Definition / notes:Imagine healthy, lively crops of plants sprayed with natural products that replace pesticides and fungicides.

That is the vision of KHH BioSci Inc. of Raleigh, which was formed in 1998 by Hans von Amsberg, Ph.D., the company’s president, to develop and market a product called the Milsana bioprotectant.

Milsana bioprotectant is the trademark for an extract obtained from the giant knotweed plant. When topically applied to various ornamental, vegetable and fruit crops, the extracted and formulated product will induce increased amounts of naturally occurring phenolic substances within the plant, which prevent the attack of plant diseases such as powdery mildew and gray mold. “Milsana is like an Echinacea for plants; it renders them more resistant to certain diseases,” von Amsberg said.
