English term

To that end

English Social Sciences Management
Now that we have and understanding for how Lean works and how organizations can improve when using Lean, it’s time to learn about the ***'s Lean Strategy.

To that end, we have a very clear mission and values requiring continuous improvement.

It does not flow naturally if it means "for that purpose" or "therefore"...

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): humbird, Polangmar

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Sheila Wilson Nov 11, 2010:
You're translating into English? In that case, what you gave as the original term is perfectly OK. "For that purpose" is a synonym but not 100% interchangeable. If you don't like "to that end", you could use "to achieve that purpose"
Mark Chen (asker) Nov 11, 2010:
Sorry for the late reply. I was trying to translate this sentence. I think the first sentence and the second sentence do not flow naturally:
Now that we have and understanding for how Lean works and how organizations can improve when using Lean, it’s time to learn about the ***'s Lean Strategy. For that purpose, we have a very clear mission and values requiring continuous improvement...

Monica Colangelo Nov 6, 2010:
So? You need to be more specific when you post a question. Are you editing the English version? Are you translating and you are not sure what it means? To me it sounds perfect; what does not "flow naturally" is the first sentence.
writeaway Nov 6, 2010:
rewrite? if it's not broken why fix it? in any case, I'm still waiting to hear from asker about the point of this question. explanation of the meaning for translation purposes or is it being edited, in which case it's fine as stands.
Stephanie Ezrol Nov 6, 2010:
Here is one way to rewrite the sentence: Learning the Lean strategy is guided by clear values and a mission that requires continuous improvement.
meirs Nov 6, 2010:
end as purpose the end justifies (or not) the means (to achieve it)
writeaway Nov 6, 2010:
why doesn't it flow naturally if it means for that purpose? Are you planning to edit the English or translate it into Chinese?

for that purpose

This is the meaning, as you suggested.

No, I don't think it would read well - that's why they used "to that end" instead - but it actually means "for the purpose of learning about the above-mentioned subject"

With this in mind...

Many times, we should look for an 'equivalent expression' instead of the literal one. This may work for your particular context, Mark.
