È una descrizione dinamica di cosa succede nel cuore con o senza pacemaker. Il movimento impresso dal pacemaker *mantiene* un gradiente di pressione longitudinale. Quando si disattiva il pacemaker, il cuore non riesce più a mantenere il flusso ordinato, il gradiente si modifica diventando, a tratti, trasversale e si instaurano vortici.

Anche "comportare", secondo me, va bene. L'unica differenza (trascurabile, in questo caso) è che dà alla frase un'enfasi diversa rispetto a "sopportare/sostenere/mantenere", cioè:
Mantenere/sopportare/sostenere: il movimento del ventricolo evita che il gradiente si annulli
Comportare: il movimento del ventricolo implica l'esistenza di un gradiente
Tutti e quattro i termini calzano.
