m-クロロ 酸化スチレン

HI Minoru-san,

I’m reposting this to take out the confusing parts.

With reasonable certainty, I think this can be rendered as m-クロロ 酸化スチレン

The closest example that I could get is this:

酸化スチレン is a set translation for structure like this:
http://www.brenda.uni-koeln.de/index.php4?page=information/a...

“m” no doubt should go with chloro, not with oxide.

My previous notes:

“m” here stands for “meso”… this means the chloro group (Cl) is added to the 3rd position on a benzene ring, which is part of the styrene structure in this case. See a picture here:

http://www.hokkochem.co.jp/chemical/p_struc/067.gif

The I suspect the so-called “m-Chlorostyrene Oxide” is in fact an epoxide (that is, m-chlorostyrene epoxide). The structural formula of it can be seen here:

http://www.fcd.kaneka.co.jp/products/e_b.html

If you take the epoxide (what sticks out from the benzene ring other than Cl) as position no.1, then Cl is also located on the 3rd position – again, the meso position (hence, “m”).

Other terms in nomenclature for benzene substitution groups:
p = para (2nd or 5th position)
o = ortho (4th position – directly opposite position no. 1)

The structure of styrene here (substitution group in position 1):

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you for your explanation of he background. Meanwhile, after pondering over what translation should be applied, I decided to go with transliteration as some of similar chemical terms appearing in the document as I get evidence to that as well. Saved really, thank you."
