@Asker IMO the author didn't use *gregarie* with the intent to belittle the role of women explorers, she is simply describing how they were regarded. What I really find sad but unfortunately true is the choice of adjectives, which could be describing a tool (sorry for the OT)

I DEFINITELY don't think that the author of this book, a Professor EmeritA, who is considered the world's leading expert on Christopher Columbus, and more generally, on the history of explorations and discoveries, would ever say anything disparaging about women. I didn't get that feeling about her, AT ALL, when I visited her in Rome.

ma l'associazione con gli aggettivi tutti positivi non mi fa pensare a un'accezione dispregiativa. La prima sensazione che ho avuto leggendo è stata il rimando al gregario nel ciclismo, sicuramente sia utile che silenzioso (aggettivi che invece non assocerei spontaneamente a un soldato semplice o a un elemento generico di un gruppo). Poi non so se dal contesto possa evincersi un altro tipo di concetto.

letteralmente un gregario è 1) un soldato semplice 2) una persona appartenente a un gruppo tipo "gregge" (che si aggrega, da solo non sta)

Mmm... non mi sento di condividere Lisa Jane, non avverto questo dispregiativo, anzi. Se l'autore avesse usato "assistenti" sarebbe stato riduttivo, mentre "gregarie" mi fa pensare a un ruolo comunque di primo piano, seppure senza ambizione di protagonismo. (p.s.: questi scambi sono sempre interessanti ;))

infatti Solo il termine gregarie è leggermente dispregiativo e l'autore ha scelto di usare in particolare questo termine (e non aiutante/assistente) proprio per dire che NON sono solo aiutanti di poco conto o con poco potere decisionale (che seguono gli esploratori). Il contrasto è tra il termine scelto e la negazione di essa. Quindi nella costruzione della frase è sottointeso che spesso le donne non avevano questo ruolo. Se si usa 'aiutante' secondo me si perde questa sfumatura.

Dove vedete la nota dispregiativa? Gli aggettivi "silenziose e utili" non sembrano denotare disprezzo, e neanche il termine "gregarie". Tanto più che poi il testo continua sottolineando che alcune donne hanno avuto posizioni di primo piano, agendo quindi non solo da gregarie ma da protagoniste.

if you want to maintain the slightly derogatory sense implied in the Italian 'gregaria' from gregge (herd), perhaps you could use this
