If patient factors are held constant by careful patient selection, then the resulting family of curves would represent the relative thrombogenicity of each valve, with the more resistant valves toward the left. The optimum INR for the more resistant valve would be lower and the end result would be lower complications for patients with that valve.

Each new valve should then be studied under normal practice to establish its baseline behavior against standard criteria. Then as these studies indicate the valve should be examined at lower anticoagulation levels to find its optimum."
