7, etc.
Note from asker:
So when you add, you carry. When you subtract, you borrow?

I just noticed that my original Polish answer was in the wrong language :-)
