I think 'hard-nosed' may be a play on words here and have two meanings. The first may be a literal meaning of hard-nosed as 'tough'. The second relates to the boom nose itself (and possibly the nose roller assembly) being heavy duty - see http://loweman.com/trenchers

I think this is to be understood quite literally, even if any pun intended in English is lost, it wasn't a pun that merts translation.
