Polish term

podanie v. wniosek

Polish to English Law/Patents Law (general) Legal services
A list of services offered by a legal company to private individuals:

"sporządzamy wszelkie pisma potrzebne, aby rozpocząć i prowadzić postępowanie w sprawach administracyjnych, cywilnych, karnych oraz umożliwiających załatwienie sprawy w urzędach np. , zażalenia, , pozwy, odwołania"

If 'podania' become 'applications', what do 'wnioski' become in this context? As far as I know, 'petition' refers more or less specifically to divorce, in which case it would have little relevance to government offices. I also don't really see how 'proposal' would fit in here, given that the text is addressed to private individuals?

All suggestions most welcome! :-)

Caryl Swift (asker) May 20, 2007:
@ SzIwonka and legawa Thank you both very much for all the advice :-)
legato May 19, 2007:
I think "applications, petitions, claims" will do.
Caryl Swift (asker) May 19, 2007:
:-)))
Iwona Szymaniak May 19, 2007:
:D I couldn't agree more!

'Wnioseks' are the invention of the lord of the subterranean regions! :-)
Iwona Szymaniak May 19, 2007:
Yes, you're right as to the scope of their services. :)

and would always make mistakes though I am probably smart enough to fill them (at least I hope), and prefer to seek help. :) I guess I should stop here. ;-)
Iwona Szymaniak May 19, 2007:
Wniosek can often be a form with fields you only fill in while podanie is more like a letter. Some wnioseks are very complicated, e.g., farmers have to make wnioseks to get EU subsidies and they are complcated. I hate wnioseks of all kinds and
Caryl Swift (asker) May 19, 2007:
So I guess the thing here is to make it plain that the services include all types of formal, written requests. Thank you, SzIwonka - again! :-)
Iwona Szymaniak May 19, 2007:
Both are a sort of formal request filed with some sort of authorities.
There are some differences in their usage though, e.g., you can file a podanie for job but not a wniosek, etc.
Caryl Swift (asker) May 19, 2007:
Thank you! :-)
Iwona Szymaniak May 19, 2007:
for wniosek
prośba skierowana do odpowiednich władz dotycząca załatwienia jakiejś sprawy.
As matter of fact, the 1st definition focuses more on its wtirren form but actually it doesn't matter.
Caryl Swift (asker) May 19, 2007:
@ SzIwonka Yes - especially since this is simply a list of examples of services offered, rather than an official, legal document. Thank you :-)
Iwona Szymaniak May 19, 2007:
In this case, I'd rather use the closest synonim of the word "application" since podanie and wniosek have very similar meaning in this context:
Polish Language Dictionary:
for podanie
1. «pismo z prośbą skierowane do władz»

application v. motion

I agree with my forespeakers with reference to 'application'. Some official American websites refer to 'wnioski' as 'motions' in terms of divorce, criminal as well as administrative cases.
