Spanish term

medias tintas

Spanish to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
I know that this is usually an idiomatic expression, but here it seems to refer to something specific about how the (contemporary Argentine ) artist's places the ink on the support:

I even let the diluted inks almost reach the color of the paper.

Lets not forget what he is trying to convey.
Obviously "mezzotint" is the technique used.

wash

Could this work?

A wash is a term for a visual arts technique resulting in a semi-transparent layer of colour. A wash of diluted ink or watercolor paint applied in combination with drawing is called pen and wash, wash drawing, or ink and wash.[2] Normally only one or two colours of wash are used; if more colours are used the result is likely to be classified as a full watercolor painting.
