The meaning and use of the term changes over time and with circumstance [...] Like a sponge in water, the term has swelled to soak up any number of woes.

How would you translate woes in this context. Is noie the correct best solution? I cannot find something that really fits in Italian.

Gaetano Silvestri Campagnano Aug 19, 2021: Parte precedente Concordo sia sul fatto che serve soprattutto conoscere la parte precedente e il termine al quale fa riferimento la frase, sia sull'ipotesi che il termine di domanda potrebbe essere "hues", visto che "woes" non sembra avere senso in questo contesto.

A quale termine si riferisce la frase quando dice che il suo significato varia a seconda dei tempi e delle circostanze? Quello potrebbe aiuterebbe a scegliere la corretta resa di "woes".
Danila Moro Aug 19, 2021: woes possono essere problemi, problematiche, difficoltà. Però non ci starebbe nella frase con la metafora della spugna. Secondo me la frase va modificata per tradurla, ma per farlo bisogna capire dove l'autore vuole andare a parare e dunque serve cio che segue.
AdamiAkaPataflo Aug 19, 2021: non sarà "hues"? Il termine ha assunto mille sfumature di significato diverse. "Woe" è pena, sofferenza, calamità & Co. e non mi pare voglia dire granché (anche se non conosco il termine cui si fa riferimento...)
